  1. Re:Sounds familiar on Fully Endowed FW Olin College of Engineering Opens · · Score: 1
Being a current student of Harvey Mudd, I can tell you that at least around here the word is the Olin Foundation picked up and started their own college after a scuffle here, in part because they have enough money to just go do their own thing.

That's all fine and dandy, but now they're stealing away our department chairs (We miss you, Prof. Moody!) and faculty by giving them an offer they can't refuse. I think they can model the academic perspective of Mudd without a problem; what will be interesting to see is if they can get the same social atmosphere that encourages group learning, >95% of students living on-campus, etc.

  2. Solar power and MRTG on Wireless Internet In An Off-Grid House · · Score: 1

At my college, we've installed some solar panels on the roof of a dorm to see if it's worth expanding the project to use even more solar. (We have a lot of flat roofs, and in Southern California, that means pretty good solar energy.)

Anyways, we have a website showing the power generated, using the multi-purpose MRTG. It's all running via some student and staff-built hardware, running the OpenVMS port of MRTG by one of the computing and information services gurus.

  3. Re:Sun's transitioning on Solaris 9: Sticker Shock · · Score: 1

Indeed, I attended a Solaris 9 technical breifing yesterday at Sun, and they said in the future they'd like to sell service by the resource - they pick the hardware to match. If they provide you with too much big iron, their costs go up. If they provide you with too little, they lose the contract.

This is where they're moving; Solaris is Sun's baby and the hardware is just the means to an end for them.

  4. Re:Wireless power usage on Which Laptop To Buy? · · Score: 1

I've got an Inspiron 4000 with built-in 802.11b wireless, with the ability to turn off the wireless or enable a power-saving mode. Usually I don't bother, however, because I can get 4 hours on a battery with it, and only about 4.5 without. Plop in a second battery, and 8 hours is plenty of work time.

The key thing to remember, of course, is that if your card has a power-saving mode, enable it unless you really need the speed/range/interference.

  5. So you want to report a portscan - WHO to contact? on What's Wrong With Port Scanning? · · Score: 2

I've been portscanned numerous times on a cable modem connection - but in tracing the IP back to the ISP, I often find their AUP/TOS doesn't have a contact email for reporting such abuse.

What does everyone use to reach a responsible human being at the portscanner's ISP? Is postmaster@isp.com acceptable in a case like this?

  6. Re:Drivers for Creative Labs Dxr3 kit for Windows on Windows NT and DVD Decoders? · · Score: 1

Creative's driver page says the Dxr3 drivers just added "Support for single processor x86 Windows NT4.0 (English language)." Looks like your multiprocessor system could be the culprit.

I've been running the dxr3 card under NT with no problems whatsoever for the past few months... I have a SB Live! Value, TNT2, and Encore Dxr3.

  7. Microsoft Natural Original on Ask Slashdot:Ergo Keyboards · · Score: 1

Microsoft actually sent me a Natural keyboard just as the new elite models were being released. Clearing inventory, I guess. It took a few days to get used to, but I just LOVE the thing.

Biggest drawback: with the front raised (you'll want to do this to save your wrists in almost all cases) the keyboard is over 3 inches tall. That means it won't fit in most keyboard drawers. If you have the skill to build your own keyboard drawer or the money to have someone else do it for you, there's really nothing to complain about it.
