The following week Vermont Yankee officials were accused of misleading state regulators and lawmakers by saying the plant did not have the type of underground pipes that could carry tritium.

Actually, I don't think they were misleading the regulators... It appears that they didn't have pipes that could carry the tritium. If only we could figure out why they were there in the first place.

I'm sure someone will find a way to make it work. We all know how effective DRM is, and how hard it is to break. I doubt that this will be met with much resistance due to the fact that component only give you 1080i, and HDMI delivers 1080p. But I do find it annoying that someone's telling the market they have to "stop doing something" even though there's really no need to...

Well, unless you have an HD TV that doesn't have HDMI. If I did, and my system conked out, and I was faced with a choice of buying a new TV or not having HD TV, I'd be pissed.

The City of Detroit levies a 1.5% tax on people who work in the city. Residents pay 1.5%, but you get a vote. If you live and work in Detroit, you pay a total of 3%.

Meaning: I work in Detroit, so I pay 1.5%. I am someone who pays a city tax from employment.

  5. Re:Tape on PA School Spied On Students Via School-Issued Laptop Webcams · · Score: 5, Insightful

Something that I think is worth pointing out from the first paragraph:

the laptops issued to high-school students in the well-heeled Philly suburb have webcams that can be covertly activated by the schools' administrators, who have used this facility to spy on students and even their families.

The elected officials are usually someone like the school board. The administrators are typically the people running the school itself... Namely... the people responsible are probably not directly elected. So, having the voter pay the bill at best punishes someone indirectly responsible. That's not at all like punishing voters for who they elect. This also means that the taxpayers who can't vote there are punished with no say.

In fact, using myself as an example: I work in Detroit, an elected official here was recently convicted for perjury, which resulted in $8.4 million in cost to the city taxpayer (which means I paid some of it). I didn't even get to vote against the guy because I live outside the city... Yet I have to help pay the bill. That's not even remotely right.

So... I disagree that the taxpayer *should* be held responsible... It just turns out that they end up being held when public figured get involved... And they probably will be in this case.

  6. Re:Tape on PA School Spied On Students Via School-Issued Laptop Webcams · · Score: 5, Insightful

A problem with that lawsuit is that the district would be using funds from the taxpayer... Which hardly punishes the right people. This was clearly a problem with the individuals who made and approved the asinine idea of spying on the kids at home. They're the ones who should be sued, and fired.

Why would a Wookiee -- an eight foot tall Wookiee -- want to live on Endor with a bunch of two foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense!

But more importantly, you have to ask yourself: what does that have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense!

Look at me, I'm a lawyer defending a major state, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca. Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense. None of this makes sense.

And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberating and conjugating the Emancipation Proclamation... does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense.

If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must deny climate change! The defense rests.

I will assume that you've spent your life in a place where public transit is readily available, which is great for you. In places like New York, Washington, DC, London, Paris, and many functioning cities, you're right. Having a car is not necessary and a luxury.

I work in Detroit. I do not live in Detroit... Because it's Detroit. I rely on my car because public transit has been noticeably absent in this region. I also do not live within walking distance of work because if I did, I could not find groceries... I'd have to drive out to the suburbs, or drive to the farmer's market on Saturday because there are no grocery stores, and the buses do not serve the farmer's market. Most of the useful places to purchase basic goods moved out of the city.

Going beyond the Detroit example: Farmers need fuel. Farmers feed you. And sometimes they don't grow what they need to be farmers... They need vehicles to get to the nearest town to fulfill the needs that arise from what they don't grow.

Simply stated: Your viewpoint is egocentric. It does not consider situations outside what you currently live.
