Hate to mention it, but no, there actually WAS graphical things before X. (There is a rumor that color even existed back in 1950, but this is probably some sort of Microsoft FUD or insane linux zealot trying to make microsoft look bad.) Or else BSD invented it and linux copied it.:)
What would be the advantages to moving to an entirely NEW windowing system? This as opposed to moving to X 4.0. The new system would have to be at least marginally compatible with current X libraries, or everything will at least have to be recompiled
YAA! Cmon' Rebooting 'cuz the log is full is the same as rebooting 'cuz/var is full. oh wait. We did have var fill up and we did NOT reboot. NOTNOTNOT! Didn't even bring it down to single user mode:)
Exactly. Linux users are much more likely to recompile/rebuild/tweak the kernel, whereas *BSD users just run it. They wait for the kernel writers to distribute and don't bother rebooting. I have a linux boxen up 236 days and it won't get rebooted
What is this first post stit? It seems that every single article on/. has some moron about three comments down saying "first post" first post up yo arse!
You might not sue but you sure get paid big if you're a company and they cause a loss of connection - ie through a cut in the line. They you get to send a bill to your service provider saying "We lost this much because of your stupidity. Pay" And they do.
You can use a linux server to server HUGE numbers of users. I set one up for a telecommunications server. It has only one problem - you have to rotate the logs from sendmail or the system will BOG DOWN HARD. This happens when the logs get to be about 10 megs each. Just need a Pentium Pro at 200 MHz or maybe dual and gigs of space and gig of ram (That's what the system was)
Redunand power, raid, linux, GB ram, etc? Extremely reliable? Try www.land5.com Their specialty is high powered intel/alpha servers, run cold (5 degrees above room temp with 18 scsi UW half heights!) The hardware raid goes to 345 GB and runs under linux. I know because I installed linux on the system for them (redhat 5.2, all needed was MEM=960 on krnl cmdline, and then manual fdisk because the controller only shows 64 BGs)

Didn't anyone notice the article on ZDNET showing
linux w/ apache faster than NT w/ ISS?
Even the ZDNET guys saw that one!
