Sure they do. Your digital cable box will have A/V outputs, and the Tivo has A/V inputs. With a digital cable system the Tivo's own tuner wouldn't work, or at least wouldn't let you get all the channels.
I agree the Replay 4xxx series is overpriced, but the auto commercial skipping and computer connectivity is cool. Right now Tivo can't touch that except for an ethernet hack if I recall.
I have a Replay 3030. Love it. Got it cheap from a stupid net merchant. Got a backup of the HD so if the drive blows up I can renew the box. I intend to have this gadget for a loooooong time.

The Live! Value Edition doesn't have the SPDIF enabled. I have one in my main PC.
If I can find the 5.1 edition at the price you mentioned I won't have to bother with the Value Edition hack. Cool.

I built a jukebox out of a P200, FreeBSD, a SB AWE32 PCI and Webplay.
Webplay kicks ass. I can fire up the tunes from any PC in the house -- streaming, if I want to use headphones at a computer, or I can feed the audio into my stero... or both at the same time.
There are apparently hacks to enable a digital audio output port on the cheapo SoundBlaster Live! cards. Once I do this I can even have my nice Yamaha receiver do the D/A conversion for better sound quality. (yeah, MP3, I know, but I use high bitrates and they can sound pretty good to me at least.)
Once I get a bigger hard drive in the jukebox I'll be able to use it as the home's general-purpose file server too.
For me, a PC-based solution is better than a component-based solution. The web interface alone cinches it. I don't even miss the remote contol, though one can probably be hacked in there.

After finally seeing an Imax movie for the first time a few months ago normal movies are ruined for me. The 24 fps blurring has always been annoying, especially in long pans... but after seeing the rock-steady picture of a true Imax presentation, man, I am ruined! At least when you watch a DVD that artifact is masked somehow.
The movie industry really needs better image capture & display technology. Just 6fps more... please... but I'll happily take all I can get.

- There's an Elven army at the battle of Helm's Deep, which did NOT happen in the book, there were no Elven armies anywhere.
- Whatsername is cruising around with the Fellowship full time in the movie, isn't she? That was most certainly not the case in the book.
Most people will point and laugh and say it's my loss for not seeing the movie. I can live with that better than the aggravation of seeing things changed "just because." Cutting things, I can understand that... but most of the changes are probably mistakes.
Please, geeks, leave your computer, go to a theater, mix with fellow geeks and lovers and LOTR and watch this in a theater, 40 feet wide in Dolby, as it was meant to be seen.
Or, you could just stay home and start reading the book again and save yourself the heartache of seeing the movie goof up things you have imagined being a certain way for decades.
Who knows, you may even like meeting other people!

Um, I hate to tell you this, but all a high GPA means is that someone was able to remember what they read in the text book the night before the exam.
True for many subjects but not all of them. Math, for example. You can't memorize every permutation of every math problem; you have to learn a process.
Most topics in the sciences and engineering are the same way, in my experience. You can PASS a class like chemistry by memorizing rules, but to do really well you need to develop an intuition for the processes... you need comprehension, not just retention.
If this helps to raise a generation of people who are marginally competent on the computer it is money well spent. Maine's productivity will soar as future adults are not heard to say:
- How do I print?
- I don't know, one second I was typing and the next second my document was gone.
- where's the "any" key?
- Ooh! Someone emailed me a funny little elf animation!
- I'll just attach happyfunelf.exe along with 10MB of other files and forward them to everyone I know. These are ALL HILARIOUS!

The price is ridiculous. But consider what this thing has going for it over a bike: it takes no skill to ride. It's supposed to be stupid easy, that's the whole point... riding a motorcycle isn't brain surgery, but there's definitely a barrier to entry there -- and the safety issue, which is what keeps me off a bike.
I ditched @home for DSL on 9/30, spooked that they'd shut down port 80 on me -- I run essential services from home. They are still charging me for service though! When I called in shock and amazement, I was informed that it is actually POLICY to continue charging the end user for a few months after service is disconnected and the modem is returned. See, they can't close your account or some crap like that until they can get a van out to your place to fiddle around on the phone pole or wherever their hardware is. THEIR hardware. Once they fix that, they refund the charges.
It's the stupidest thing I have ever heard, but repeated calls have verified it as true. If I have to call checking on their progress any more I will be on a first-name basis with their billing staff.
I'm glad to see the bastards go under. (easy to say now that I am in Speakeasy DSL land though)
They sold me a CD containing data, and I'm using it.
That is the way I prefer to see things too, but it isn't the reality. In reality, you purchased a license to use some bits, and the bits happened to come on a CD, and you (theoretically) agreed to use the bits only in a certain way when you started using them at all.
I think that software licenses are crap, I much prefer an outright SALE, but that just isn't the way it is.
RoboCop is a great movie. It's easily Verhoeven's best, and it's one of the best future dystopia portrayals I am aware of. Relevant to today, it also shows us the corporate police state that we are coming to fear -- and it did it a long time ago. RoboCop himself is the strongest icon of the CPS imaginable; after Officer Murphy legally dies the company takes control of his body.
If you haven't seen the movie in a while, watch it again. It's famous for its blood & guts but it is also the deepest picture Verhoeven has ever made... knowingly or not.:)

Don't worry, once someone manages to copyright critical parts of the human genome you won't be able to have KIDS without buying a license. After all, you'd be duplicating copyrighted material without permission...
@Home allows you to network and do whatever you want w/your connection but also does offer IPs at 4.95/mo.
With @home it is hard to make blanket statements like that. Their service options vary by region, and they vary massively.
When I had @home in Los Angeles, extra IP addresses and extra MAILBOXES were unavailable at ANY PRICE. They simply could NOT do them... but in other parts of the country people could get static IPs, extra IPs, free mailboxes and other stuff.
It actually isn't illegal to split your cable TV line to multiple devices. I even found the FCC code on this for a similar post on avsforum.com but I am too lazy to do so again now.:)
Now that I am running Win2k and stability isn't as much of an issue, the focus-stealing behavior of Windows apps has shot back to Gripe #1.
(The TweakUI control panel has an option for "prevent apps from stealing focus" but it doesn't seem to work worth a damn.)
Maybe the WM could count the number of keystrokes made in the previous second or so to decide if it needs to fade in new dialogs before they take focus.
IMHO, nothing should ever steal the focus. Ever. I choose what I am doing at any particular time with the computer... for the computer to override that is aggravating in the extreme. "THIS IS THE VOICE OF WORLD CONTROL. YOU WILL COMMUNICATE WITH AIM NOW."
There's a taskbar for alerts and new windows to appear on, they can flash there to get your attention.

Um, I hate to tell you this, but all a high GPA means is that someone was able to remember what they read in the text book the night before the exam.
True for many subjects but not all of them. Math, for example. You can't memorize every permutation of every math problem; you have to learn a process.
Most topics in the sciences and engineering are the same way, in my experience. You can PASS a class like chemistry by memorizing rules, but to do really well you need to develop an intuition for the processes... you need comprehension, not just retention.
If this helps to raise a generation of people who are marginally competent on the computer it is money well spent. Maine's productivity will soar as future adults are not heard to say:
- How do I print?
- I don't know, one second I was typing and the next second my document was gone.
- where's the "any" key?
- Ooh! Someone emailed me a funny little elf animation!
- I'll just attach happyfunelf.exe along with 10MB of other files and forward them to everyone I know. These are ALL HILARIOUS!
- Why can't I print?
The price is ridiculous. But consider what this thing has going for it over a bike: it takes no skill to ride. It's supposed to be stupid easy, that's the whole point... riding a motorcycle isn't brain surgery, but there's definitely a barrier to entry there -- and the safety issue, which is what keeps me off a bike.
I ditched @home for DSL on 9/30, spooked that they'd shut down port 80 on me -- I run essential services from home. They are still charging me for service though! When I called in shock and amazement, I was informed that it is actually POLICY to continue charging the end user for a few months after service is disconnected and the modem is returned. See, they can't close your account or some crap like that until they can get a van out to your place to fiddle around on the phone pole or wherever their hardware is. THEIR hardware. Once they fix that, they refund the charges.
It's the stupidest thing I have ever heard, but repeated calls have verified it as true. If I have to call checking on their progress any more I will be on a first-name basis with their billing staff.
I'm glad to see the bastards go under. (easy to say now that I am in Speakeasy DSL land though)

That is the way I prefer to see things too, but it isn't the reality. In reality, you purchased a license to use some bits, and the bits happened to come on a CD, and you (theoretically) agreed to use the bits only in a certain way when you started using them at all.
I think that software licenses are crap, I much prefer an outright SALE, but that just isn't the way it is.
Slightly OT:
RoboCop is a great movie. It's easily Verhoeven's best, and it's one of the best future dystopia portrayals I am aware of. Relevant to today, it also shows us the corporate police state that we are coming to fear -- and it did it a long time ago. RoboCop himself is the strongest icon of the CPS imaginable; after Officer Murphy legally dies the company takes control of his body.
If you haven't seen the movie in a while, watch it again. It's famous for its blood & guts but it is also the deepest picture Verhoeven has ever made... knowingly or not.
Don't worry, once someone manages to copyright critical parts of the human genome you won't be able to have KIDS without buying a license. After all, you'd be duplicating copyrighted material without permission...

@Home allows you to network and do whatever you want w/your connection but also does offer IPs at 4.95/mo.
With @home it is hard to make blanket statements like that. Their service options vary by region, and they vary massively.
When I had @home in Los Angeles, extra IP addresses and extra MAILBOXES were unavailable at ANY PRICE. They simply could NOT do them... but in other parts of the country people could get static IPs, extra IPs, free mailboxes and other stuff.
It actually isn't illegal to split your cable TV line to multiple devices. I even found the FCC code on this for a similar post on avsforum.com but I am too lazy to do so again now.
It looks cool but there's not even a download link on that page.
Now that I am running Win2k and stability isn't as much of an issue, the focus-stealing behavior of Windows apps has shot back to Gripe #1.
(The TweakUI control panel has an option for "prevent apps from stealing focus" but it doesn't seem to work worth a damn.)
Maybe the WM could count the number of keystrokes made in the previous second or so to decide if it needs to fade in new dialogs before they take focus.
IMHO, nothing should ever steal the focus. Ever. I choose what I am doing at any particular time with the computer... for the computer to override that is aggravating in the extreme. "THIS IS THE VOICE OF WORLD CONTROL. YOU WILL COMMUNICATE WITH AIM NOW."
There's a taskbar for alerts and new windows to appear on, they can flash there to get your attention.
Of the shows current on, here are some of my ratings. All IMHO, of course.

Angel (I actually far prefer this to Buffy these days, it has a "quirkiness" that reminds me of Herc & Xena)

Good Eats (the cooking show that's so good it inspired me to learn to cook)
The Sopranos (on hiatus)
Six Feet Under (on hiatus)
Malcolm in the Middle
shows that I watch despite some pretty serious flaws, though I feel kind of dirty after a viewing
Enterprise
Alias (Sidney has terrible, terrible fieldcraft and most of the tech is totally silly, otherwise pretty neat)
X-Files (increasingly incomprehensible!)
shows I really wish I could learn to like
Farscape (Saw it twice: blue-girl got a cold, and a monster in a cheap-looking mine. Lame.)
shows that even prisoners of war should not be made to watch

Earth: Final Conflict
Dark Angel (She has cat DNA, so she goes into HEAT. That was the last of many straws.)
