I use a variety of WMs (depending on my mood). Mostly its E.. Guess I like having eye candy to show off.
But anyways... as for Gnome and KDE. I tried out KDE-1.98 beta and Helix Gnome and they have gotten only better. We have a choice of desktops and now we have a choice of GREAT desktops.
They have at least 2 shelves filled with legal books. If this digital textbook thing becomes alive then they too have to spend thousands of dollars to keep their legal books active and current.
Microsoft the trendsetter... a suggestion that Windows pricing will be based on subscription . Now books too? This will lead to more people not being educated because they cannot afford to study.

C'mon.... Apple users remind me of masochists. I for one believe most people who go to dungeons to get themselves whipped are probably Mac users. After all they support Apple vigorously even after Apple screws its own fans time after time.
I work at a place where there are 3 Mac users and one especially rabid one. He keeps harping about features that I have had in my Linux box since before kernel 2.0.
The only thing Mac OS X will have that my Linux box wont is Quicktime 4
When I was working for a company in NJ we hired an MCSE guy, since the company i worked for was a pure NT shop. When he started he had to help out at the support desk and thats when we realised that he should NEVER be let near computers..
A PC wasnt connecting to the Domain so we let our new 'expert' take charge of the repair brigade. He called back in about 15 minutes stating that he tried everything including replacing the NIC card while the PC was running. Hearing that I was concerned and did try to dismiss that sinking feeling hoping that he meant removing and reinstalling the driver.. when I went down to check... i fact he HAD done what he stated and we had ourselves one fried PC;)
He was fired the same day and adviced that he doesnt touch computers for the sake of his own health..
But bashing the MCSE certification doesnt make sense. No matter what the course is about you'll still have people who take the courses and get jobs based on certification. People want money, cert gets a good job and they are happy about it... The RHCEs are graduating now and coming into the workforce and soon we'll start seeing kooky Linux engineers;)
Simple guidelines:
Before you hire, do a test as part of the interview.. give some real world problems (For my on-interview test I had to setup an ipfwadm configuration script and couple of other shell scripts and some C++ programs)
Check references thoroughly... just because www.thisphonylife.com is a company, it doesnt mean that the person who you are interviewing did any real work for them.
As for certifications, they should be a bonus part of the qualification.. dont base it on that.. many more people who know what they are doing who dont have certification (possibly cause they were working instead of reading books)
Lets say you write a piece of software which you license etc and make your living off that. Now if I come along as say you must make it free, even after all the time you spent and all the work you did, would you want to make it free thereby denying you the income you hoped to generate and completely nullifying the reason you created that piece of software?... Nope didnt think so..
Or if you write a piece of software and release it under GPL, and I use your sources to create a binary proprtietary product and sell it and make money, will you stand still for that?
IP, copyright and GPL are there to protect what the author had in mind for that piece of software that he/she created. We all scream bloody murder when Be violated the GPL with one of their libraries, yet we see stealing proprietary code as ok. This unfortunately is our double-standard.
Sega makes no money off their consoles, same as Sony with their PlayStation and Nintendo with their consoles. They make their money through licensing and software deals.
I also heard that if you sign up with SegaNet (their ISP service) You get a Dreamcast for free.
Well the games are Sega's to begin with, they are the ones who spent money to create those games and why should anyone be so surprised if they decide not to release it free and under GPL?
Possibilities are like someone else posted, selling them again as 'classics' or totally making a newer game based on the older one. They created it, so they should have the right to do with it as they please. Yes having illegal copies of ROMS are a copyright violation and especially in the gaming industry, ideas, look and feel, etc etc of games ARE Intellectual property.
Arent we supposed to get refunds on software that we dont use? For example if I get a Dell computer with Windows 2000 on it and if I have to get another license to install my customised windows image on this machine, then since I am not using the Win2k which came pre-installed.... that means I should return the unused Win2k CD and license back to MS for a full refund?
Like we will ever get refunds from Microsoft anyways...
It is illegal to give software away if lets say you buy a game and then give the CD to someone else who can play it while you are still using it.
If you steal an idea and then give it away, then not only do you take away from the expected profit from the product, but giving it away also lowers the market value for the product.
Being a consumer you may not understand the larger # of man hours that might have gone behind making the product.
If you want to give away something that is yours feel free, just dont give something which belongs to me away without my consent.
Back to the topic at hand, Cobalt suing apple over the Cube design is completely pointless. I think I will go to the patent office tomorrow and patent the sphere, tocahedron, cuboid and the smell of flatulence so I can sue soccer ball manufacturers, and basically people who smell like shit.
stick their cube up their ass as slow and painful as it might be..
I have an old NeXT cube sitting on my desk right now, with a 21in b/w monitor, the machine has a hard drive, (nope not the early ones with the optical drive).
If Cobalt can sue Apple then apple can sue back since they bought NeXT they own the NeXT cube 'trademark' ?
wasnt the upcoming card from Bitboys.fi s'posed to have memory right on the GPU. Just went to their page and no more information about the Blaze 3d. Any1 know what happened to that project?
I agree KDE is extremely stable. But Gnome isnt that buggy either. I have had absolutely no issues running either of the Window Environments. If you want something tried and true, then get fvwm or windowmaker or something.:)
This guy has a very nicely done speech for an intended audience of people who think they bought their internet along with the discout PC at Best Buy. In simple terms it is directed at people who dont know how the different technologies used on the net works. But for every other person this speech reeks of corporate "We will fight anything that doesnt allow us to rip of Mr John.Q.Consumer."
Now I ask you, could they have spent all this energy and time and money, trying to derail a technology which can never be derailed. Maybe not Napster, but other similar technologies as well. They could have spent some of this money for R&D in using this technology in totally legal music distribution.
But WAIT!! They have probably realised that with such technology, the artists probably dont need the record companies anymore. These files can be downloaded and played on many MP3 players available out there. So there goes their CD sales anyways. They figure if the artists can somehow use a service not to dissimilar to Napster then Them[the record companies] are no longer needed and I will use the right analogy unlike the speaker.. record companies going the way of the dodo
So pretty much Seagrams is trying to wring out every last cent they can out of us the consumer and them the artists.
I use MTV on my Linux i386. Only the GUI based app is time limited, the command line based app is free. for example u could use mtvp or mtvp vcd: for vcds. With plugger myv works fine. P.S I registered and received the reg key so I can use forward, rewind etc etc. But since the only VCDs we can purchase are porn ones.. I doint think I should have bothered:)
Unless you have to use a 1-900 number to call MS

Netscape doesnt even really crash the X session .. most times Netscape itself just dies.
..no crashes nothing ..
I have been using Mozilla mostly and so far
One of my favourite games does not run on Win2k ..

Jedi Knight
Win2k does run Quake1,2,3 , UT, Deus Ex, Diablo II etc etc.

these morons charecterise that as criminal?
...
.. now is that illegal?
..
.. not some corporate republic
If i write a piece of software which is unique then that is MY Intellectual property. If i choose to give it away I can
The fact that we want all code to be open
Its like saying that people who think drugs should be legalized are drug addicts
I am still waiting for the day America becomes a free country
Be vewwy vewwy careful if you buy a Sony computer. When you finish installing Napster on it or play an 'illegal MP3' it will explode.
