It is good to see that Judges who are African-American (I hate that word...) can even see that Affirmative Action is racism. I had to explain this to a black coworker recently, and I don't think he understood even then. He thought it was perfectly fine that with less experience and training he was more likely to get a job then me, because I am a white male.
DS3 (T= telephone, DS = data service, this is a common mistake, and I even make it in normal speech) costs approximately $1700 a month for my office. If you are hitting terabytes a month, you should be paying for colo facilities, not running it from your house.
I would also add to your statement, that this used to be the case. In Win 7, and maybe Vista, there is a section of your user profile to emulate the system folders so that applications that would usually require administrator access can run as a user. The only applications I have seen that still require admin privileges are applications which auto update, and just plain software updates/installers.
Bullshit. There are just as many "Macs are shiny" by percent as there are idiots on Windows. I deal with them every day. Many of the people I work with who work on make believe the line from Apple that Macs don't have viruses, even when I point out to them that there are quite a few Trojans (43 as someone said earlier in this thread). People believe that because they use Mac, they are inherently safe, and this is quite false.
The below responder answered your question, but I wanted to address your concerns over buying Nvidia, as you are a bit off base there. In this case, a supplier used materials for the solder/insulators that were out of spec from what Nvidia asked for. This was not a defect that was introduced by Nvidia, but they are ultimately responsible. ATI has serious driver issues, and never seems to be able to fix them, Nvidia just works, until issues like this arrise and the card blows out. I have had Nvidia cards that took such abuse as being covered in water from my water cooling, and after drying off, they worked perfectly. I would not recommend judging them just based upon this issue that has since been fixed.
I can speak from experience in this matter. My "dead beat" ex wife didn't pay for over a year, I had to outlay $2000 on a lawyer and take her to court in order to get the state to look into it, and even then, I had to request that Child Support Enforcement start collecting from her wages. It isn't as easy as you might think, and it would have been even harder if I actually depended on the income she was supposed to be paying towards the kids. This all in Maryland, which is extremely rare for the father to be assigned custody by the state.
PS. I only say dead beat as that is what every non paying father is called, even if the non payment is due to hardship, he's a dead beat that chooses not to work...
But, in all seriousness, did Dell correct the problem? If so, what does it matter if it came defective in some odd way?
If you want to talk about quality from Dell, you shouldn't be talking about their shit consumer line, you need to look at the Precision or Latitude lines if you want quality. Also, WTF does a mouse have to do with a Dell Laptop's quality?
Virus scanners are pretty good at stopping "drive by" infections. These are so common now that even CNN had one a couple years ago.
There have also been Mac and Linux Trojan Horse viruses, so it isn't out of the norm to think about security by protecting these machines too.
I would recommend that you talk to your IT dept about getting a better AV though, McAfee and Norton are terrible and do cause the slowdown of any decent machine.
I would also add, the president is given the authority by the constitution to wage war for up to 90 days if he so chooses, at which time the hostilities have to stop, or congress must declare war. The president's title is "Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces" after all...
All the Blu-ray players I have seen have automatic sleep settings, they tend to go to sleep after 5 minutes or so on the menu screen, and if you pause it for more then 5 minutes or so, it will go to sleep as well. They also seem to auto-resume as a feature from where you were last, even if it isn't the last movie you played (watch half of movie A, watch movie B, put disk A back in, and it will resume).

I don't know what bases you have visited, but I still see MPs or solders, along with police guarding from outside the entrances.
One of the possibly penalties for treason while at war is the firing squad, it would not surprise me if someone got that penalty.
Even worse, he is wrong

Um...congress did declare war...
Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq
Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists
Or do you believe that an Authorization for the Use of Military Force isn't equivalent to a Declaration of War?
http://unity3d.com/unity/ ??
Unity what?
Well, then I look forward to you never posting again, as you seem to think Slashdot sucks so much, there is no reason for you to be here.
Raleigh NC prosecutor = stagnated you mean? Slashdot didn't pull this story out of their ass, it came from the prosecutor.
I can see someone being driven to murder the first time they lose a file system to Reiser (this used to happen, but I believe it has been fixed...)
If you hate Slashdot so much, leave. No one is forcing you to read your news or to post here.

or free programs without some background check
Damn, I better uninstall Linux then, I don't know where its been...

Stop buying Inspiron then...

Yes...but not by sweaty TSA agents...it usually requires dinner and involves an attractive woman...
I guess now HSA will have to bring back the normal level they just recently removed...
"If you're not doing anything wrong, why do you care if the police have a CCTV in your living room?"
That could be dangerous in Maryland...Sodomy, Fillatio and Adultery are all illegal, though it is only a $5 fine from what I understand.
I just grab the food or whatever and head back to my desk to eat while I read /. :)
I had a crash the other day, but yes, I agree, it is rare.
