All of these teach skills which are usefull for the technologist or chief mentor or Standards body member kind of positions in Industry. Total travel time is the issue. If you take a train you are at the trains maximum speed for most of the time and you go from city centre to city centre so even if planes have a faster maximum speed for short distances and taking into account the take off and landing speeds train travel can actually be faster. It is much more difficult to go fast on the ground due to issues like safety (a cow walking across the track) and friction and earthquakes. So getting a train to go that fast is more of an engineering marvel than getting a plane to go fast. As far as driving goes that is probably the worst form of commuting. Driving is fine for long drives in the countryside and for communing with nature but if I am spending 2 hours a day commuting I want to be able to use that time to do some work on my laptop or at least sleep but if you drive you have to spend that time driving. I wish American cities would develop a culture of trains.
Japan doesnt really need any more faster trains. At the rate their population is falling soon even Tokyo will have vacancies at reasonable rents so the need for going further and further out is not really urgent. But India and China with their huge populations and limited land (if you dont count deserts China is actually smaller than India) do need them and in 20 years time when they can afford maglevs on a large scale who are they going to buy from? By leaving college at 5 and getting at least an hour of sleep on the buses by the time I was home at 7:30 I was refreshed enough to work on my assignments till 12 at night. Of course after a while it made more sense to stay in the hostel on campus but campus life in Indian Engineering colleges is as brutal as in Russian conscript barracks. (Kidding but a lot of shit does happen in Engineering college hostels and they are not really very conducive to studying)

Its really a bad idea to try and get wired connections into every Indian home given the dual problems of over congested cities and far and spread out small villages. Its precisely why it was so tough to get phones in India till wireless came in. On the other hand if the govt just concentrates on providing free wifi and let it be implemented on city level say by allowing cities to hold on to some octroi to pay for it, it would work much better. For the rural areas free wifi could be provided by colocating wifi stations with Panchayats. Given the low amount of usage in rural india no Panchayat would be overloaded even if the entire village was using OLPCs to log in to the same wifi node.

Now the Dollar is 40 Rupees so the price could go upto 125 dollars and still stay under 5000 rupees. Now 5000 rupees is a very crtical psychological barrier in India and any laptop able to stay below 5000 is going to have a good chance. BTW desktops are available for 10000 rupees right now in India.

Actually the TRIPS is somewhere between OOO and VLIW (Itanium) The explicit data flow information embedded in the instructionenables much larger instruction windows than possible in traditional OOO. As instructions are not just loaded into the window in a dumb manner it reduces the chances and costs of pipeline flushes
I took Prof Burger's course and we studied the TRIPS processor. There are two parts to the project. One is the Chip team and the other is the software team led by Dr Katherine McKinley . The software team has developed emulators so that current code can run on the TRIPS processor. Of course emulation is never as good as native execution but it does provide an upgrade path. The key thing to notice is that the upgrade path has been part of the thinking from the beginning.
I am only going to address the argument which pro gun people make that given gun control law abiding citizens would not have guns but the criminals would still get them. I counter this by noting the fact that most high end criminals who have some brains dont go around shooting people. They may use guns as threats but they avoid killing people as the professional criminals know theres a world of difference between being sent away for robbery or for murder. These are the guys with the wits to get guns even under a gun control regime but they wont go around shooting people. On the other hand are the strung out junkies and teenage boppers trying to hold up stores and the psycho students. These are people who dont understand the consequences and if they have guns they will use them. However they are too stupid to actually procure black market guns so if we had gun control we would have a far lower rate of gunshot deaths as it is the stupid criminals who do the most damage.
The professor Giovanni who victimized Cho should be arrested and charged with at least manslaughter. She is a professional victim who built her career on claiming discrimination and when she is finally in a position of power she victimizes this young man till he goes crazy. I mean this is not a Engineering or Management student. This is an English major - a person with a sensitive psyche who wants to be a writer or a poet. You take such a person who has struggled against the Asian family pressure of going into Engineering to choose an English major and you ostracize him by excluding him from your class. When he tries to get a date with a girl richer than him you make him an object of ridicule by calling the cops on him and sending him for Psych eval- why? Because hes crazy enough to try and get a date with someone above his social class. This kind of mental torture goes on everyday in campuses all araound the US. Unfortunately only innocent victims end up paying the price and the people who carry out the bullying never get punished. I could not believe Virginia Tech actually let Giovanni speak at the memorial. Just goes to show while talented people are busy doing work the leeches grab all the attention.
Third wold citizens feel most comfortable coming to US as it is the first world country most similar to the third world. Europe with its welfare, govt sponsored programmes and adequate funding for students feels strange to third worlders. The US with its ruthless capitalism where if you cant pay you die is familiar from childhood.
