I recently started using Task Coach http://www.taskcoach.org/ which is a GPL app. It has been good for me so far particularly in handling detailed tasks. I don't know how it would hold up to a project though.
The features I use most are categories/sub categories and there is a timer that you can start/stop for a specific task. It also allows you to "complete" a task and reopen it if need be. Each task has a description box where you can denote where you left off.
I find it handy so far, but I haven't really gone beyond basic usage.
