With good fortune, the fully completed 1.0 decoderwill be in CVS this weekend. This represents completion of the final decoding features missing in beta release 4 that are needed for 1.0. Specifically, this decoder release includes cascading, channel coupling, and sparse codebook support. Aside from bugfixes, no additional changes will be made to decoding through 1.0. This decoder implements all Vorbis 1.0 specification features.

:)
Keep up the good work Monty and the rest of the crew!
I downloaded RH7.X packages from
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozi ll a0.9.1/Red_Hat_7x_RPMS/
It works fine and its fast(still not as fast as old netscape but its getting there). I started tested using mozilla 0.7,that one was BAD:) - mozilla 0.9.1 is very good now. It works fine on my AMDk3-450mhz.
I will from here on use mozilla as my main browser!
I have tested Ogg Vorbis before it became beta.
And i found some samples that sounded bad even with beta3(using default encoding parameters) mind fraunhoffer, lame or bladeenc could not encode them right.
But now with Ogg Vorbis beta4 those files sounds as the orginal and are smaller than mp3(lame 128kbps).
Great work Monty and the rest of the crew!
Time to rip my cd collection.
Thanks for telling me that.
Yes it seems TT is to blame for that page.
And yes i use Gnome/sawfish but i also use KDE applications and many KDE are superior to those offered under Gnome(kppp for example).
Good luck with KDE!
Yes it is sad that KDE people must bash GNOME in this childish way:
"If Gnome is still too advanced for your taste,
you might want to run plain old Motif"
"We do not emulate Gnome's slow repaints and flicker, though."
This took away all my respect on KDE(along with Kurt KDE letter). I hope this is not the view of all KDE developers.
This is sad becuase some KDE applications are really good like kppp.
I have my DeCSS link up since the first lawsuit on European servers as i am a EU citizen(find it in the nearest DeCSS dis site.).
I sad that corp* can buy laws but that is indeed true in this case. I could care less for napster
but its absolutely absurd to forbid source.
Now the big fight has begun-mcorp* against freedom.
Its time to move underground.
Lets face it Linux lacks in the graphic and audio compared to windows and will do so a couple of more years. But with the xfree maturing and ALSA support hopefully included in the next kernel(2.6) this will change. Someone mentioned that it was hard to autodetect usb?!
It is possible to compile USB as modules, so distros could set up USB support for different
chip makers(USB is not the same on motherboards i learnt yesterday) without compiling kernel.
And the devfs(bloat people said but Linus included it anyway==good!) that detect changes and set up/dev/your_hardware_here make it easy to add new hardware. Ofcourse the sales
of Linux games wont change over night. Getting market share from windows will take
time and MS has a big grip on game developers with directx(smart move as most people who has a computer play games..). Now with the Staroffice open sourced a great office suit will emerge so hopefully that will take care of the business aspects. But for "ordinary" home user it will take longer( remember most users want games).
Myself? i use Linux for everything except games, and the games i like(driving games) is not available on Linux although i still will buy SOF.
3-4 years and this will have changed! Until then Linux is superior to windows on every aspect except graphic and sound.
Nothing is perfect that includes *NIX
There alternatives are a MS only software/web, MS media format and such shit everywhere.
And no one is going to take away CLI from you.
Dumbing down Linux is a GOOD thing for everyone!*
Linus said something like this:
He who controls clients will control servers...(think MS media server).
*except ElITE dudes who only runs Linux becuase its cool.
I tested Mozilla since M7 and now it has become usable.
Its much faster than M16 but still a little slower than Netscape4.X on some things.
Mozilla dead? no its alive and kicking!
I can only agree at most points(although i don't think there are any wrong with different windowmanagers). The gnome equivalent of OLE will be great for developers! Why bloat? GO GNOME!
SO GPL and even better it will be Gnome oriented! My favorite desktop envoirment(although blackbox is also very good on low spec machines). Way to go SUN!
If you have a real GS midi synth/module(no an sblive,awe32 wont do). You can take a look at http://www.scpop.de and http://www.lutheran-hymnal.com/organ/organhymn.h tm I say those midi files sounds very much like an real pipe organ.
Say no to software patents in europe. http://petition.eurolinux.org
If this law would be an reality then what will be the next step FTP,usenet and so on... This is absolutely absurd where in the link chain should links then be illegal? First link? second link? F**** RIAA and all other multi $ companies that only thinks about money.
And now something completely different, sign this petition(http://petition.eurolinux.org/index_html) against software patents in europe.
"Millions of Windows users tired of IRQ conflicts, eternal consultant visits, convoluted interface design, and painful aesthetics can now install Mac OS X on their existing computer, keeping their data and their applications. Millions do." How could Mac OS X change how PC are built?(IRQ conflicts...) "What about Linux? The vast majority of computer users--even professionals--want nothing to do with a command line." Ehrm use Gnome or KDE... "It could happen..." !TRUE Those Mac zealots:-)
Statistics(and common sense) clearly shows that a NO guns policy means that less people get killed I don't understand why USA must still have this policy?(still cowboys are we:-) ).
Not much to be said as most thing had been said. I don't live in USA and i my country so stupid laws does not exist YET. I would not censor anything,,, but if MS would sue they would probably win. And if it would come down to that why not move Slashdot servers to another country! That would solve everything, sad but if that is what it takes...
I don't want to go in the battle what encoder is the best...(Fraunhoffer is the best then Bladeenc then LAME if you use 128KBit encoding:-) ) But there are now alternatives that are patent free... Vorbis is very good(not as good as Fraunhoffer on some files YET) its better than Bladeenc adn LAME. Vorbis can be found here http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/index.html Those who knows how CVS works just download the source and compile. It only seems to work with redirect/pipes, so use/vorbis/examples/encoder_example. And redirect a wav file to it cat music.wav |./encoder_example > music.ogg Now use the XMMS plugin and listen, great quality some files bigger are bigger than MP3 but there are no patents involved. Don't know if it works for windows users but you could give it a try...
Yes Zdnet will probably have more banner hits. But people who don't know anything about Linux and open source, have probably read John Tasheki article and they don't know what its true(whats is truth anyway:-) ) Its good to have someone like Bob to raise his voice!(although its of Bob and RH interest...)
I use 2.3-pre5. Its stable as hell and alot faster than 2.2 for me as it supports udma for my motherboard. Install it and start sending bug reports, or better send patches. If you dont do any of these things you SHOULD NOT complain...
From the Ogg Vorbis - www site.
