  1. Gulf War on French Lawmakers Demand Source Code · · Score: 1

During the Gulf war USA knew where to bomb, because the laser printers that Iraq
bought from USA transmitted an homing signal.
Ok France and USA are not at war BUT who knows what foreign countries implements in closed software. I say that a government SHOULD be paranoid because who knows what MS and other closed software makers implement in there software.
    Remember the NSA incident...
And when reading articles like this one http://www.theregister.co.uk/000412-000020.html
    it makes me wonder...
BUT why not use Linux || other OSS software?!

  2. I was skeptical, but why not give it a try... on Ogg Vorbis And Xiphophorus · · Score: 1

Encoded some wav files using vorbis that even mp3 producer 2.1 could not handle very well in lower bitrates as 128kbps. I was surprised how good the quality was when i played back the encoded vorbis file in XMMS. Some small glitches BUT vorbis quality was superior many mp3 codecs(bladeenc, lame, xing and even fraunhoffer on some music) out there IMHO. Some vorbis encoded files was smaller in size than equivalent MP3 file, its seems that vorbis has VBR on default as bitrates seems to be different on different files. GREAT quality, non patented codec, try vorbis yourself - be amazed!

  3. Great! but this will take a loooooooong time! on Microsoft Loses · · Score: 1

MS will go to supreme court and that could take ages in computer time.
And how will this effect europe? Nothing?
No the only thing in the long run that can change the windows as the major OS for companies and users, is for them to chose another OS(Linux :) ).
That is the only way for MS to finally "lose".
This will take time as many employers at companies only knows to use windows, those will not urge for a change to Linux or any other "hard" OS.
A common view among none computer "nerds" is that they don't understand what MS has done wrong and think MS is wrongly accused.
And those users will probably still be happy to spend ,money on the next windows "upgrade".
I hope that in 2-3years Linux will be the OS of choose for ALL users, this will be interesting.
But who knows what an common OS will be like in 2-3years will it be a palmtop?
    Time to sleep...

  4. Gnome is the future?! on GUADEC Reports · · Score: 2

I think Gnome will be the "standard" desktop as the big distributors supports it, and the licensing issue with KDE(OT).
I use Gnome myself(and sometimes KDE) but i do not want KDE to stop developing, choices is always good.
Hopefully the new version of the two will support each other better.
Keep up the good work Gnome and KDE developers!

  5. This is bad... on RealNetworks Licenses MS Windows Media Codec · · Score: 1

I think Realnetwork just signed its doom.
In a year MS media format will be the facto standard on 90% of servers.
MS says "Our mediaserver is free use it..." and many admins will do just that.
MS will sell more server and to use the w2k server fully you will need to have w2k clients.
And the next big market will be streaming media as Television will move to the net.
What are the alternatives? Realmedia costs money and most companies will change there NT4 server(they have to...) to w2k servers and the MS mediaserver is included so why use realmedia.
And i don't think we will see any open source streamer in the near future, even if some gurus code an open source alternative it will need to have support from companies (remember coda and nfs) and MS will never agree on that and we all know why...
I hope in the next couple of years companies start to replace there MS win clients with Linux, but that will take time.
The next couple of years will be interesting.
