Actually, I'm hoping that was a cover story. Maybe it'll turn out that the AIs are timesharing human brains (it' d be cheaper than building a bunch of computers). So, if Neo and crew successfully destroy the Matrix they'll destroy most or all of the AIs.

And maybe they'll have some AIs on the human's side. Or maybe a group of AIs who shun using timeshared human wetware are also seeking to destroy the Matrix.

A long, low workbench with an integrated powerstrip that's deep enough to hold a 21" monitor, keyboard and still have plenty of room to rest arms, wrists and books in front of the monitor.

Opposite of the workbench: book shelves, filing cabinets, misc. storage space, a couch. All of this should be low too. You should be able to access everything without having to stand up.

The hardest part of my job is trying to explain to management what I do. They all know it has something to do with computers, I'm usually the first person they call when problems occur. But the more arcane bits of my job are inexplicable to most of them. It's like magic. Even my direct supervisor is a little hazy about how I spend most of my day (no slashdot jokes please).

And from talking with friends and others, it's the same if not worse elsewhere.

So how can management quantify your value if they don't understand your function? Whose responsiblity is it to understand your function? How can we educate management about our functions?

How could they make the "Voice" more convincing?

As far as I could tell from the books, the "Voice" is just control over intonation and phrasing that allows someone to cut through the conscious filtering most people use when listening to another person.

With out the cheesy effect from the movie you wouldn't know when they were using the "Voice".

  6. Introversion vs. Shyness on LonelyNet · · Score: 1

You seem to have shyness confused with introversion.

Being an INTP I know what I am talking about. Being introverted basically means you have a preference for internal rather than external stimulus. Being shy means you feel uncomfortable around people you don't know well. You can usually overcome shyness, but you will almost always stay an introvert.

  7. Is it really socializing? on LonelyNet · · Score: 1

Can you really call any indirect form of communication socializing?

I don't care how many chat rooms you hang out in or how many people you've meet via ICQ. If the person can't reach out and touch/hug/grab/punch the other participant during the conversation, it's indirect. And being indirect you can't be picking all the cues a person gives off that really define social interaction. So how can you call it socializing?

It's very disturbing that people can substitute an internet chat room for human contact. This is why a great many people feel that this technology is dehumanizing. People fall out of practice being people when they never see another person.

The problem with the Iceland episode, wasn't the fact that the entire population was being used for genetic research, it was the fact the RESULTS of the research were going to be licensed to a single company.

While I am sure that to someone this seemed to be good idea (probably a stockholder), apparently a large enough fraction of Icelanders disagreed.

These are the kinds of things that need to be debated. Why is this being done? Who benefits? How will future generations be affected by the information uncovered? Who gets to decide if good points outweigh the bad? How do you prevent the information from being missused?

We are starting to see more and more of these types of issues coming up. The FBI wants to have genetic material from every person arrested in america!! My HMO knows more about me that my parents, but they won't let me check it!! At somepoint in the not do distant future everything you do will be in someone's database!!

Where is the forum for dealing with these issues? How do you compete with multinational companies with their massive media machines? Sure I can call my representatives at all levels (local, state and federal), but a vast majority have no interest (or understanding) in the issues we are talking about. How do I explain to my Mom that the stuff she sees on TV and reads in the magazines and newspapers isn't the whole story.

As always, he who has the power (money) makes the rules. That's where Katz needs to focus, find out who is paying who for our future!!

You can spend you whole life (if you can find one) debating the merits of various operating systems and hardware platforms, but when it comes time to do the job, you have to pick the best tool for task at hand. If you try to be religious about your tools, you are going to fail.

I love my Mac, it is easy to use and take care of.

Until something better comes along, I will continue to use Macs as my primary desktop machine.

Unfortunately, Macs (for now at least) suck as servers. That's were Linux (or some other *nix) comes in. Bulletproof servers and easy to use desktops makes for happy people.
