1. If I recall on Appeals Court Will Take Microsoft Case · · Score: 1

I was watching CNN and they said that 7 judges were hearing the case and that three had stepped out.

I really don't know why they bother. Does this remind anyone of IBM? By the time IBM finished with appeals, etc, IBM was no longer a monopoly. I feel the same will happen here with Microsoft. By the time this thing gets through the courts, things will have changed enough to make it not matter anymore.

I'm not saying Linux/Mac/etc are going to unseat MS, but who can say what the future brings.

  2. To sum up on EU Web Tax Proposed · · Score: 1

Here's a summary of what the article says for anyone too lasy to look at it:

"The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, said the proposals are designed to create a level playing field for the taxation of online purchases for goods such as music, videos and computer games."

  3. Diablo 2 on Diablo 2 Goes Gold · · Score: 2

As someone mentioned earlier, the game is more like Diablo 1.5. I've been beta testing it for a few weeks now and although the graphics and gameplay are the same, we really can't say for sure what it is like until it actually ships.

Remember, this was the beta used to stress test the battle.net servers. We aren't beta testing the final product and as such we haven't seen half the quests, the areas, the monsters, etc. Just a small sliver of what is available. So until the game actually ships, to me anyway, it stays as Diablo 2 and I look foward to it.
4. Hmmm... on Do-It-Yourself Sue Napster Software · · Score: 1

Why did I write this application? I have a very clear interest in the success of the entertainment industry in the digital age. While many people try to argue their theft with variants of "information should be free" it is simply not true.

I hate to admit it, but I understand his point. I think someone said it best, if you own the CD, why let Napster have access to it? You really have no reason to share your music with other people.

  5. WTF? on They Don't Make Them Like They Used To · · Score: 2

Are people nuts? They are actually pissed that their hardware doesn't stand up to being shot? Call this a flame (which means automatic karma on slashdot for some reason), but I think you're all nuts.

I seem to recall a time when hard drives cost a few hundred bucks for 20 megs. Nice, big-ass hard drive. It could probably stop a train. Or, we could spend that few hundred bucks on a current device, one that costs less to manufacture, and get a lot more for our buck.

Granted, huge advances have allowed us to get that much space. But if giving up the iron solar-flare paneling is going to save me 50 bucks on my next hard drive purchase, get rid of it. I don't take my machines in to areas where they are going to get shot.

  6. Re:The real interest... on Pushing Microwaves Faster Than Light · · Score: 1

"Sadly for those who would like to see a computer chip without a speed limit, the trick would help the signals travel closer to the speed of light, but not beyond it, he said."

The problem they mentioned was the inability to process the signal received quick enough (at least, that's what I gathered). For those of you who haven't read the article, read at least the first little bit. It's pretty interesting.

  7. Lame on Smell Of Fresh Cut Grass Trademarked · · Score: 1

I disagree with copyrights in general, but this one is more lame. Not because some dollar-perfume company is going to go out of business, but what about companies that are working on creating scents for virtual reality or motion machines? Now they will be required to license the scents.

And then what, apparently the smell of grass can no longer be duplicated. What next, shit?

  12. Re:I hate to say it... on Net Gambler Sues Credit Card Company · · Score: 1

Now that I think about it though, maybe this guy isn't so dumb. Maybe he realizes the legal system doesn't hold people accountable for their actions so if he can get out of debt in a lawsuit, why not? Perhaps it's the legal system that has allowed people to win stupid lawsuits that is most at fault here.

The problem with this is that if I were an individual and I realized that this was a law (that I could go in to debt and be forgiven), I could then try to get a credit card, go in to debt by gamling online, then ask it to be thrown out on account of this case (if it wins). If the courts find in favor of the guy suing, it could open up a whole landslide of cases.

There seem to be a lot of stupid lawsuits and what I am worried about is that they are becoming more and more prevalant. I await the day when I have to dig a hole and hide in it for fear of being sued.
