I would think that the prevailing common sense would be to keep logfiles and update software now and then.

Nice in theory, but the floppy distros are passé when an inexpensive hard disk will do the job much better. A floppy can fail just by sitting in the drive. They're shit. Is it so hard to get a CD drive, or a cheap hard disk?

No, it isn't. I checked on installing a NNTP server at the university I work at. The find: for a full feed, it was a feed of over 40gig daily, spiking to 50-60 gig on the weekends. It was nearly two T1s worth of data 24/7, not to mention the disk space. Even with 200 gig of storage, that only gave a 3-5 day retention time. 3 days is pretty sparse. Such a feed almost requires two machines. One to process the incoming feed, and the other to handle clients. That further adds to the obscene cost. Most universities are not doing binaries anymore. We couldn't with out meager budget. Commercial sites are picking up the slack, and the trend seems to be for universities to purchase NNTP access in lieu of running their own.

On grammar.slashdot.org, we'd find things like 'spelling common words' 'capitalization' and certianly 'how 's does not make something plural.' Like pure ethanol, biodiesel costs more than normal diesel. I live 70 miles from a bigass ethanol plant and loading facility. Even with significant subsidies, the ethanol enriched gasoline is only 1 cent per gallon cheaper.
It's not at all a price issue...but many people think that ethanol is cheaper than oil, and BD is cheaper too. Neither are. But good call on the VW stuff. Jetta with diesel. Nice.
The problem is NLX stuff is rare, outdated, and expensive. It didn't catch on. I've a NEC machine with an NLX design sitting next to me. Nice in theory, and quite a clean design. But upgrades are not possible at all.
