  1. eBay Feedback? on Using the DMCA Against License Violations? · · Score: 4, Insightful

How about contacting the auction winners through eBay. Explain who you are and that the item they just purchased was freely available. Ask them to leave negative feedback for the seller. A few bad ratings could go a long way. Maybe set up a web page and have them link that URL in their feedback.

Or just leave the browser as Mozilla and name the mail and other utilities something else.

Now, why should UPS and FedEx get out of paying profit, gas, and employee taxes? Are they taxed more because they're shippers?

I don't think they're taxed more. I just think it's double taxation. If I have to pay sales tax on a shipment, plus the shipping fee (into which FedEx/UPS's taxes are built), I'm basically paying tax twice for the same thing. Not to mention the taxes I paid on my income in the first place.

Sometimes I think the patchwork US/state/local tax system is a deliberate attempt to confuse people into not knowing how much of their money really goes to taxes.

  12. Their first step on E-commerce Sites to Collect Sales Taxes Nationwide · · Score: 1

After reading the article, I didn't think this was too big a deal since it was basically requiring big retailers who set up their website as a separate 'organization' to charge sales taxes for states they were in. But now, I'm thinking that the agreement said they were going to charge for every state regardless of physical presence. That would begin the slipperly slope of getting online customers 'used' to paying sales tax.

I'm concerned that the big boys are going to work it out for themselves, and the little online shops (several of whom I develop websites for) will get screwed by having to pay for 'tax tables' or 'approved software' that will run us out of business.

Since the states will be getting sales taxes now, will they be willing to refund the taxes that UPS and FedEx pay (profit, gas, employee taxes, etc.)?

I didn't know about PubScience, but I have spent time trying to access USGS map data over the web. This data is a pain to find. The USGS has "business partners" who only make the data available for a fee. I generally have to track down the data state-by-state, from state-based agencies who make the data available for free (though they sometimes apply different licenses to the orignal USGS data), and some states aren't available.

In addition, I recently wanted to research the results of a class-action lawsuit on the U.S. Federal Courts website. It turns out that you can't do that easily. You have to register, wait 2 weeks for them to snail-mail you an access account, and if you look at too many pages (more than $10 worth), you get billed.

These agencies need a consistent data-distribution policy, and then with that, they'd be more immune to individual attacks by the SIIA and other deep-pocket lobby groups.

I'm also willing to be you'll find a tax-paying e-commerce company in every state in the country, and probably catalog companies as well.
