Just done a tracerout from Italy to Canada:

    7 canet.ca.ten-155.net (212.1.196.174) 156.944 ms 192.211 ms 183.248 ms

You're connected via TEN-155 - this is transit for EU R&D networks - (actually EU + Cyprus & Israel)

The catch for you is that the only Canadian network to peer wth TEN-155 is CANARIE (the canadian R&D network)
So unlness you can get a CANARIE member to sell you maple sugar you will still have a problem ... ;-)

X-BTW: Another problem is that the current ATM VC between TEN-155 & Canarie is approaching saturation - so any added traffic will not fit through easily ;-(

P.S. it-uk.uk.ten-155.net is an ATM sub-if on uk.ten-155.net ( which I used for the traceroutes - and no the router isn't publically accesible )

It seems Sun can do these thing - so they can't be that hard -
(didn't SGI have a rather big lead on sun with SMP ??)

On the sun "starfire" (E10000) CPU boards( with up to 4 CPU's) can be hot-swapped
(after migrating the procceses running on them of course ...)

Also AFAIK CPU(system boards) can be added to the System (with no reboot)
As well as moving CPU boards between domains ( again: with no reboot)

Of course the E10000 has no NUMA & tops out at 64 Processors

BTW You may find it interesting that sun is claiming the E10000 replacment(using UltraSparc III) will have NUMA & scale to 1000 processors
You may also have noticed that a lot of this functionality (except domains) has been "downported" to the E[3456]500 models
