    Yeah. Exactly.

    I'm thinking roughly along the lines of what Nintendo did with that weird cart for the SNES that allowed you to play GameBoy games. Basically, the games were enhanced.

    Why not make PSX a VM spec and add enhancements that games could optionally take advantage of? This could potentially allow PSX and PSX2 developers to add, say, optional multiplayer modes to their games. :^)

    It's just a thought.

    I think the fear is that Microsoft, being the wonderful, ethical, and understanding company it is, would sue for libel against every Slashdot poster that ever said anything about the company.

    In short, it's (hopefully) going for a legal loophole; it's kinda like using "Froot Loops" in a competitor's ad and covering up the "Froot" portion of the name.

    Seem to remember seeing ads recently that *do* use *real* products.

    The thing is, you can't make unsubstantiated, unresearched claims in an ad; otherwise, you have to make claims like "better than the leading brand." Otherwise, the FTC (in the US) gets ya...

    That is, perhaps, why advertising has become such a wasted effort in the US, save for product recognition and recall.

    This is the kind of clueless statement I've been seeing a lot on Slashdot lately. That reminds me of a friend of mine that was originally from Yemen and moved to Jordan before he came to school in the US. He occasionally berates some of us for being "stupid Americans," but when I said something to him one day about "at least you've got one thing in common with Jewish people--you don't eat pork," his reply was, "What? No, Jewish people eat pork...don't they?" I mean, he lived in *Jordan*, for Pete's sake! :^) It's like me not knowing anything about folks from Missouri or Indiana (I live in Illinois.)

    Your beef seems to be with the content of the article, not Time Domain. If you have a problem with the wording of the article, try to contact the author of the article.

    I agree, this just sounds like radio; however, this sounds like digital communication with radio frequencies. Still sounds a lot better than anything available in the private sector so far. Don't get your panties in a bunch! :^)

    Personally, I would have very little problem switching names if, say, the GNU project were to say, "Hey, Linus, wanna be part of the GNU project?" and Linus agreed. However, that ignores one fact:

    -not all GNU projects have GNU in their name (despite their use of GNU in the name.) Case in point: Window Maker.

    However, since the *true* reason (I assume) for the proposed name change is ego puffing, I cannot and will not use that atrocious GNU/Linux name.

    The senseless flames, and, indeed, they are senseless...some of the flames are, in fact, agreeing with what he said while sounding as if they disagree...either that or the posters haven't bothered to read the whola article, prove him right.

    It also sounds as if he needs some downtime. Cut him some slack; like him or not, like his methods or not, he's done a lot for us.

    That being said, there's no way I'm qualified for the job. ;^)

    As I remember, he got calls from reporters after "The Cathedral & The Bazaar" got so much attention.

    Therefore, he was getting flamed for representing people that didn't ask for the representation, and didn't even ask to be the representment for the community in the first place. It was just a happy accident, as I understand it (using his influence, as it were.)

    Thanks to nice folks like you, we've lost a spokesperson.

    People like yourselves decided to trash him for not having contributed more than fetchmail, wasn't as important as RMS, etc. etc. ad nauseum.

    He wrote "The Cathedral and The Bazaar," got attention, was surprised to get *so* much attention...

    and folks like yourselves started saying, "ESR, what a fuckin' loser, he doesn't deserve to be famous, what has he done..."

    He helped things happen--check out www.mozilla.org, for Pete's sake. If it weren't for his essay, "The Cathedral and The Bazaar," that probably wouldn't have happened.

    So, to all those folks that have berated and belittled ESR, up yours.

    Quite frankly, I'm assuming that one would have to have some knowledge of the algorythm(s) involved...

    ...and the best source of that knowledge is the source. You'd *derive* (hint, hint) your solution from the source code.

    It's funny you should mention the word minority.

    At my university, we've had students try to use the excuse, "You're failing me because I'm black." (Substitute another minority group here.) In any case I've seen, it's not the person's minority group status that's the problem, it's that they couldn't be bothered to do the work or even pay attention.
