  1. Re:Poor Write-Up (Sensationalism) on Looking For Intelligence · · Score: 2, Informative

The only reason most of the planets found (over 100 now) so far are very close to their stars is because of our observational bias. It's much easier to detect a massive planet that it close to the star since these cause the biggest "wobbles" from the star.

As planet hunting is in its relatively early days at the moment we are finding all the ones that are easiest to find, and looking at current stats they are now detecting planets out to 2 or 3 AU.

Also, because this has only been going on a few years we haven't been able to see the "wobbles" for planets that have orbital periods of more than a couple of years.

Basically, within the next few years we should start to find more stars with planets further out.

Exxon Mobil(largest company in the world, revenues of over $210 billion last year) has not bought BP(7th largest company in the world, revenues of almost $150 billion last year.

Perhaps you were thinking of BP's takeover of Amoco a few years ago (ok then, merger *cough*).

Besides the obvious witch hunt jokes, it should be noted that, as we haven't seen these sites yet, they could contain stuff that actually is obscene.
For example, he could be mocking specific police officers and their families for all we know. The artical mentions there was porn on some of the pages, that used info off their site.
Even though it was a parody, what sort of copyright issues are there in this case.
It's stated he had "how-to books on computer hacking". Can you get one of those for the linux kernel?:)

  7. Old tech. on Laser-equipped 747 · · Score: 1

A few years ago there was a documentary about the SDI ("Star Wars"), and there was footage of a test from the 80s.
IIRC a DC-10 was used to store the laser and computers for the targeting (big ass computers back then, therefore big plane, I believe a plane smaller than a 747 could be used nowadays(ie, a smaller target)).
Anyway, a F-4 Phantom then fired a heat seeking missile at the plane (the warhead had been removed, but the missile could still have brought down the plane). There was some great footage of the missile being sliced in two by the laser.
They must have been pretty confident that it would work as if it hadn't there was a chance the plane would have been destroyed.
Now of course, over 10 years later the US can't get missiles to hit other missiles, when back then they had a working laser.
