It seems that their technobabble is just as crappy as ST's to me, but I'm more willing to give them a break for some reason. I guess because the writing is less centered around technology. For some reason its just easier to suspend disbelief with SG1.
Actually he just made a giant gemstone with the microwave, he built the stargate with parts he ordered online with her credit card(and Carter's toaster).
I think that a robot like this can be used more productively if it actually had some form of a weapon on it (chemical I guess) that it would spread to the insects.
Actually we already have that, we just use real cockroaches to deliver them. They call them transportable bait systems I think. Very effective.
So congratulations to the "green" consumers choosing their hydrogen - I mean coal - powered cars!
Absolutely. At least coal (which is far more abundant and cheaper than oil) can be burned to produce power in large power stations which are easier to keep efficent and clean (clean relative to the smog-plants we currently put in cars, it can still be pretty dirty stuff).
Now, would a commercial system end up being cleaner and more efficent than what we've already got? Good question. I know of only one way to find out for sure.
but can you prohibit your customer from distributing the GPL'd source? Or compiling their own binary and distributing that (along with source of course).
Could you modify GCC with non-standard extensions so that it would be very difficult or impossible to compile your GPL'd source? Since you don't link to or distribute your modifed compiler you dont' have to provide the source for it. Does the GPL specify that you have to provide compilable source?
Americans are still very emotional about 9/11, and will likely remain that way for years to come,
I wonder how many are like that because they think its expected? I, for one, feel very little emotional impact from that event. I still think we ought to do something to prevent it, but I'm sure not loosing any sleep over the loss of life.
Maybe I'm just pragmatic about it. People die all the time, many in much more painful and tragic circumstances, and this has been happening to perfectly good humans for at least 50,000 years. Drop in the bucket.
Of course, its also possible that I'm just a cold-hearted bastard with little empathy for my fellow man. I prefer to think of myself as rationally motivated.
Right or wrong, businesses as a organism is an interesting viewpoint.
I would expect businesses to evolve defenses against those actions that reduce their profits, within the constraints set by their environment (govenrment rules, aggragate morality of the actors who compose the business).
Specificly, I'd expect a business to require you to identify yourself when returning merchanidise, track your purchasing and returns behaviour, and penalize you with exorbitant restock fees or pro-rated return value.
We shouldn't have to, we should try to share the cost world-wide, with those who are able to taking a larger share.
No, I'm not a communist, I'm just realistic about the whole 'us' and 'them' attitude. We're all living on this planet together, and our economies are dependent on each other. When a region enters a phase of industrialization or a similar high growth phase, all 'global citizens' should act to minimize the negative environmental, economic and political aspects of the change, without stifling the change.
But I'm just a programmer with a very limited idea of how civilization and politics really works. Theres probably some rule somewhere that states that political boundaries make everybody within them somehow different and isolated from those without, such that they all like and dislike all the people inside other boundaries the same way, and that they can't _really_ work together toward the same end.
This is the only post so far that mentions firewire, so I'll attach my question here.
My HDDVR from Cox (one of the Motorola boxes) has DVI and FireWire outputs for HDTV channels. I don't know much about FireWire, but it seems like if this is available it shouldn't be that big of a problem to capture it to a computer for viewing (not just playback to a TV, for which applications are already available, according to a previous Slashdot story).
Cox already denies me the ability to use the DVR with PPV movies, so I'm mildly concerned about the broadcast flag. I'm hoping from some kind of FireWire-reading, broadcast-flag-ignoring PC-based DVR that I don't have to buy an expansion card for (I'd prefer to just use whatever cable box my provider supplies).
If I remember correctly the Earth's moon is being slowly boosted outwards/upwards in its orbit by bleeding off small amounts of Earth's rotational energy. Eventually it may leave Earth orbit.
Does the same effect apply to the bodies in Saturn's rings or other planetary moons?
My newsfeed comes up with "DS Pre-Orders Stopped as Sales Soar". No FA to R. Now I have to click through to slashdot to read the writeup, which still doesn't give me any idea WTF 'DS' is or why its so popular. So I have to load yet another site and go lookaround there (if its not slashdotted) to find more info.
Its stupid, the submitter could have saved me and probably thousands like me all that time and cumulative bandwidth and server load simply by adding a sentance or two to the writeup, which was too short anyway.
Why? I don't care about video games. I just get a headline in my news feed that says something about 'DS Pre-Orders'. At the very least it should be 'Nintendo DS', then I'd know it was about video games and I could ignore it.
I've never heard of the Nintendo DS before, and I don't care if I ever see one or know what games can be played on it.
You must be speaking of TOS warp. TNG warp is a bit harder to calculate. There is a graph in the manual though.
a 1'6" high test stand, approx., and a 7.084s fall time.
Not at an acceleration of 32.2ft/s/s you don't.
A drop from 1.5 feet ( 1'6" ) takes about 1/3rd of a second, with a terminal velocity of about 9f/s.
A 7.084s drop at 32.2f/s/s would be around 810 feet (disregarding atmospheric friction), with a terminal velocity of about 230f/s.
You would have to be on a small moon somewhere for a 1.5 foot fall to take 7.084 seconds, a moon with a surface gravity of about 1/16th that of Earth.
Also note that v=7f/s, not 7s.

+1 Sarcasm
On the chance that you are being serious, please don't tell the writers. At least get a Tivo-like device so you don't miss anything.
funny how they powered it with the alternators from a couple of 6-by's and various other sources later in the series.
Actually he just made a giant gemstone with the microwave, he built the stargate with parts he ordered online with her credit card(and Carter's toaster).
With any luck his ramscoop collection field will sweep through the leading ship, killing any inhabitants.
Is there an upper limit to the exaust velocity possible with an ion engine? Are these craft anywhere near that limit?
Ok with me, I hope they completely ban all salt from their diets.
(its funny, laugh)

Once people see how much they are actually paying for healthcare, maybe that will help to push the prices down.
Only if they are spending their own money on it, and their treatment decisions directly effect how much they pay.
Isn't there currently a movement to deny the minority party the ability to block using filibuster?

Oh please. When was the last time you saw advertising that accurately included all the details?

there are gonna be growing pains...
So why should the US pay for those growing pains?
We shouldn't have to, we should try to share the cost world-wide, with those who are able to taking a larger share.

Too many people forget that the object of life is not necessarily to live as long as possible.

you should also know what the DS is.
Why? I don't care about video games. I just get a headline in my news feed that says something about 'DS Pre-Orders'. At the very least it should be 'Nintendo DS', then I'd know it was about video games and I could ignore it.

Yes, I could look it up, but then why do we have article text? Lets just post some Google search terms instead.
Quit being stupid.
So whats a DS? Come on people, answer the 'W' questions in first paragraph of the article.
