I agree with FridayBob as well, but I am not sure Afghans are not "seeing the value in democracy" as much as it's just worthless to them. It won't put food on the table or keep harmonious relations with in-laws, so what good is it? Countries ruled by religious fruitcakes or corporate interests are not all that different...the people are always getting screwed. Personally, I prefer the No Government, No Anything type of rule that Nepal is experiencing these days. You don't have much money, enough electricity or water, and no sidewalks but you have freedom, which I once was taught was the endgame of democracy...more freedoms. Now am I not so sure after living through several democracies and a few non-democracies. They all look the same from here:)
| Why would you expect that though?
Nothing deep. That's all I have ever paid for anything in the iTunes store..99 cent songs and.99 cent apps. As an author I agree with you 100% that writers should get paid more, but I just don't think it's gunna happen in these economic times. However, I think the argument has been made well (here) that 14.99 for an iBook is just too much. If an author can sell more / make more at 1.99, then they should do that. I'd certainly pay that much for a book that I might be interested in...but no way am I going to ever pay over that for an ebook.
[Note: I balked at getting paid a penny a click a few years back, but now I see the light; I am getting compensated much better (for articles published on the web) then under the old publishing model of pay-once-per-article. Perhaps there is a comparison?]
Cheers!
oh crap, just yesterday i upgraded to 4.2.1 on my jailbroken 3G. Does anyone know if I have to wait until the boys at Dev-Team post a new tut on iClarified before I can upgrade again? I had so much fun (sic) the last time, I can't wait to do it again. thx...
I agreed with you RE: what it's all going to come down to up to the point where you mentioned "seal of approval from a publisher." I don't think the brave new world gives a hoot about any of those guys. A respected reviewer will have more weight then any publisher in the next wave...
Funny, I just installed the iBooks app today and expected all the prices to be $.99. I was surprised to see total crap for the list price of a good paperback - what a rip I thought, and downloaded some free Isaac Asimov and Agatha Christie. So not disappointed really...
On another note, just to install iBooks I had to take a 3G and run redsn0w what seemed like 20 times on two computers over two hours before I got onto iOS 4.2.1 from 3.1.2. What a total joke. If they made opening a paperback book back in 1935 that hard, they would have never sold more then a few hundred.
Well if Umberto Eco argued the case then the verdict must be yes, Apple is the next evil empire, whatever that means. But I love the infusion of religion into global capitalism, and looking at major corps as the new world overlords makes sense to me. Just version 2 of Emperors, Kings, etc. that now make all the decisions for thier subjects. I feel that way after buying into Apple a few years back for my home office. My office now looks like a showroom for apple products: iMac, Macbook Pro, Macbook, iphone, ipod, and all the accessories. That's pretty strange when you think about it, a bit. But like the docile artisan of 1440, I don't think about it much but instead just keep turning that screw and pumping out product...
They should all have both I suppose, but not so bothered about ExpressCard, as the only use I found for that was for an Esata card in older 15" macbookpros, which was making external drives faster. But that's been solved with the new interface, so...eh. On the SD slot, I can't see how a USB SD adapter could be more powerful, only less. It's certainly more of pain, having to remember to carry it and all.
We run a small A/V studio in Nepal using cheap iMacs and macbookpros (no mac pro here) and we do fine, albiet things are pretty slow. But with this new announcement, we are delighted, as instead of biting the bigger bullet of a new macpro, we will probably get some of these. The only thing that bothered me about the new line is that the 17" does not have the SDXC card slot, but instead has the old ExpressCard/34 slot - wtf? So we will be getting 15"ers instead...
I hate it when people use that stat, less then $x a day. It's meaningless, and I can tell you from experience that living in a country where the populace makes less then 2$ a day is meaningless. Like in Nepal, young educated folks find ways to use the internet, even if dirt poor by American standards.
Right on dude, we want to also be able to vote for all elected officials via "web 2.0+" and hold politicians accountable over the internet, from our mom's basements.
I know. I use Vuze, which invariably points to a torrent on Demonoid, and have never (ever) downloaded a fake. Perhaps this is just anti-sharing propaganda. Regardless, I am happy with the way things are.
ps.Please let the puppies go (www.animalnepal.org)
Chinese users don't download updates from MS because they don't want to waste precious internet time... we don't have unlimited high-bandwidth that's near free here. Bandwidth is spent on more important things, like the latest cracks and more western movies and TV episodes.
Exactly. From what I remember about America, is that driving is not just getting from point A to point B. It's about the journey in many cases. Even taking a different route home from work to see the sights was a freedom greatly enjoyed in your own vehicle. And doing that on a two-wheeler was even better. For longer journeys, like cross country, the adventure was taking Route 66 bits instead of the interstate, or diverting to see the World's Biggest Ball of String was something that made long drives fun. Even in the EU, puttering around France and stopping for lunch in a farmtown cafe (with yummy table wine), for example, sounds so much more interesting then participating in an Autobahn cartrain. When it gets down to it, this sounds like another personal freedom take-away on the way to becoming just a cog on a wheel instead of being human.
I suppose, but haven't drupal devs already figured all this out? All the modules that I have put into a drupal site have a v6 production version, and a v7 development version out for testing. I guess I don't get the description here: "These APIs have changed with Drupal version 7, and thus Drupal coders could benefit from a book that explains how to create Drupal 7 contrib modules." Most already have!
>>Have you ever seen a secretary or someone who only knows word processors try to update a website?
Yes, lots of them for the drupal sites that I develop. The cons u noted are just misleading. There is a drupal module that handles image aspect ratio, and the other "nightmare" adjustments you mention without the end user ever having to worry about any of that. As for editing content in a browser window, well, welcome to 2010.
I think you raise the point most missed. I was a journalist as well - now a paid blogger (which is one more step in the dark direction) - and while I am not shaking in my boots over this, I do agree folks should be alarmed. But they should have been alarmed all along, as access to raw information has always been hard to get, and finding out the truth of any matter is like pulling teeth from our elected officials. For me, wikileaks is like a breath of fresh air and I enjoy each and every release just as a fish on land would enjoy a splash of cold water across its gills.
>>>Use an external one connected via USB.
Yes, we already do, after at least 4 superdrive failures per year in this almost all apple shop. The MATSHITA UJ-875's just don't perform in dusty environments, so all our macs now are deployed with a cheap USB external writer. An annoyance, and the one black mark on an otherwise clean aluminum score sheet. I doubt firewire will go away next year, so bring on Lightpeak. How could firewire go away when some very important hardware devices depend on it being there (tape cameras, sound cards, etc)? But it looks like USB3 may never make it to the mac, which may not be a good thing...
This is silly, if I type acne vs acne, i get the same exact results list. There are no google-biased links at the top. But there are almost 1 million more hits for acne then when Edelman created the posted screen captures...that's telling.
No, there are no American Piracy Cops raiding shops in China, or anywhere else in Asia that I have been. In Nepal, it's 100% legal to sell copies of software, movies, etc. unless that IP is owned by a Nepali. Then you can get in trouble. I have noticed they are cracking down in places like Bangkok (where it is illegal kind of), but only if you are openly selling kiddie porn along with Windows 7. It's a big planet out there, and I doubt these decisions by the Senate will impact the rest of us in the "under developed" world, unless Demonoid is somehow shutdown completely.
Seems like this should already be so! Is this to say that an ISP can tell what devices are hooked to a home router today? That just seems plain wrong.
yesterday's dollar is today's penny...as my dad would say.
Everyone install SBSettings and with one swipe press the Airplane icon during preflight. Done.

I agree, disturbing this is. Especially so when said research is funded by layman's tax dollars.

Resistance is futile. It was true back then, and still true today.
