We have digital tv here now, including PalPlus which is a format that transmits tv shows etc in 16:9 format. In the US, you have none such things, you're still stuck with NeverTheSameColor TV;-)
Widescreen TVs are slowly but surely catching on here I think. But as long as nobody airs in 16:9 format in the US, what do you need a widescreen TV for, anyway?
As an aside, I find it a little ironical that Europe is overtaking the US in the terms of hightech TV standards.;-)
Since when has the US ever been "morally superiour" to the rest of the world? Sure, it's democratic and reasonably free, there's worse places, but have we forgotten the slaughtering of the natives, slavery, the nuking of Japan, the nuclear tests conducted on their own citizens, the use of chemical weapons in south east asia, illegal bombings of lybia and other countries, Echelon, the KKK, Watergate, The Monica Thingie, and a myriad other things?
Don't get me wrong - as I said, there's worse places than the US. But the United States have never been, are not, and probably will never be "morally superior" to the rest of the world.
I refuse to believe that Sir Arthur C. Clarke means this list of predictions seriously. It reads like a "Wouldn't it be nice if.." more than any kind of at least semi-serious prediction about the future. Most of the stuff he "predicts" will never happen - or at least not nearly as soon as he says. I think Clarke is getting rather cynical at us here... We all know the world 50 years down the road will be a nasty mess with 30+ nuclear weapons nations and China, a country which does not have any respect for human rights whatsoever, becoming the world's most powerful industrialized nation. We haven't even started to solve issued like pollution, the hole in the ozone layer, the destuction of the rain forests, and whaling. We play with nuclear power and obviously can't handle it. Not to mention the recent moves by certain governments to trying to catch up to 1984, finally. So what if they're 30 years late?
No, What Clarke proposes is not a prediciton, at all. The only thing that he does - and it's a good thing he does - is showing the mainstream public some things that COULD be - if we only worked hard enough.
Maybe he'll inspire a few readers to achieve something for the improvement of human life.
And just maybe, reading his "predictions", a couple of youngsters will not become as cynical as I am. And that, in itself, would be a noble thing to achieve.
Breaking them up is good, as it would HOPEFULLY prevent them from creating "hidden" apis for their apps to work better and break competitors apps. It would increase competition and thus quality of MS products.
However, breaking them up isn't enough. You ALSO have to alleviate them of some of their illegally gained cash, and you have to open up existing Windows and WindowsNT source code, to level the playing field.
Oh... yeah. And retire Bill Gates and take away his cash - maybe leave him with US$10 Mio for "nice try".;-)
Amazing. You'd think the Dutch, after being fucked by the Germans not even 60 years ago, had a little more brains when it comes to these things. Sad, sad.....:(
Mind you, there are in all earnesty those who say that back people (or yellow or white or moslems or christians or whatever) are not sentient human beings but mere animals.
So they should be allowed to murder them?
No.
Besides, you can't just kill a dog and get away with it, there's animal protection laws (at least here in Germany - I don't know about whatever place you might happen to call home).
Yes, some ideas are indeed dangerous, and you have to fight them. Stop the insanity at the root. People who are convinced that killing off handicapped children is a good idea should not hold a position in an institute of learning, and should definitely not be paid by those institutes to spout off their insane dreams.
I am not sure if he would really have risen to power in 1933, or not. Conditions weren't exactly the same, and I am not an expert on early 20th century US history. But someone with a little more subtlety could easily turn the US into a dictatorship. Oh of course officially you'd still be a democracy.... but even a democracy can be a very facist state. The US is not that much better than other countries, it's just you're so far usually on the side of the winners.
As for not electing exceptionally bad leaders, I dunno. Your parliaments seems to be full of them, looking at what kind of laws your folks have been passing the past few years.;-)
Survival of the fittest? Yeah, right! What next? Bring us back to 1940s ideologies? The Nazis thought Jews were not fit to live. Or the racists in America, who think blacks are not worth to live, because they must be inferior?
Why did everybody make such a fuss about that, then? Who are you to tell them they're wrong? Afterall, the fit killing those who are weak is an OK thing in your very own words: "Why should we resist the natural processes of life?"
But you show your true attitude at the end of the post:
By bestowing a life long burden on the taxpayers to support a child that should have been naturally un-selected, we are in essence creating a life where there should never have been one.
Basically what you say is that children should be killed because they cost the taxpayer money. This is probably the most disgusting attitude a human being can have. You should be ashamed of yourself. I can't even come up with a good term to describe you. You disgust me.
Do you at least realize how fscking dangerous such ideas are?
Sometimes when I read posts like this I am glad Hitler was not born in America - Many people over there probably still would cheer him as a hero.
You forget that it's an old idea. The last to try it plunged the world into a long and bloody war. Yes, such ideas are what made Hitler and his minions famous. This professor should be resigned from his position, such suggestions and ideas are highly dangerous.
Besides it'd be a violation of human rights. But who cares about such petty details. Another example of the bigots that make up America these days. Blame China for human rights violations, but when an American professor suggests killing handicapped babies, he gets cheered and it's all covered by free speech and a great thing to be protected and fostered. Bah! I am disgusted.
And I was gonna ask - what user do you think would not only notice the performance hit, but also know what is to blame?
People are used to getting abysmal performance out of their machines. Few computers you buy "as is" are decent. It isn't so long ago that you'd still buy computers with 32 MB of ram - WAY too much for Win95, let alone Win98 or even NT.
As for professional use, well, I guess they won't be upgrading to Merced (I refuse to call it That New Name) too soon. Or maybe they'll just get free update vouchers for Windows 2064 with every Merced.
I think most of the major distributions include several gpl'ed games. You can bet that they will also include DOOM, now - Afterall after so many years, it'll still have some marketing pull.
Actually I can imagine that you DO want the server to get "slashdotted" by people who see the movie... My, this sounds like the perfect modern version of branding / product placement in movies...
Things really got weird when they looked at Pioneer 11, a sister ship headed in the opposite direction, and then at the Ulysses probe, currently circling the sun. They, too, seemed to be experiencing unexplained tug in the direction of the sun.
So this would mean that:
All probes use the same instruments (I can see this for the two pioneers, but ulysses? This'd be easy to find out though I guess, and NASA would've checked it first)
It's always towards the sun... coincidence?
The question is: Do other probes experience a similar "problem"? We've sent so many to space, if it's really a phenomen of gravity or whatnot, it should be universally observed.
Another quesition would be, at exactly what distance is Ulysses orbiting the sun? If it's closer to the sun, particle density etc. should be relatively easy to determine.
Somehow I seriously doubt the answer can be easily determined or will even pop up to be some instrument fault etc - NASA would check into these things painstakingly before they released such things. They would also not have said something if it was within the "normal error range".
Unfortunately I am not into astrophysics... so I am mostly clueless... Give me a cisco router any day, but I'll have to surrender before a Pioneer probe.:)
We conclude that Murphy's proposal (radiation of the power of the main-bus electrical systems from the rear of the craft) can not explain the anomalous Pioneer acceleration.
Someone who has more time and knowledge of the matter should look into these....
Hmmm... So is this solved or not? Any definite answers? Maybe the slashdot editors can engage in that wonderful journalism mode again and seek some answers for us?:-)
I bet these are fakes.. :-)
But I must admit, they look great. If they're faked, Palm should use them as a template.

Scroll your eyes?
;)
Well, if you sit less than 1 meter away from the screen, maybe.
But if you go into a cinema, you don't sit in the first row either, do you?

100%? Lucky person.
I bought a 128MB RAM bar for 220 DM about 3 months ago. Now they are listed at 660 DM (2 days ago).
1 US$ = about DM 1.8

...is never a good idea. Remember the Marty McFly lesson - don't mess with the past. Just say no. :-)
Ah, and who gets to decide?

Hmm, I should go to Sri Lanka. Meeting this guy is one of those great dreams every geek ought to have :)

Is there a detailed list of changes anywhere?
;-)
And.. "Pentium III optimized" - please nobody start the serial id war again, thanks.
I hope the guy is right on some of his other ideas, too. Hey Rob - Can we do an "Ask Arthur C. Clarke anything" thingie, please?
(The man IS still alive, isn't he? He must be what, ancient by now?)
Well he does have the spare cash to be generous.
I think most of the major distributions include several gpl'ed games. You can bet that they will also include DOOM, now - Afterall after so many years, it'll still have some marketing pull.
Nemesis' gravity would not pull the probes towards the sun.
