  1. Useability of Star Office on StarOffice 5.2 Preview · · Score: 1

I don't really like MDI applications to begin with. Star Office takes a major leap beyond MDI and throws all their 'applications' into one window as well. And they throw in a start button, file manager, and web browser, and ...

I get the impression that Star Office is pretty much a full desktop environment. You don't need to 'leave' your desktop to 'do anything'. They're building their desktop environment from the application level downwards, instead of from the OS up (like GNOME or KDE) -- a nice idea for maintaining consistency across multiple platforms. But what I would really like to see is for Star Office to have some options to allow it to play more fairly with the other tools available in the currently running desktop environment. As wonderful as some people may find the integrated file manager, task bar, and start button, I would rather stick to the info and tools provided by the underlying OS/window mgr.

  3. a question... on DoubleClick Workaround: IDcide · · Score: 1

Shouldn't a group of cooperating companies be able to effectively shield their cooperation from the public's view using some kind of VPN? It won't be long before a few larger companies put some xml to use and coordinate their data in such a way that the consumer will be blind to it.

It is a great thing to put this kind of knowledge in the hands of the average user. It doesn't bother me so much that a company wants to figure out what I like and don't like -- it bothers me that they try to hide their profiling. Bring the information out in the open, and we'll have a more even playing field.

  4. the MPAA would never show any bias... on MPAA Investigates Apex DVD Player · · Score: 3

The playstation II has been out for so little time in Japan, and I have already seen instructions out there to bypass region codes. Why doesn't the MPAA attack Sony?

There are larger brand names out there than Apex who are making a laughing stock of the region coding system -- some of these companies are still too big for the MPAA to handle. My guess is that the MPAA is going up against this manufacturer simply because it figures it can throw enough legal red tape in the right places to stop it.

Would the MPAA try to push around Sony? how about Panasonic? ...I sincerely hope that Apex brings this bias up in court, and proves that the MPAA is behaving like a corporate hypocrite.

  5. Re:Why not? on Microsoft On Linux: Forecast Or Fantasy? · · Score: 1

sure, most people who do use linux have a beef against MS. The corporate world is still pretty much owned by MS-everything for standard workstations among employees.

If MS does go forward with a port, it will be based on the potential demand from the business world -- not the home-brewed linux folk... if a work is in progress, we won't see it until this demand is high enough.
