What if we recalculate the age of the Sun based on these new figures and it shows the Sun got created 5000 years ago . Then it would mean the Christians were right all along and all the fossil evidence was just props put in by God to puzzle the puny humans. See it IS a crisis;)
A PhD is as much about doing research in a lab as about playing politics to get your wagon hitched to a Professor on the rise, play politics to get the foreign student in the group do the shitty jobs (after all he cant work off campus), writing up nicely written funding proposals, budget that money, lobby for funding, network for postdoc positions. All of these teach skills which are usefull for the technologist or chief mentor or Standards body member kind of positions in Industry. Sure you as a BSE or a MSE may be better at the day to day technical job but the PhD is always going to be trusted with the higher positions because executives understand that PhDs already know how to play the politics and networking game and also they had the stick to itiveness to survive 6 years of crap.
That is why wristwatches and PDAs have alarms. Since bullet trains run pretty much to timetable you can get on set your alarm for 5 minutes before your station and go to sleep.
That phrase actually means It went too far. I guess what happened was that Gere was entertaining a bunch of truck drivers. Now truck drivers in India fairly or unfairly have a reputation somewhat like what frat boys have in the US so Gere tried acting like a frat boy. He kinda forgot that Aishwarya is a former Miss World and Indians kind of love international titles (comes from the colonial hangover where the white mans approval meant the world) and are protective of Aishwarya. I am sure if it was some of the other Slutty actresses ( in public image I have no idea how they are in person) like say Bipasha no one would have cared
Far from me to be pedantic but India is actually a smaller country than US. And the govt already runs two companies which provide internet service in India. Probably the govt just plans to make service from those companies free. The rest of the market will follow to stay competitive. So how will they make money? The other point being made in the article is about boosting web hosting by the same companies. So the govt wants companies to make their money from hosting and give access for free somewhat like free to air television where the broadcasters get paid by the programme producers and the programme producers in turn make their money from advertisement. I dont know if it will work but it could.
Oh you mean the ex junkie who heard there is a boom in IT and learnt to say the words JAVA, CISCO , WEB instead of Change Please , Change. Well hes back where he started but at least he had a few good years during the boom where every Tom Dick and Harry got an IT job.
You do know that in most parts of India water sewer and electricity are free. The government needs to provide these free in order to win elections. One more point in favour of communist dictatorships vis a vis democracies.
And cable is mostly stolen so the only thing people do pay for is cell phones and internet. Its because these are privatized and if you dont pay your bill AT&T will send someone from their local branch to break your legs
I object to number 0. Its not that India's poor kids dont go to school. They are just 'Home Schooled'. BTW probably an equal proportion of the population in the US and India are functionally illiterate given the relative importance of football vis a vis reading in American school.
Total travel time is the issue. If you take a train you are at the trains maximum speed for most of the time and you go from city centre to city centre so even if planes have a faster maximum speed for short distances and taking into account the take off and landing speeds train travel can actually be faster. It is much more difficult to go fast on the ground due to issues like safety (a cow walking across the track) and friction and earthquakes. So getting a train to go that fast is more of an engineering marvel than getting a plane to go fast. As far as driving goes that is probably the worst form of commuting. Driving is fine for long drives in the countryside and for communing with nature but if I am spending 2 hours a day commuting I want to be able to use that time to do some work on my laptop or at least sleep but if you drive you have to spend that time driving. I wish American cities would develop a culture of trains.
Japan doesnt really need any more faster trains. At the rate their population is falling soon even Tokyo will have vacancies at reasonable rents so the need for going further and further out is not really urgent. But India and China with their huge populations and limited land (if you dont count deserts China is actually smaller than India) do need them and in 20 years time when they can afford maglevs on a large scale who are they going to buy from? From those who have working systems in place so this is more of a demo for sales purposes and hence the costs are justified. Pretty much for the same reasons the French and Germans are building fast trains- so they can sell to the Indians and Chinese.
Actually that would be 70 times 2 as the commute is both ways. 2.5 hours extra time is nothing to be sneezed at. Of course train commute time is not really wasted time. Its not as if you have to keep your eye on the road. You can use it to sleep. When I was going to college in Delhi I had a 2.5 hour bus commute each way. it was either that or driving 1.5 hours on a bike while breathing smoke all the way. At least on the bus I could catch up on my sleep even if I had to change 4 buses to get home. By leaving college at 5 and getting at least an hour of sleep on the buses by the time I was home at 7:30 I was refreshed enough to work on my assignments till 12 at night. Of course after a while it made more sense to stay in the hostel on campus but campus life in Indian Engineering colleges is as brutal as in Russian conscript barracks. (Kidding but a lot of shit does happen in Engineering college hostels and they are not really very conducive to studying)
The reason the Japanese can concentrate on development without worrying about security is that they dont go into other countries and piss off a bunch of other people. Do you really think if the US military was not deployed in 150 countries all around the world Americans would still have to worry about terrorism? I dont think so. So a bunch of Muslims want to kill a bunch of Jews. What do we care. If America would just get out of the middle east and stop supporting Israel with money and arms I am sure the Mullahs would be too busy blowing up Israelis to care about blowing anything American up. Terrorism is just the cost you pay for having imperialist foreign policies. The Japanese learnt the hard way that an Imperialist foreign policy is not good. Unfortunately or fortunately America has not lost a war fought on its own soil in almost 2 centuries (the last war America lost was when the Canadians whooped Americas ass in 1812) so for Americans war is just a game and they keep supporting imperialist policies. Given the overwhelming strength of the US army terrorism is pretty much the only way the other side can fight back. It is kind of like how the founding fathers had to use terrorism to gain independence as there was no way they could stand up to the might of the British army.
And if anyone thinks Social Security is any different than children paying for parents let me remind you Social Security is not based on money you pay into it rather it is based on money paid by the current generation used to pay out to people of a previous generation. Its basically forcing all the children to pay into a common fund and then paying out from that fund to all the parents and a few freeloaders who didnt have children. Why this is especially bad is that even the girl who got raped by her asshole father ends up paying social security and that money goes to the asshole who raped her. So basically no consequences for bad parenting or being selfish and not having kids.
Regarding Child Abuse I believe a lot of the problem lies in the fact that in the US the state has intruded too much into the family beginning with social security. In traditional society when you got old your children took care of you. So even the most venal, self centered person had a vested interest in taking care of their children and trying to make them successfull. So people simply didnt abuse their kids as they knew when the kids grow up they will decide whether you have a comfortable old age or end up as a beggar on the temple steps. With the coming of social security parents really have no vested interest in the success of their children. Sure the good parents still take care of their kids but these parents are not going to depend on social security or welfare in any case. And as a side effect as the bad parents only look upon their children as burdens with no payoff they abuse and then the state has to introduce all kinds of intrusive laws. I say let the family play its role. The family as an institiution has lasted 10s of thousands of years because it plays a very important role and it does it much more efficiently than any combination of Child Services, Welfare and Social Security ever could.
Seriously your family has been in US for two generations and you still have family in villages? I find that hard to believe. The general Indian model is if someone makes it good (and living in US is considered making it good unless your dad was an illegal and drives a taxi), they help the rest of the family out and within a generation everyone is in the metros if not in US itself. So I say bullshit. You are making this up.
Its really a bad idea to try and get wired connections into every Indian home given the dual problems of over congested cities and far and spread out small villages. Its precisely why it was so tough to get phones in India till wireless came in. On the other hand if the govt just concentrates on providing free wifi and let it be implemented on city level say by allowing cities to hold on to some octroi to pay for it, it would work much better. For the rural areas free wifi could be provided by colocating wifi stations with Panchayats. Given the low amount of usage in rural india no Panchayat would be overloaded even if the entire village was using OLPCs to log in to the same wifi node.
Sometimes people are not really comfortable with some activities given their upbringing. People and societies change at their own pace and it is never a good idea to force ones standards on others. I am an Indian living in US so I follow US norms and I would expect an American visiting India to follow Indian norms. Just for arguments sake if someone from West Africa comes to US and has many wives (its common in West Africa) and all the wives and the husband have no problem with the concept why does American society get its panties in a bunch. Or for that matter in most of the world where people have not been overanalyzed by psycho therapists people discipline their children using corporeal punishment but in the US if a parent hits their kid in public they would have the Child Services on their head and the crazy courts would side with the crazy Child Activists (dont even get me started on the Animal Rights crazies ). So you see their are crazies in each society. But dont worry with globalization societies are converging. India will hopefully loose some of its shyness about public affection , the Arabs will stop wearing Burkhas, Texas will make it obligatory for every obstetrician to offer abortion as an option whenever a couple comes for its first pre natal visit (this is prety much true in Europe When you go for a visit and find out you are pregnant the doctor simply asks good news or bad news),New York will allow us to play ice hockey with baby seal carcasses on Hudson and California will outlaw Child Support if the father wanted an abortion and the mother refused.
India is one of the big targets for the OLPC and when it was proposed the USD was 49.something Rupees so almost 5000 rupees. Now the Dollar is 40 Rupees so the price could go upto 125 dollars and still stay under 5000 rupees. Now 5000 rupees is a very crtical psychological barrier in India and any laptop able to stay below 5000 is going to have a good chance. BTW desktops are available for 10000 rupees right now in India.
Its been in development for a while. Papers were published 3 years back but the actual working prototype just came out last year and after testing and debugging it was released to public in a function this month. Just like AMD has been talking about Greyhound for 3 years but it wont release till June this year
Actually the TRIPS is somewhere between OOO and VLIW (Itanium) The explicit data flow information embedded in the instructionenables much larger instruction windows than possible in traditional OOO. As instructions are not just loaded into the window in a dumb manner it reduces the chances and costs of pipeline flushes
I took Prof Burger's course and we studied the TRIPS processor. There are two parts to the project. One is the Chip team and the other is the software team led by Dr Katherine McKinley . The software team has developed emulators so that current code can run on the TRIPS processor. Of course emulation is never as good as native execution but it does provide an upgrade path. The key thing to notice is that the upgrade path has been part of the thinking from the beginning.
I am only going to address the argument which pro gun people make that given gun control law abiding citizens would not have guns but the criminals would still get them. I counter this by noting the fact that most high end criminals who have some brains dont go around shooting people. They may use guns as threats but they avoid killing people as the professional criminals know theres a world of difference between being sent away for robbery or for murder. These are the guys with the wits to get guns even under a gun control regime but they wont go around shooting people. On the other hand are the strung out junkies and teenage boppers trying to hold up stores and the psycho students. These are people who dont understand the consequences and if they have guns they will use them. However they are too stupid to actually procure black market guns so if we had gun control we would have a far lower rate of gunshot deaths as it is the stupid criminals who do the most damage.
The professor Giovanni who victimized Cho should be arrested and charged with at least manslaughter. She is a professional victim who built her career on claiming discrimination and when she is finally in a position of power she victimizes this young man till he goes crazy. I mean this is not a Engineering or Management student. This is an English major - a person with a sensitive psyche who wants to be a writer or a poet. You take such a person who has struggled against the Asian family pressure of going into Engineering to choose an English major and you ostracize him by excluding him from your class. When he tries to get a date with a girl richer than him you make him an object of ridicule by calling the cops on him and sending him for Psych eval- why? Because hes crazy enough to try and get a date with someone above his social class. This kind of mental torture goes on everyday in campuses all araound the US. Unfortunately only innocent victims end up paying the price and the people who carry out the bullying never get punished. I could not believe Virginia Tech actually let Giovanni speak at the memorial. Just goes to show while talented people are busy doing work the leeches grab all the attention.
Third wold citizens feel most comfortable coming to US as it is the first world country most similar to the third world. Europe with its welfare, govt sponsored programmes and adequate funding for students feels strange to third worlders. The US with its ruthless capitalism where if you cant pay you die is familiar from childhood.
What if we recalculate the age of the Sun based on these new figures and it shows the Sun got created 5000 years ago . Then it would mean the Christians were right all along and all the fossil evidence was just props put in by God to puzzle the puny humans. See it IS a crisis ;)
