  1. Re:Different than a laptop? on Jumbo Dual-Screen "Kno" Tablet Debuts At D8 · · Score: 1

I see your point, but I think it very much depends on what you are studying. Laptops are utterly useless for note taking in some subjects due to the heavy reliance on diagrams and sketches. Think about how long it would take you to draw a rough P-V diagram for a Carnot cycle on a laptop vs a tablet.

Another advantage of the tablet is the noise -- imagine a whole lecture theater full of students typing away on keyboards. This is the reason why using laptops in lectures is a little frowned upon by many lecturers.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of all these touch screens in use these days -- I'd certainly never go near a cell phone or mp3 player without real buttons -- but I do think that this device could be quite useful, especially if it had roughly the same specs/capabilities as a netbook.

I really don't see how racism has any place in a reasonable government.

I like Opera, and it's the only browser that I use nowdays, but I'm not sure it's any lighter in terms of resource use than FF or IE. Currently, it's using ~350MB with 10 tabs open after being up for a week or so, but that's because I have a CFD simulation running which is sucking up about 3GB. If there is a lot of RAM free, it will suck up quite a lot more. I don't mind this at all, RAM is there to be used, after all.

Agreed. In addition, I'd like to see an example of a mainstream piece of software that isn't becoming more 'bloated' as time goes by. It makes sense to give users more features and capability as hardware specs improve. Why would your average user want a browser that has limited functionality but only uses 10MB of RAM when they have a machine with 4GB that they only use to browse the web?

I'm using Opera at the moment on my office PC -- it's using ~350MB of RAM and I simply don't care. It could twice that and I still wouldn't care. For those that do, there will always be less mainstream options out there that are much more lightweight at the expense of some functionality.

  16. You could apply the same logic to cruise ships etc... It doesn't apply since customers simply wouldn't pay for an airline like seat for a multi day voyage... Zeppelins would never be a direct competitor to jet aircraft because of the huge difference in speed (even taking into account my original postulation that significantly faster zeppelins are possible, they're not going to be going 800km/h!).

  17. Personally, with the deadly safety record of aeroplane travel (Western Air Express Flight 7, Northwest Airlines Flight 2, Eastern Air Lines Flight 21....) and sea travel (RMS Titanic, RMS Empress of Ireland, Cospatrick....), I think I'd rather just swim.

  18. True, but it's not physically impossible to make a faster zeppelin that could fly into head winds at a reasonable rate.... The same with getting them through storms safely -- there is no reason why it couldn't be done. I'd certainly be keen to spend a few days traveling in class in a zeppelin over a few hours in a cramped plane.

  19. Sonic booms smashing windows is an event mainly confined to the movies. It is possible for it to happen, but the craft would need to be flying insanely low -- Which is obviously illegal for a number of other reasons.

Vigilante justice can't be allowed in any case, since your average person isn't qualified (or impartial enough) to make a rational judgment of guilt and appropriate punishment.
