Hmmm, did you manage to read the answers to these questions?!? 1. Was it your decision, your manager, your lawyers or record company that made the call to go after the Napster users? Answer: "...I mean, I can just barely...I know how to get onto AOL, and I will say that I have used AOL a couple of times..." - Who cares? What was the question? 2. With other programs such as Gnutella, Freenet, etc... don't you think that you should be spending your time and money developing your own Internet solution......rather than trying to push back the flow of technology...? Answer: You don't sit down and sort of try and sort of justify yourself, well, 'Maybe our time and energy would be better spent thinking about something a year or two from now.' - Hmm, Lars, I do this... it's called planning for my future. In business it's called forecasting, and since you just bang the skins, and don't take care of the business far be it for you to think about your future. 3....You were quoted as saying something like (paraphrased): "Napster takes our music and treats it as a commodity, instead of as art." Answer: Yeah. I mean, OK, 1st of all, let's start by making sure that I am not the one who decides that a Metallica CD should sell for 16 dollars. - Hey Lars, whose music is it? If you don't decide how much to sell it for how can yu decide that $0.00 is to little?!?
these are my first replies, and more are to come... regards, Benjamin Carlson
Lars, I'm afraid has backed up my theory that rock musicians are not too bright. But thanks for responding to the questions, Lars. regards, Benjamin Carlson
Thanks,Rob... as for the rest of these people, obviously they aren't smart enough to recognize a true Dumbass, even when it splatters them with fecal matter. POS = Point of Sales... regards, Benjamin Carlson
No kidding!! Aren't we supposed to be "innocent until proven guilty"?!!? At least the Chinese government has excuses/reasons for censoring... they are communist! regards, Benjamin Carlson
Do penguins have teeth? If not, then it wouldn't be too painful for them to gum their feet for a while. Oh, also their feet are webbed, so do they gnaw on the web, or the "toes"? If one did this often enough would they pehaps develop a rash? hmmmm....
SGI and High Availability Linux Clusters
on
Linux Failover?
·
· Score: 2
I recently attended the SGI University, and besides recieving a little Tux doll, I sat through some fairly inane discussions about SGI. BUT, this may help you out... they had a session on clustering for high availability. They mainly spoke about being able to hide planned downtime by using 'High Availability, Mission Critical' Clusters where if one failed (or was shutdown for maintenance) the other would automatically pick up the slack... they also spoke of this with regards to Beowulf clusters... you may want to check out their open source area also, and see if any of this software is publicly available yet. It does sound like they are heading in the right direction with getting into Linux... Hope this helps regards, Benjamin Carlson
If so where do I get it?!? I want a porn link on my desktop, and all my Windows/Outlook buddies already have it... (muttering)what good is an OS if you can't have a desktop link to porn... cheers! benjamin carlson
Having the knowledge, and experience to build this type of system, have you been contacted by individuals, or companies about helping/building another for them? If so are you concerned about the legalities of exporting a beowulf super-computer? I am inquiring in reference to the US Governments restrictions on Cray Research and others exporting systems of this processing power. regards, Benjamin Carlson
...that none of our government agencies are stopping this blatant progression of freedom! Why, anyone of these recent recipients could go out and... (dare I say it?)... log onto...NAPSTER!!! good god what is wrong with these people... our innocent children being sucked into a den of horrors, hell they might even start using Open-source software!! regards, Benjamin Carlson
This post seems like a non-worthwhile, self-aggrandizing, pointless display of the lack of any apptitude what-so-ever. If this guy won't even thanksomeone for pointing out the fact that his company's URL is broken, then we should probably shut him edown... regards, Benjamin Carlson
Toupsie, Thanks for your informative reply, I agree with you that we need to use whatever gets the job done, but I also think that using an innovative, yet free product is the best way (within reason) to get the job done. I also use Closed-source, for-profit software, but I loathe paying actual *money* for it!:o) anyhow, thanks for the answers, regards, Benjamin Carlson
So, will mac open-source their Mac XOS? I'm a linux guy through and through, but having someone else add/refine another '*x' kernel sure would be nice... also is there any talk of recompiling for Intel/Alpha processors, and what kind of compatability will Linux apps have on this OS? regards, Benjamin Carlson
I wasn't thinking SSH either. Couldn't this little device act as a standalone workstation? then you could use both graphical, and terminal based apps, and be able to do all but the most intensive work on this device hooked directly into your network as another workstation. Hmmm, I could think about this all day! regards, Benjamin Carlson
Well, the lawyers have it! (the truth that is...) Just how much input did CaptTaco, and all y'all have into this wonderful letter? I'm sure most/.er's would agree with me that a lawyer who knows anything about software is hard to come by, and one who opposes a huge corporation like Microsoft (and the ability to bill such a client many $$ per hour)is even more difficult! praise the heavens for angels in Lawyers clothes! regards, benjamin carlson
No kidding...hadn't thought of portable sys-admin functions... that actually is interesting... then instead of having to log on and off many terminals at other places in the building I could just bring it with me, and stay logged in. Would it auto-logout if you go out of range? I also wonder how you could set it up to logout if the battery dies, it gets dropped, and on and on... regards, Benjamin Carlson
I think the web pad is so darn cute! I'm not certain what application one would have in my business, so I'd better get one and write some apps! The thought of having a wireless transmitter to a Point of Sales server would be interesting... then my waitress might be able to get my order right... regards, Benjamin Carlson
Hey, I thought that Jerry Seinfeld was the highest paid freely distributed entertainer, oops, guess not. You Metallica boys feel you need to get out and show how anti-anti society you are. Television and radio are probably the oldest 'freely distributed' mediums, and I hadn't heard of Jerry Seinfeld suing every VCR owner for taping his episodes, and passing them on... hey I mean I could go and see his stand up act, and pay money to do that... I could buy his comic tapes, and on and on, but where would I see him for the first time? The first time I heard of Jerry Seinfeld was when his show aired on TV. The first time I heard of Metallica was on a cassette tape COPY of Master of Puppets. Hmmm I guess I shouldn't have borrowed that tape... then you wouldn't have profited from me purchasing every album you've put out. Well, thanks for listening, I'm off to find a new band to idolize for their morals... Maybe Rage Against the Machine... oh wait, I just heard they made nice with the machine... it seems to be doing their laundry. regards, Benjamin Carlson
The company I work for is going through a somewhat similar legal battle. We are using php to dynamically generate web pages filled with business listing on different localities around the country. A competitor took the generated HTML and copied it onto a static page complete with my spelling mistakes, and a couple of listings that fell out of alphabetical order (it was the first rendition posted). We have the html printed out, and dated/notarized, but how do you explain to the layman(jury) that this is stealing? we had several weeks into collecting this data, and they swiped it in two seconds! As for ownership of html/websites, My company goes by the understanding that until the last bill is paid, entire ownership(minus any customer supplied images/text) is owned by us, and once the final bill is paid, the customer takes complete ownership. Just like when you drop your car off at the garage. regards, Chiaben
