Well put. But I don't think the Queen ever actually held the ring to give it back to Frodo. The ring was actually so powerful she barely had the willpower to resist taking the ring when he offered it to her.

In the article on Salon they claim you said

    ""
"I'm not a typical hacker!" he insists -- but he
does read "bug reports," in which hackers list the
flaws they've discovered in software programs and
    operating systems.
    ""

IMHO this is what makes you and all the rest of
us, who don't publicize and get political, part of
the Old School. Hackers use what they have at
hand, if it doesn't work, play with it til it
    does.

A script kiddie wouldn't have been able to
even pull off the basic stuff it sounds like you
did. The facts are, you cracked the site and
didn't really hurt anyone or steal credit card
numbers. You did however use the info to get on
    the show. (Way to go)

    Here's the question...

Was getting hit by a girl worth it? I would
think so, but I don't want to make any
    assumptions.

The place where these devices would make the most difference is in the public/consumer arena. Will the government ever let something like this outside of DoD use without putting proprietery loopholes in it for getting the keys back? I don't think so.

I've been frequenting /. for a few months now, and I have never seen such a harsh critique. Every comment so far except this one seems to think Lion's paper should be drawn and quartered.

I know most people here are techies and linux addicts, hell I'm one of them; but why not actually try to figure out what the writer is trying to communicate instead of tearing specifics of the article apart.

    HUMBLE REQUEST
If any of you have better opinions on where the industry is going to go, in reference to methods/philosophy/ethics in development mentioned in the paper. I want to read them. Reply to this, or even post your own writings to /., I don't care. Give me better ideas, not "you didn't have every single little fact right in your article".

If it weren't for Bill using mass marketing and shoving new and better, bug filled apps and OS's down the public's throat. The WWW, E-Commerce, URL's on Billboards and the public actually cozying (is that a word?) up to technology would have taken another 25 to 30 years to get to the point we are now. If we think most of the cracks on companies come from kids who are using the right tools to the wrong ends, then why is it 72% of the corporations immediately think their competitors are responsible. I know I'm paranoid, but 72% is extreme paranoia IMHO.

And another thing, why the hell are hackers getting all the negative publicity when the companies think their competition is responsible? I know half of the reason is due to the media's lack of knowledge on the definitions of "hacker" and "cracker", but there's gotta be more to it.
