Are you sure about that? Everything I have read has stated that, while clock rates have plateaued, CPU performance increases pretty well every revision. Just because the new CPU has the same clock rate, doesn't mean that it is the same speed. I recently had to compare a HP Gen 7 server to Gen 8, only 2 years or so apart, same clock rates on the Xeons, but the newer one had literally twice the performance of the older system. Same number of cores, same clock rate, but the logic improvements doubled the performance for workloads.

This only mattered in our usage as these were for busy Exchange Hub servers, where they are CPU bound by the virus scan engine, so a double in performance is a double in the mail queue it can handle.

Could be worse... you could have no option of upgrading at all like many Apple devices, and be stuck with an old, buggy version.

Why do you seem to think this is an issue with just Android devices? The same issue applies to Apple devices as well, they just have more control over the device manufacturer, because they are the manufacturer.

Not to say this isn't an issue with Blackberry or MS, I just haven't looked into it with them at all as they are pretty irrelevant nowadays.

But Luxembourg is higher than the US...Yay us? The point was, we all need to work on it, not just talk about how much the US should do, as the US isn't the only high polluter. I was even surprised at how close Canada's levels were to the US. I consider per capita CO2 emissions the best measure, but others prefer the raw numbers. It all means there is work to do everywhere.

With more modern numbers, I would expect that Germany and Japan would be much higher as they pretty much turned off their nuclear plants due to Fukushima, which was the wrong thing for the environment.

I understand the feeling on the SiliconDust stuff, I used to have a triple tuner cable card unit from them (and a dual antenna one before that), but when MS dropped Media Center, I went out and bought a Tivo to do the same things I was doing on the computer. MCEBuddy works pretty well with Tivos too, the only thing is automating the retrieval from the Tivo, which can be done with other software. For some reason MCEBuddy is a little flakey with Tivo recordings, but when it works, it works really well.

The neat thing about Plex, is streaming across the internet. I can share my library with friends or family, or I can just watch it on my devices. I don't think Kodi can swing that, but if it can, all the better.

  9. good luck getting to the next star EVER.

Ever is a very long time. Consider this, we could have orbital colonies in a matter of 10 years with the political will. Space isn't difficult, it is a funding issue.

Imagine how much NASA could do if the entire military budget (or Welfare/SNAP/...) was dedicated to it?

Saying we will never do something, is the quickest way to be proven wrong on all points.

If you are concerned about the greenness of throwing out working hardware, consider the power usage of what you are looking at. 3 x 240 = 720 GB, but at three times the power usage of a 1 TB SSD, and likely not any better performance. Also, likely, they are already in an array, but are getting too constraining which is why the replacement in the first place.

I do agree though in handing the stuff down, if someone can use these drives as boot drives elsewhere, they are still useful, if the data isn't classified (where they shred the drives).
