In Canada, if you're not looking you're not unemployed. You're no longer part of the labour force. If you're flipping burgers, you're employed. However, there are two factors that do increase unemployment stats in Canada vs. the US: 1) [un]Employment Insurance benefits last almost a year and can be pretty generous relative to US benefits. I know a lot of people don't start really looking for work until the last month or so. 2) A huge proportion of the male working-age populace is in prison relative to Canada. This apparently accounts for about 1% of the difference in rates (in favour of the US)
the "kernel tainted" message is as helpful to average users as the warning Windows used to give about not running MS-DOS was. It says to the unsophisticated user that this is an error. It's not - it's someone trying to push their ideology or gain market share.
