    Not sure about how it is now, but didn't mozilla have problems attracting developers in the beginning? Basically it was a too big piece of code to swallow for most developers, especially if you hadn't been involved from the start....

    Hope it's better now, at least it *looks* damn much better (the status of the browser - that is...)!

    Well, IMHO Perl is more scalable in the way that it is a more full fledged language. So I would use it for more complicated web applications, but when it comes to just formatting data from a database then PHP do the job more than well...

    you got rather good eyes, don't you? Bet you a fiver you wont see a thing.... Tell, you what, jupiter looks like a star from earth, even in binocular, it still looks like a star, and europa is _rilly, rilly_ tiny compared to Jupiter

    Would probably do it leaving relay transmitters on the way, so at the top there will be a bit transmitter for contact with earth and then several small ones that will be frozen into the ice. This would mean that the probe would have to shut down the heat generating source at selected points, release the probe and then wait for it all to freeze again around it. When the water is frozen (with the transmitter) above it, it can then start melting the ice underneath it again.
    Not my idea, read about it in a book called 'Dust' (iirc) by Pellegrino

    However, From what I heard, there are a fair amount of software for linux that assumes the lower security setting. Quite a few userspace apps are also supposed to contain rather silly bugs like buffer overflow, which would make it a more insecure. Basically Linux doesn't have security as it's highest priority.

    Disclaimer: I'm probably not the one to speak about this issue, slap me if I'm wrong!

    ...you don't NEED a radio to drive a car. What you DO need though is blinkers, headlights, steering wheel, brakes, etc, etc. THAT'S what makes up an OS (well not headlights really, blinken lights perhaps). An OS is what is NEEDED to be able to run the system, IMHO!

    while I fully agree with your argument regarding using the right OS for the job. I must say that I don't agree that the defionition of an OS has changed.
    An OS is underlying foundation for the rest of the apps running on top of it. it provides services, handles resources, filesystem, scheduling, etc, etc.

    An app is still just an app, even if marketing says it's a major part of the OS. it uses the OS to operate. Of course, all OSes comes with quite a few extra apps with the OS and after a while people starts to see them as 'part of the os', which isn't really true, it's just bundled apps and utilities. Hell, not even ls is part of the Unix OS, it's just a simple executable!

    Hmmm, maybe there should be a way of viewing how much people been tipping. So that everybody could see that john Doe just tipped 1 quid while been downloading 2 TB, a little bit of 'Name and Shame' (rather popular here in the UK for the mo ;-)

    Hmmm, read something in Dr Dobbs about using Multicast for filesharing. It was an articel written by some MS employees (!). Very nice and save a rather big amount of bandwidth as well. That would solve Mojo Nation's problems since all those 300 users would read the same little chunk

    You can get ADSL in London and some other areas in the UK from BT from £40 a month.
    There's some installation charge as well (around £100 somthing)

    Well, most of us don't pay really...
    One good thing about it though is that there can be more 'niche' programs than the private channel that always goes for maximum profits. Sure there should be a way of saying, I don't wanna pay for BCC1, 2 and then they would cut your signal, whatever, suppose that will be possible with digital TV whenever it comes around
