To deal with the cold, hard logic of computers all day, you need to be comfortable with such an unemotional, machine-like environment. As an IT worker, I can tell you firsthand that many women aren't comfortable in situations like that. Far too many ex-girlfriends of mine have told me I'm "too much like a robot." To which I reply, "a sex robot?" And they say no.:-(

Both Card and the Taliban want to use militancy and the state to force their religious practices on everyone. How is that hyperbole?

As you can tell from the UID, I've been using that name for a long time. I picked that name when signing up for slashdot in the nineties. I was reading Ender's Game at the time.
A decade later, I would like to change the name, but I don't want to lose the karma and the low UID:-(
But as a onetime fan of Card's work, I am saddened to learn that he shares much in common with groups like the Taliban.

Card lost his mind. He's a fanatical religious hate-monger. He proposed violently overthrowing the government if gays are given the right to marry. I'm never buying anything he writes again.
As an intern, the experience you get matters WAY more than the pay you might receive. Ignore compensation, go for the interesting jobs or the well-respected companies regardless of pay.
Well, we don't all have delusions of being Bill Gates anymore, but a CompSci degree is still the 4-year degree with the highest post-graduation salaries.
I was in high school in the late nineties. At that time, being talented with computers was actually *cool* because it meant you would make big big bucks after graduation.
If I hear people snickering behind me, my first instinct IS to assume they are laughing at me. My rational mind then takes over and reminds me this is unlikely; but, still, I assumed this response is either normal for humans or trained as a result of our "kick me" sticky-note pranks as kids. I never realized it meant I was nuts.
why have a Korean play a Japanese character (Sulu)? WTF?
They are acting. It doesn't matter what country they are from, just what they look like. Because Asians share similar genetic heritage, they look similar regardless of their country or culture.

The problem is NOT that people ask for or give out SSNs. The problem is that banks and businesses stupidly use knowledge of SSNs as a means of authentication. Obsessing over the "privacy" of such non-private data is trying to fix the wrong problem.
Computer Science needs to go. 95% of the students majoring in Computer Science should actually be majoring in Software Engineering.
It's a sad mistake of history than CompSci is the major most widely available in a world that needs software engineers, not more academics arguing about p=np.
There is nothing wrong with Computer Science, it's just being applied incorrectly in the education system today.
The sort of person still running a 32 bit OS is not from the same set as those who might spend $3k on the latest and greatest hardware. You don't matter to them.
Interesting. Yes, unless Italy changes the law, it is in effect outlawing EVERY web site that allows user submissions, including slashdot.
The lack of corporate protection also gives pause. If I were running a web business which allowed user submission, Italy would be near the bottom of my list of countries to allow access from. They won't get my business unless they fix their law.
You don't want a warrant for your arrest in any country. Even if it is something stupid which you can't be extradited for. It means you can never visit and you can never get a flight which goes through their airport or even anywhere near the country (for fear of being diverted to the country for some reason).
The business could not operate without computers. You make the computers work, therefore, 100% of revenue is dependent on you. Your ROI is $revenue/$your_cost * 100 percent. None are more valuable. Ask for either more money or exemption from these stupid and unproductive exercises.

Perhaps ambiguous as to violence, but he clearly wants to overthrow the government rather than see gays have equal rights.

Science is belief based on evidence (and other things). It's empirical. Faith is belief without evidence or despite contradictory evidence.
Empirical belief systems like science are polar opposites to faith. That is not prejudice. That is the definition of the terms.
