You certainly could set it up as a firewall/VPN/router device with only one NIC. It wouldn't be ideal, but it's a total hack job to make anything with it.

The only one's I've seen are just screwed in on the line. They can be hard to remove if they're outside and the nut and treads are exposed to weather, but it's doable. Cutting and splicing only takes 2 minutes anyway.

Digital TV, which we have here in Manhattan, makes descrambling even harder. I wonder if they'll ever be able to black box it effectively.

Yeah, I find it kind of annoying, but it is fun to see small scenes that were missing from the original. Fun fact is that David Lynch refused to have his name associated with this verision so the director is listed as the ubiquitous Alan Smithee. If you're die hard and have to have it, there are people on Ebay selling edited (minus the commercials) copies.

If you get whacked for not reading the fine print, you're an idiot. Period. It's your buck and if you choose to be careless with it, don't whine about it when the bill comes.

Those dialers get a bad rap, but the one's I've seen clearly anounce the fact that you're dialing a toll number and paying for access with a telephone call instead of a check or credit card. Seems like a viable alternative to people that don't have credit cards to me. It also seems like a viable alternative for online merchants who get shafted everyday by the credit card company's oligopoly.

  6. Re:Strategy on Corel-Microsoft Deal Means Potential .NET for Linux · · Score: 1

It all comes down to how the economics of this pan out. IMO, .NET sounds like a great enviroment to work in (excluding the fact that MS always screws up a great idea.) Common VM and libraries that can be used from basically any OO language. What a dream.

On the surface, this constant should exist whether you're developing server or client software. The nature of a VM is cross platform compatibility. It makes sense to me that you can make more money licensing and selling .NET software to user of every platform than you can make selling a proprietary system and supporting software from it.

It also helps their monopoly case alot since they are enabling other platforms to compete for users of their software. You're simply moving the Microsoft tax from being on each PC sold to each program developed. That's smart since it completely dismantles the goverments original case.

AND, it it ever makes sense for them to start relying on the OS again, they can simply start creating .NET peices that require Windows 2005 or whatever. If things go as the could, you have this multi-platform dev base that then becomes tied to following up their software on a Windows based system if they want to continue using the newest features.

    It's a win-win situation for them.

Who care's if it is "per-cpu identifiable"? Your computer already has expoitable serial numbers all over from software to hardware MAC addresses. Ever try to run quake3 twice on the same LAN, or photoshop or any other heavily pirated program? I do wonder how useful these numbers are however. No browser or software I know of sends local hardware serial numbers to a remote host. And even if they started, it would be relatively simple to remove or forge that infomation at before it left you computer or the network.

Does anyone know how this CPUID command works on SMP machines? I would assume it return the ID of the CPU in slot 1.

It's simply rediculous that it's not that easy. Unfortunately, you need to track down the complaints number for your phone comapny, PAY for a call trace, and as if that's not enough, file a police report to actually get any info about the caller. At this stage, who doesn't have Caller ID? Who isn't pissed off with endless calls from telemarketers selling credit cards, phone service, and political messages? Why isn't there a mandate that solicitive calls don't have to require special caller ID info? I mean, this is just spam after all. Far more intrusive than an email in my opinion, just not as cost effective so only big evil corporations can afford it usually. These are the questions I ask myself every damn day when I answer these calls. If it wasn't so incredibly profitable for the LD companies, this would have been made illegal long ago.

I only hear the Stevie P stuff on the main menu. When I actually play the game I get some kickin indie rock songs. One by Elf Power, one by some chick band I have, don't know the rest. I've found no mention of what songs they are on the web site. Does anyone know the name or artist of the one that goes "Just go away and leave me alone, and don't fucking call me on the telephone... I'll be happy when you're gone" Damn good song, but I have no idea who it is. Any pointers here would be appreciated...

Sounds like a Globix employee with the standard "Kill Exodus!" attitude. It's rampent there. I used to work in Professional services there myself and am currently a customer. I honestly find their service to be quite good. The data centers are top notch (except for the crappy terminal consoles) and the service staff is responsive. The PS dept has a real team attitude and there alot of knowledge sharing. I've seem them have occasional outages, but from experience, you'll have that issue everywhere. As for mentioned bandwidth issues, whatever. I don't think you'll have any issues maxing out your 100Mb handoff.
