  1. Where, Pray tell, is the Source? on IRC Improvements · · Score: 2

Encrypted IRC is something I've been thinking about for a long time, and have been waiting for someone to do just such a thing.

Now it's out, I hungrily go to their page, desperately seeking the sources, and find, lo and behold, them to be nonexistant.

Unstable code or not, the power behind IRC is the fact that if you don't like the way the community is looking, you can always find make your own. I've seen proprietary IRC networks try to strive and fail miserably.

Suidnet guys, I think this is a beautiful project, and I am completely interested in how it's progressing... but I'm a bit disappointed that it's not open.

I congratulate your effort, as you've done something that has been desperately needed for years...

But until anyone can set up their own encrypted IRC server, it's just another AnotherNet.

Quarterdeck Chat? TalkCity? Those are other stories....

  2. Dvorak keyboards help, but aren't for everyone. on Keyboards - Dvorak or Qwerty? · · Score: 1

I learned how to use a dvorak keyboard out of boredom about two years ago. Almost all modern operating systems have hooks in place to use a software dvorak layout (so you can use a standard qwerty keyboard).

Affix a little post-it note to the side of your monitor with the keyboard layout so you don't have to waste any valuable screen real-estate on a graphical map. You can paste some keytops onto your keyboard, but IMHO there's no real point. The keys are supposed to be under your fingers, and well out of sight.

If you ask anyone who's used qwerty, then dvorak... they'll tell you its like riding a bicycle. You never forget qwerty, so you really don't have to worry about that. You may get rusty with time, however.... I generally use dvorak in linux (where I spend most of my time) and type qwerty in WinFro.

loadkeys can change your console keyboard layout, and setxkbmap can change your x11 keyboard layout.

I typo (hehe) at approximately the same speed in both qwerty and dvorak, but I can type much more comfortably and longer with a dvorak keyboard. I read somewhere that about 70% of your keystrokes are on the home row(pretty good cache hit ratio for you asm programmers). I havn't tried anything statistical, but it feels pretty close to the truth.

for more information, check out Dvorak International.

  3. Beautiful paragraph on The Road To Linux -- The Summit, but not the Peak · · Score: 1

Yeah. JohnKatz' writing brought a tear to my eye, actually. It's nice to see that there are some people in this world who are taking the plunge into the good stuff. In my dorm, everyone here who claims to be a computer expert, just keeps spouting off about how they know how to do such and such in Office.

It's real nice to see that there are people making an effort to break away from this commercialism and learn what computers are really about: Making them do what you want them to... not someone else deciding what they want you to do with them.
