Some good mobos have special settings to lock the PCI bus speed at 33MHz. Without such a feature, you are likely to run into problems, just like you did.
My Abit BH6 lets me boost my FSB speed to 100MHz (from 66MHz) while keeping the PCI bus at 33MHz. No stability problems.
Selecting the proper hardware is crucial. If you read up, it's possible to get some serious gains, save money, AND have a stable system.
You are not recognizing that some overclockers get a lot more than "2-5 percent" out of their systems. Look at all the people who got their Celeron 300A's running at 450MHz. That's a huge speed gain and a savings of hundreds of dollars. There are plenty of more current examples too.
Overclocking does have a place, and as long as there is any "slop" in processor speed ratings it always will.
Do you free software zealots regard music as software? I'm not just talking about Backstreet Boys MP3s, I'm talking about the source code -- the musical notation, the written representation of the tune itself. What about music that is written in digital code for electronic insutruments? Programming a rack of synths and effects boxen is not unlike writing an application.
It seems to me that if no one should be able to restrict the use of the application software they write, no one should be able to restrict the use of the music they write. They are closely related.
This is a serious question, not a troll. I want to know what you think. But I'll tell ya in advance I think that people DO have the right to restrict the use of things they create in certain ways. If you sell a program, I shouldn't be able to sell copies of it for less, or give them away. If you write or perform music, I should have to pay for it. If I write a book, you shouldn't be able to photocopy it and sell it for less.
(So am I an angel? Of course not, but I admit it.)
Human rights ARE more important than property rights, but there needs to be a balance. Saying that "that a proprietary software copyright holder should not have the right to tell you what you can (and can't) do with your copy" is just, well, WRONG. If you are stealing MS Word, just admit it instead of trying to change everyone's worldview to justify it.
Obviously, regenerative cartilage and neurons are not an evolutionary advantage.
That is poor reasoning. Just because a trait or ability hasn't developed doesn't mean that it isn't useful. It just hasn't HAPPENED. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. Evolution guarantees nothing.
There was a time before we developed intelligence, or the ability to walk upright. It would make no sense for an observer back then to look at us and say, "clearly intelligence is not useful, as these creatures have not evolved it."
We aren't DONE evolving, either. Maybe a few zillion years from now we will have the traits you are calling useless. And then, BOY, will YOU be changing your tune!:)
Some music is only available on CD singles, and not all music gets played on the radio. I like industrial music, and back when I was way into it CD singles were the best/only way to get some tracks.
When was the last time you heard Front 242 or Ministry played on the radio? It doesn't happen often.
If you are stuck on a modem, you should really forget about playing action games online.
Clearly you have never had your ass kicked by some punk with a much higher ping.:) But seriously, a good player can compensate for a lot. And back before I got high speed access, I played a lot of FPS games on the ol' 56k, and I usually did OK. Not that I ever want to go back...
Niven a pacifist? No way. A pacifist would never write stories with themes like, "but sometimes you just have to fight anyway." That is exactly the theme that is presented in the short story "The Warriors," where pacifist golden-age-of-no-violence humans first meet the Kzinti and STILL kick their furry asses.
I know, I know, I shouldn't feed the troll. But I hate to see someone slander Niven that way. Well, go ahead and slander his last few years of work, but the classic Known Space stuff is still some of the best SF ever, IMHO.
I would not doubt for a moment that your "real people" are the same sort of people that think anyone wearing a black t-shirt is a bad person...
You may not doubt it, but you can still be wrong. When I was in high school, I was the president of the Dungeons & Freaking Dragons Club. That's about as geeky and non-mainstream as you can get. And I wasn't shunned or punished for it. The teachers? hey were fine with it.
I am not saying that there aren't abuses within the system. I know a lot of "black T shirt kids" get the shaft today. But that's not a reason to damn all teachers, as you are. You're wrong, chum. They're not all bad, and there is no conspiracy. The bad teachers got that way by themselves, not through late-night school board meetings.
Pike didn't have the Space Tube to blow in. The chair moved by thought, which is a lot less theatrical. And since he could only beep, and not speak, he's a suboptimal leading man.
FIRST OFFICER: Captain! The alien swarm is about to overtake us... what should we do?
PIKE: BEEEEP
FIRST OFFICER: So, did you want us to remodulate the shields, or charge the hull with isolinear tachyon radiation?
PIKE: BEEEEEEEP
FIRST OFFICER: STOP YOUR INFERNAL BEEPING!!
PIKE: BEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEP
Besides, Pike was taken to Talos IV to live out a life of wonderful illusion anyway.
I just don't care for her character on TNG, and knowing how she got the part makes it that much worse. She rang the producers and said, "I want a part. Did I mention that I am Whoopi? Everyone loves me." It just rubs me the wrong way.
Besides that I always though the character was lame. The superintelligent survivor of a great civilization... is a bartender? And why does a ship like that have any civilian employees anyway? Blech.
Man, that would infuriate me. I can see her making you write an anti-flag-burning paper as an instructive exercise, but stating that it was all due to her personal politics is just WRONG.
You should go back to school, see if she is pulling the same stunts and talk to the principal. Or the school board. Those poor kids can't defend themselves, no one may know about this yet.
This is a ridiculous post. How did this get +5? Are all of you that anti-establishment? Think, dammit. Don't lash out because it's the easy thing to do.
Yes, schools teach kids these things. But consider the alternative. What kind of society would we have if kids were taught that they didn't have to do anything on a schedule, that they didn't have to be on time and organized, that they didn't have a place in a power structure, that they didn't have to respect authority?
What the hell is wrong with teaching kids to NOT be little shits? Or would you rather raise a generation of criminals because it's not cool to follow the rules? Juvenile crime is bad enough already, why promote it?
The fact is that rules make a society livable, and you have to teach people the rules at an early age. If you don't, you get a lot of punks who use violence to solve their problems.
If the poster has a kid, I encourage him to adopt a hands-off method of raising him and see what happens. I'll see his ass on COPS someday soon.
My parents are teachers. So are all their friends. I have been surrounded by teachers of jr. high school to high school level all my life, and I can tell you that they are people just like anyone else. There's no "government indoctrination" at the hands of these "government bureaucrats," because they are as diverse a population as mechanics, librarians, doctors or anyone else. Just because you work for the government doesn't mean you are brainwashed by them! Where's the brainwashing infrastructure, anyway? When are the meetings where teachers get Taught What To Say By The Feds? They answer to the principal, who answers to the school board, who is elected by the local voters.
Schools have plenty of problems, but this isn't one of them. Unless my parents and the dozens of other teacher friends of theirs I have met socially are part of some vast conspiracy...
I read that Ms. Goldberg tried to schmooze her way onto the X-Files, just like she did with ST. Fortunately Chris Carter had the balls to tell her to get lost, he wasn't interested in having her on the show.
I read somewhere that the original concept for TNG was a knock-off of the "Horatio Hornblower" series. Wesley was supposed to be one of the main characters, always saving the day with his unconventional ways, while the stuffy captain did things by the book.
For whatever reason, they abandoned this and chose another route. Thank goodness...
Black Ops would rule. Except I have no confidence in any of the current producers to do it right. I can hardly remember any well-executed military action scenes in the whole damn franchise. They were all pretty lame... guys in red spandex.
Black Ops done RIGHT would be an awesome thing. I want to see the series really start using the amazing destructive power of their small arms. They ought to be vaporizing people right and left, blowing chunks out of buildings, all that good stuff...
The holodeck was a pretty horrible thing, but occasionally they had a good show that involved it. The TNG episode with Prof. Moriarty was one.
There was a fairly lame Voyager episode where sone aliens were trying to kill everyone via the holodeck... it's only worth mentioning because Harry Kim developed a crush on one of the holodeck characters. Tom Perris said something like, "well, it happens to everyone," which I though was a pretty damn insightful for Trek. If the holodeck was as good as they say, it would suck people in worse than EverQuest, and it would be easy to develop unhealthy emotional relationships with the computer-generated characters.
Of course, this is what happened to the Talosians in TOS. They perfected the power of illusion and the whole society went down the crapper because they were too busy playing EQ.
This is not a troll, you nutbar moderators.
And I'll say it again, for the cheap seats -- proprietary software has a place. May the gods of metamoderation smite you all down.
That's a load of BS.
If you have any links, please post them for everyone's entertainment.

I smell the Automatic Complaint Letter Generator! If I didn't use it so much myself it might have fooled me.

Someone mod this guy up! Well said. Too bad the courts move so slowly.
(then again, the lethargy with which the American system does anything is also a protective measure... but damn, it can be frustrating.)

I was going to reply to my own post but you saved me the trouble. Well said.
And my post that touched off this thread got a FLAMEBAIT rating... my first ever! I'm so proud.
I would not doubt for a moment that your "real people" are the same sort of people that think anyone wearing a black t-shirt is a bad person...

The new captain will be a quadraplegic, in a wheelchair that he has to steer by blowing into a tube. A space tube, of course.
Film of people screwing? Never heard of such a thing in sex ed. Guess I had a lame school.
Um... I was being sarcastic. Obviously books and snail mail are still around. (and they will be forever I bet.)
