You don't have to be doing anything wrong, or to have incriminating data, in order to be very cautious about law enforcement in the US. It is often capricious, wrong, and damaging to innocent people.

  5. TFA covers this: apple gave the Uber app special privileges not available to other apps.

  6. Nobody became rich by working for free or on free software.

Lots of people don't have "get rich" as their goal.

  7. Feature phones, or landlines.

  8. Because have permission to and actually doing it are two different things.

True, but from a security point of view, you must assume that if an app has permission to do something, it is doing it.

  9. Anyhow, we don't know Apple's side of the story yet. Knowing Uber, they probably used "social engineering" to sneak stuff past the Apple iGuards.

TFA contains a statement from Apple explaining that they intentionally granted this ability to to Uber app, and why.

  10. Again, I'm giving Uber the benefit of the doubt for rhetorical purposes (I actually think that Uber is essentially a criminal organization who needs to be put out of business, but I'm setting that aside for the moment).

Uber didn't say they put this in for no reason. The reason that they gave for implementing this is entirely plausible and, if that's all it was ever used for, hard to take exception with.

Privacy and security are related. Privacy is a subset of security.

  12. There's an old truism when it comes to security: the moment that you feel secure is the moment when you are the most vulnerable.

No defense is impenetrable, and if you feel that yours are, it's very easy to overlook red flags that you've been penetrated.

  13. It's sortof impressive how many times Uber apps have been found to contain questionable abilities that Uber claims they stopped using some time ago.

For the sake of argument, let's assume that they are being truthful when they say these things. My response is: get your engineering house in order.

Leaving dead code in your software is a terrible practice for a number of reasons. Don't wait until someone discover it's there before you remove it. Remove it as soon as you stop using it.

Just kidding! I actually do the same thing when it comes to DVDs, for slightly different reasons: by ripping the DVD, I don't have to worry about unskippable crap, menus, etc. I can just play the movie without any hassle.

Time shifting wouldn't apply, since you can time-shift a DVD without copying it simply by playing the original when you want to watch it.

Also, you also have to treat the original DVD as a single unit with all the copies, so if you send the DVD back to Netflix, you either have to delete the copies or send them back with the original.

  16. Almost certainly not. In the early days, Netflix was just buying retail DVDs to rent out, but the studios were pissed off about that. I suspect that Netflix started buying the special pressings that the studios make for rental purposes in order to calm them down.

Is this what Netflix wants, or what the content owners demand?

Content owners demand DRM and Netflix has been going along with that demand for years -- I actually don't have an issue with that.

Netflix (and Google and Microsoft), not the content owners, wanted EME specifically. I have a huge problem with that, and won't forgive any of them for pushing it through.

I have no idea if a relevant clip exists on YouTube or not, and I see no reason to spend a bunch of time looking for it when it's no more difficult for people who care to do the search themselves. This just isn't that important.
