Do you think, just maybe, there is a bug in the CVS code??

No, that can't ever happen. It has to be AOL's fault.....

This would be extremely helpful to me. My roomate refuses to change over and use Linux full time becouse of her friends on AOL and the ease of use that the point and click interface provides. I'll be more than happy to set up a linux box for her running this.

Well Craw, I guess I will respond to you on each point.

    1. Rob should be able to respond as he see's fit. I am not knocking you for your opinion, but if he can write the story, he can defend it if he wishes.

    2. Thanks for agreeing with me on the update thing:)

    3. Slashdot should not be in the business of creating the news. Previous to the purchase by Andover, /. was basicly a clearing house for interesting stories that were found on the net. On some occasions the boys would break a story, after having some facts about it, not just the person complaining. If this is going to be the future of slashdot, I may write to complain that I was told by yyy.com that Brand X distro is being used on a ship on an expedition to club baby seals. I mean, it has to be true if I got an email from a third party and sent it to slashdot as a statement from Brand X, right?

  7. Re:you changed the story on Red Hat Tightening Trademarks? · · Score: 1

You openly said that you changed the story in a reply 2 down from a post in the discussions. This type of thing should be done either at the tail end of the original article (i.e. update: ten minutes after I wrote that I have confirmed this with two others, now I am not so sure) or create a retraction page for slashdot writers that shoot off before getting the entire story. Making that kind of statement where you did is the same cheesy thing that newspapers do, printing thier retractions in the back pages where noone reads.

Now Rob, I do appoligize for the tone of my first post in this thread, and somewhat for the tone of the above paragraph. I have met you and think that you are a great guy, but I am sick of this kind of thing. It seems that too often people embrace the Linux is free and noone should be able to make money off of it in any way. You got hold of this story, from the person complaining. You post it up with a comment that you have confirmed this with two other people. Readers start commenting like crazy and now you don't seem to have any of that original confirmation that you claimed. If you hadn't jumped to try to be the first (slashdot, not you personally) site to have the story, you could have done a little more "legwork" on the story and had something more accurate. Now, I am going to have to second guess your stories as to thier accuracy.

In the time between writing my reply and refreshing the page you have changed the story Roblimo. What is the deal? If you make a change from a statement that you have confirmed this story through two people to what you have there now about the amazon spokeswoman and well known linux vendor off the record. Please have the nads to make a followup comment rather than erasing what you posted. you are supposed to be a journalist after all. Take some responsibility when you make a mistake. Duncan

So they protect thier trademark. Big deal. Let them do what they wish. If you don't like it, don't buy thier product or thier stock. Personally, I will continue to use thier distro, no matter the name, because I like how it works. If I have to purchase it under the name of "This is actually the $80 distro without the support from the company" I will do that for 1.99 from cheap bytes or get someone in the LUG to burn me a copy.

  11. Linux Rules on Is Red Hat becoming too powerful? · · Score: 1

This is what Linux users say. Most Linux users want it to take over the world. Well RedHat is helping to achive this goal. I would not be using Linux right now without RedHat. I had tried over the last few years several distros and discarded them due to difficulties, mainly with installing. Finally with RH I was able to install and use Linux.

Most people in my area recommended RH to me as that is what they used, and could help me with problems. This was the same reason that years ago I went with DOS/Windows on my first computer. I knew more people that used MS software than Apple. I am sure that when a better distro becomes avalible that will take over.

I think the problem is that the hardcore users belive in the GPL. This is not a bad thing, just a conflicting thing. RH is a corporation that is making money. They put out a good product that satisfies a demand for, of all things, free software.

Yes, they may become as big as MS someday. I wish them well on the trip there. The catch here is that most Linux users don't spend money on software. I am willing to buy one of thier boxed sets for one reason: a good product. Yeah, I can download it for free, go to Cheapbytes, or WC for less money. I buy the box set to support a company that I like and would like to see continue.

If you don't like RH for one reason or another, that is for you to decide. Use something else and convince your friends to use it.
