Just a slight correction, I believe it is http://yourdevicename.yourname.operaunite.com./ At least that what it is for me.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you but it does depend on the industry you're in. If you are a stock broker (depending on the firm), you're clientèle is built by you and owned by you. When you do end your career you can sell your clientèle, sometimes for well over 1,000,000. Someone close to me just retired and sold their book for about 3m so I know this to be true. I know this varies from firm to firm and probably even within a firm.

It's not an either-or. If you own cigarettes, then they own you.

False. I own cigarettes. When I quit I did not throw out my pack. I bought cigars, my favorite brands of cigs, and chew. They sit on my mantle. If I decide I want to smoke, they are there. For myself, not possessing cigarettes is not enough to stop my from smoking. If I didn't have to actively say no to smoking I would have never been able to quit. I own cigarettes because they don't own me.

Indeed! I don't think that average user notices how fast pages load when it's such a minimal difference (or does the average /.er). I think one of the biggest problems is that there is little to no innovation with IE. Granted I don't use IE, but it seems most of the features that seem neat to users, are passed down from Opera, FF, Safari or elsewhere. In my mind, neat features are the reason the average user choses one browser over another, not super fast text rendering.

This sort of comment is a bit frustrating to me. Some can tell the difference between even the most minute differences in lossy vs lossless. They may be a dramatic minority, but all the same, they are entitled to spend 3 month salary on their equipment to enjoy music as they see fit. Similarly, I can't enjoy a $1000 bottle of wine any more than a $100 bottle; but that's no reason to say that a $100 bottle of wine is just as good as the $1000 wine because the vast majority can't tell the difference. I recognize the validity of you're point, in that most can't tell the difference, but would like to pretend they can.

Even if it seemed reasonable, give it a week or two and most would hastily click 'agree' without reading. It would be like UAC in Vista, not the worst idea at the core, but the poorest possible implementation.

Also, you can move the wand.dat file to another computer (with Opera). Then just use you're master password. Saves you from having to remember you're passwords on every computer.
