Kind of like choosing a car that can reach 210mph over one that can only do 150mph when the national speed limit is only 70mph.
Yes, I know the figures don't show 100x but it just seems that it's pointlessly better than the currrent best clock which is already better than most people would ever need.
Do you really think that people don't try how really fast their new babies are? National speed limit is maybe 70mph, but if police doesn't catch you, you can drive as fast as you can.
Name one innocent person who has ACTUALLY been extradited by the US on BS chages for copyright violations.
Go ahead, I'll wait.
I'm not saying that its never going to happen, but it just hasn't happened yet, at least not in my life time.
You people just don't fucking get it.
We don't come get you and extradite you when we ACTUALLY want to get you. We just do that when we want to pretend you matter, but you really don't. See Julian Assange. When we actually want to get you, you just cease to exist one night. Its far cleaner and raises FAR fewer questions, even if a CIA agent comes out the next day and tells you he did it.
No they couldn't. Consumers don't care about accessing company files.
What about people in sales department? They are the worst kind of consumers. They need to show to salesmen in other companies how cool and modern they are. And (believe it or not) they need (sometimes) to access company files and to check mail every few minutes.
I had an nVidia problem with Kubuntu last week (or was it the week before?) My first serious problem in a couple of years.
Fortunately all my years of troubleshooting the issue on Debian and trying to make the directly from the website driver work when I first started on Kubuntu (and exercise in futility BTW) made it so I had it up and running again in no time anyways. It was an out-of order preparation for the new kernel.
Interesting. Problem with ATI is that they always push prerelease driver for new Ubuntu releases (because they follow 4 Month release cycle and usually the last driver is not ready for a new Ubuntu kernel). I really thought that NVIDIA drivers work out-of-box on both Debian stable and (K)Ubuntu.
I have a feeling the Unity backlash is going to do something to save Kubuntu, or at the least the Debian packages will work.
I'm quite sure Kubuntu will continue to exist as an independent Ubuntu flavor.
I switched to Debian after 11.04. It was simply too annoying every six months to repair a previously stable system. And if you use ATI with fglrx (like I do) it was a nightmare.
I did. I think that article was targeted to be inflammatory and manipulative. The linked story doesn't give me close to enough information to form an opinion on the merits of the project.
So here is what I think about the DARPA program.
If it is a robotics challenge like the self driving car I am fine with it. In fact I think it is a great idea.
If the projects are how to make a kill bot then I think it is a bad idea.
Without more information about the project I can not tell but odds are really good that it going to be a simple robotics challenge.
However the clear slant and manipulation of people with this are other slashdot articles is deeply disappointing and frankly disturbing.
What is more disturbing is the success they have with it. Notice how hostile you have gotten at me even questioning the bias of the story. You have even resulted to personal and emotional attacks and in your last post are demanding to know "Where I stand". I stand for truth and unbiased information. That is why I hate 90% of what I hear of fox news and frankly I am getting to that point with slashdot. I don't like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, or Michel Moore because they are all liars and manipulators that feel that they must inform us on how we should feel about the information as well as present it.
They are all negative influences on a free society.
So that is it I want the crap cut and the information given and not slanted!
Thank you, now I see your point.
I'm really sorry that I offended you.
Wow you are so self confused.
The world is not back and white, yet you clearly see it that way. Children are being used to create weapons directly or indirectly? Really?
and this.
"I am against war and against violence of any kind. For me is this story a red flag. It's your right to think otherwise..."
The fact you can not see the manipulation is really sad and yet again you throw up an emotional appel. I have never said I am for or not for this program. I never said that I as for war or violence or not. I simply pointed out facts it is you that is dealing with fear and emotion not I nd those are the tools of the tyrant and dictator.
"All true, but it doesn't make it less scary. Children will be used to design weapons."
So what you are saying is that that the post that I replied too was in fact completely invalid and while everything I stated was in fact the truth it just doesn't matter.
I want to say that not everything is black and white as you are learned to believe and how you want to look at this mater.
"Children will be used to design weapons."
No they will not. This is a DARPA program. The "kids" will not be tasked with designing weapons. They will not be given projects like "Build a robot that can shoot 10 people but not hit friendlies". Get real this will be a basic science project kind of program. They will be given project like, create a robot that can travel through sand, gravel, and mud.
How do you know that? And what "This is a DARPA program" means for you? The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is an agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technology for use by the military.
My point is that children will be used to create weapons. Directly or indirectly it doesn't mater.
You are the one living in fantasyland not I. You are so blinded you dismiss pure manipulation when you see it because you happen to believe in the goal.
What is wrong in believing in the goal?! In what should I believe? Please, help me to see the manipulation here.
Look at your own reply. You said that I was 100% correct and factual but that didn't matter and throw you some vague emotional attack at me.
I didn't say you are 100% correct and you can't be because you don't know all the facts related to this project (neither can any of us here). The whole story here (and that is a reason why we are posting this on slashdot) is that we have strong opinions about some subjects. I am against war and against violence of any kind. For me is this story a red flag. It's your right to think otherwise...
They are not conscripted into the armed forces so that is not valid.
They are not enlisted into the armed services so that isn't valid.
They are not participating actively in hostilities.
All true, but it doesn't make it less scary. Children will be used to design weapons.
A groundless inflammatory reply to a groundless inflammatory story. The new Slashdot marches on.
Oh, sorry, I didn't know you are from Disneyland. Well, in the real world people die from real weapons. Sorry if mentioning that on slashdot hurt your feelings.
I would say that every use of children for military purposes of any kind is a violation of international human rights: Military_use_of_children#International_human_rights_law
and especially interseting part is:
"Under Article 8(2)(a)(xxvi) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), adopted in July 1998 and entered into force 1 July 2002; "Conscripting or enlisting children under the age of fifteen years into the national armed forces or using them to participate actively in hostilities" is a war crime."
Yes, you are right, but in mentioned countries nobody cares about ACTA because copyright policing will anyway be ignored. Government doesn't give a shit if somebody pirates movies or music. ACTA is just a piece of paper and Hollywood Studios can wipe their a** with that paper.
You must have some important (and independent) site which can black-out Internet. ACTA will hit hard on ISP's, it must be a chance that they can put a pop-up Web Page once per day or every few hours explaining to Internet users whats going on? Or they are just in the hands of politicians who signed the ACTA?
good point, but that's exactly my concern above... there are 22 countries that have already signed. basically it's impossible to get people from 22 countries informed via one or two important sites. what we are using here everyday are basically the same big-name sites that US/Australia & others are using (Wikipedia, YouTube, Google) but asides from that, everyone is on his own: For instance in Romania, (probably) the only high-impact news site is hotnews(.)ro. But can't guarantee for it's independence.... And even if we would manage to get hotnews to make a blackout/popup warning about ACTA, this would only get us 1 vote down.
1 vote down is a message like what Kader Arif did (of course we both agree that this whole discussion is academic in nature)
Without a huge move like the one made by Reddit/ Wikipedia/ Google & Co/ etc we'll never be able to stop it.
You must have some important (and independent) site which can black-out Internet. Actually most of those who died were responsible for stalling the process of adoption of software patents in the EU. They had a different approach to freedom than the current government, which treats it as a commodity for sale
So let us create another conspiracy theory:
Their airplane is deliberately sabotaged so that people who will sign ACTA come to power.
If using an animation and sketch app and watching videos constitutes "computer literacy", then pretty much everyone is computer literate.
I'm not quite sure... You need to know much more then just how to browse. For me is a "computer literacy" more then just using a computer. It's also knowing not to open emails from some Nigerian prince who offer you to be rich and not gabbling around personal data.
I'm pretty sure the article author would disagree, but then, I disagree with him and more agree with you.
If she knows the basics of generic program manipulation, she's literate. As in real literacy, it doesn't mean you enjoy Goethe, it means you can read. To carry that a step further, programming is reading Goethe in the original German.
It's exactly that part that I can't seem to do. They all sound the same to me.
Ok, I revoke what I said before, but only in your case:-)
You obviously don't have an ear.
Rhythm is something you're born with. You cannot learn it. I'm sure your friend had at least a notion for rhythm. I'm also pretty sure your friend played horribly, but from what I've seen chicks get their panties wet from a guitar playing dude especially if he's at least halfway good looking. The music played is non-essential. Not sure why this is... His goal was not the music, his goal was getting in their panties.
Are you sure? Do you like music? If you like classical music, jazz or blues it's very probable that you have the talent and that your teachers were too occupied pulling their hear instead of awaking the interest in you.
Yes, and yes... I like listening to music, but there is a difference between listening to music and making any, being able to keep rhythm, being able read notes (I still do no understand how such a braindead notation could even exist, but some people must be able to read it). I am completely atonal. I'll give you another example: I like art, my wife is an artist, she can and does paint. Could I? At the same level she does? Just by training? Very very unlikely even with years of training... However, I do like art, in exactly the same way I like music. As a consumer.
No, I don't mean being able to create music, but being able to reproduce it. You can reproduce it mechanically (just remember the order of pressing, pulling, hitting,... and duration) or with understanding (feeling what should be done next without thinking too much). Both techniques requires that somebody explains you how it should be done.
Afterwards it's only motivation and hard work.
I had a friend who was a complete anti-talent for music, he couldn't feel the music, but he learned to perform several popular songs on a guitar, because he wanted to impress some chicks. Oh, yes, he did succeeded. As I mentioned before: all is in motivation and hard-work.
I just expect them not to be bureaucrats and think a little bit (basically they should be doing the same thing that Socrates did on streets of Athens).
In the teaching-classes I took, they were extolling the virtues of involvement-based teaching, etc... Yet, applying none of the concepts themselves. On top of that, I know of aspriant-teachers that did exactly what was being taught in their teaching-classes, only to be told "the next one you'd better do a full-frontal, because that's what we want to see". The "teaching formation", I got was basically one big bureaucracy up to the wazoo full of hypocrites. I love explaining interesting stuff from field, but I dislike hypocrisy, dishonesty and the level of bureaucracy involved. I could not imagine a life full of that, which is another reason why I quit. I pretty much have a whole list, and yet, I still regret not being one because I did like the teaching part.
Yes, I can fully understand how you feel there. That is a reason why I'm so pissed-off on the "education system".
The process of teaching must start in kindergarten, have it's full power during elementary school and specialize and guide abstract thinking afterwards. To start in puberty to bring them basics is off course too late.
I think we agree on the basics on how teaching should be done. However, I still am convinced that even basic computer literacy has no place as a separate subject in any school. Well, then teach graphs and trees in Math and use it to explain directory structures. That would make sense. Graphic encoding as an application of a function. That's just examples, there is surely more you can come up with.
I agree. Basic computer literacy must be teached in all classes, so that every teacher explains a part related to their field (mathematics teacher can explain algorithms, language teacher can explain grammatical errors using wikipedia articles, for psychology and sociology there is no better example then Facebook (P.S. for other posters, please do not say: porn sites for sexual education)). But us we all know, that will never happen.
Mine doesn't use facebook, she is 14. One of the pretenses of her having her own computer is we have access and randomly check, we have never done so as there is no need. She uses her computer to watch videos, and to draw in photoshop. She is currently working with some of her friends on their first animated short story.
For me that means that she is computer literate. (and btw congratulations to you as a parent)
Why would anyone want to use Linux as their everyday desktop (or laptop) operating system?
Why not? It simply works, I can do whatever I want.
It all seems like an unnecessary gain.
Kind of like choosing a car that can reach 210mph over one that can only do 150mph when the national speed limit is only 70mph.
Yes, I know the figures don't show 100x but it just seems that it's pointlessly better than the currrent best clock which is already better than most people would ever need.

Is it worth it for Microsoft to alternate between a solid OS and a crappy one?
Win98(good) -> WinME(crap) ->WinXP(good) -> Vista(crap)
They don't need to alternate, they can always go with:
Win8(crap)->Win9(crap)->Win10(crap)->...
Name one innocent person who has ACTUALLY been extradited by the US on BS chages for copyright violations.

iPads with keyboards would work great for 99% of them.
So actually any notebook, notepad, subnotebook,... would also work great for them...
Actually, 99% of them need only a paper notebook and a telephone.
consumers could care less
No they couldn't. Consumers don't care about accessing company files.
What about people in sales department? They are the worst kind of consumers. They need to show to salesmen in other companies how cool and modern they are. And (believe it or not) they need (sometimes) to access company files and to check mail every few minutes.
why would you waste your time contributing to Kubuntu (which obviously Mark S. doesn't care for)
For some people is that reason enough :-)
I had an nVidia problem with Kubuntu last week (or was it the week before?) My first serious problem in a couple of years.
Fortunately all my years of troubleshooting the issue on Debian and trying to make the directly from the website driver work when I first started on Kubuntu (and exercise in futility BTW) made it so I had it up and running again in no time anyways.
