Typical m$ fud. The importance here is to un derstand the context in which it's being stated. In short, linux is good as competition. (It that all it is? I think not.) And Linux is bad because it ends intellectual property 'rights' (assumably bad for the software industry-the microsoft juggernaut) But what they fail to argue is what the effect is on the overall economy or the world community in general. They or anyone else cannot assume that 'intellectual property' is universally good or bad. That has yet to be determined.
If M$ really wants to engage in true, substantive debate, then do so, but let's not submit spin-doctored meaningless drivel as words of wisdom.
it's interesting that microsoft is fighting so hard to protect it's right to sell, distribute, and control trash while the open-source community is fighting so hard to give away software that works so well. There's a certain irony here.
As for standing on the backs of giants, we are. Linux et al. is simply extending on the works of others over the past thirty years or so. If one of us learns it, the rest learn it as well. It's the scientific way and it works well enough to eventually displace the rest.
Its the latest of reference tomes for perl. Like any other longstanding tool(language *and* documentation), it has evolved. The language itself is terse and therefore some feel that it reqires significant documentation to cover. I'm still kind of sad the book is so long now(It easy to write volumes, difficult to be informative and brief(but worth it)). Perhaps it was an exercise in deep analysis for the authors since a total rewrite of the language is in the works.
Frankly, I don't see this as a problem of Open/Closed source. Cheats for various games have been around since games have been. I see an interesting fork here: (1) Client registration that is cryptologically secure for "fair" clients. and (2) a "no holds barred" clients section that would allow hackers to build superbots and have them duke it out in the arena against their own type. Cyberwar of man and machine at its finest perhaps?
Linux and OSS didn't get this far by listening to the pundits or "authority" opinions. Lets just do what we do best: code; and let the "powers that be" do what they do best: create lots of hot air.
By NOT playing their game. Folks, we got where we are by doing things our own way. Once M$ gets you to play their game, you lose. Stop worrying, comparing, or competing. If Ghandi had ever started playing by the old empire rules, we wouldn't even had heard of him. Listen to Linus, he plays his own game with his own rules. M$ doesn't faze him, so it shouldn't faze us. Keep the faith folks, Linux Rules.
I've been there. Outcast because I had a high IQ, didn't do sports, you know the drill. Always remember this-you have an edge-you think and they don't. The only reason this is turning into media madness is (1) they need "news" and (2) it suggests that all is NOT well in the mainstream. The mainstream is struggling in their non-thinking way to "prove" to themselves that their way of life is still valid so they can go back to their tract houses and mindless entertainment.
You're angry and scared. Find a way to channel that into something positive. Remember-hackers often turn to Eastern philosophy. The Tao worked for me, it or some other philosophy may work for you. Learn a martial art(I learned judo), but learn the philosophical side of it too. It can give you balance and poise. The truest use of the martial arts is to learn how NOT to fight, not seek revenge.
I don't know about everybody else, but I'm tired of working my butt off and then getting called lazy. Tell you what, I'll go home, and YOU run the system, OK??? Then we won't have a y2k problem, it'll be a y1.999 1/2k problem when it crashes around YOUR LAZY BUTT...
Linux is the BEST OS ever. I wonder though if adding so many bells and whistles might ulitmately compromise its greatest strength: stability. My Linux 2.0 system has *never* crashed while my Win machines crash everyday. Let's hope not...

Socialistic darwinism at it's finest.
Kevin:
Which of the technological problems did you find to be the most satisfying to solve and why?
Also, what impact do you feel plex86 will have on the Linux community?
