  1. Re:Probably Not on Ask Slashdot: Is It Time For SyFy To Go Premium? · · Score: 1

Most shows need a warm-up period wherein the writing gets better and more in tune with the characters and actors. I agree that the pace in the first half of the season was dragging but that's why I record everything - I tend to ffwd when the going gets slow. I'll concede that the writers were a bit to enamored of the mind-swapping for a while but that did pass. It's a shame more folks didn't give the show more of a chance.

I keep hearing that SGU was disappointing for many SG fans but I really have to disagree.

I enjoyed parts 1 & 2 of the pilot, and thought the scenario had a lot of promise, but by the end of part 3 I was feeling like it had already degenerated to where all SF shows do if they run long enough. I watched one or two more episodes, and haven't bothered tuning it in since.

I can understand that - there's an inherent tension in trying to balance the science and fiction. Everyone has there own mix preference.

This is the first SG series that felt like it was written without the cheesy humor and contained real characters, not simple stereotypes that didn't evolve in the series.

The fact that some of those realistic characters were assholes was not a plus, IMO. I can see as much of that as I want in the real world.

I guess that's where I really depart from many folks. I like the fact that the 'asshole' characters are a reflection of the real life assholes we all face.

Atlantis was good but really just a copy of SG with new faces in the same characters.

I watched it now and then, but yeah, it wasn't very compelling.

How many really read a EULA? That seems to be the real issue. If you put a sign up at a public pool that says the owners are not responsible for drowning is that enough? I really have a hard time with a EULA declaring the publisher is indemnified for all work I've lost due to bugs and crashes. OTOH, I don't know that a 'sign' that is so dense and for all practical purposes never read can/should be enforcible in either direction.

I think it may be true that we can find a mathematical way to interpret everything in nature, but I'm not sure I believe that math or science is the underlying basis of life, the universe, and everything. Think of math and science as a lens through which we view nature. Our knowledge colors our perception.

I do agree we could figure out a way to apply mathematics to a natural 'function' so that we could more easily understand the origin and outcome of said function.

Saw a very interesting talk about fractal geom. at siggraph one year where the lecturer could map fractal relationships to a vast array of images, music and other qualitative forms of expression. He had a specific fractal ratio(I believeit was 1/f?) that could be used to programatically create art and music that was pleasing to the eyes and ears, respectively. I'm too lazy to look it up at the moment.

I will concede, however, that the answer is 42.

Wow, that's a pretty extreme definition of terrorism.

There is a difference between breaking into a companies network out of curiosity and breaking into a millitary network.

hmmm... Are you saying that morality can be judged as a function of whether or not a particular act is committed against the state or a private company?
