Even if you put this camera inside the back pocket of your jeans... then sit on it... that will be bad.
I'm not saying you will break the camera and lose those pictures. I'm saying break that camera on your back pocket and left those sharp plastic and glasses pieces inside your pocket... got to be hurt!
Sigmadesigns Product - they have couple DVD products that you may find interesting. NetStream 2000 has Linux drivers (BETA) available on their FTP site.
There is no question they are trying to build their "Napster Cult" over this sharing "copyrighted" music of others. By doing this properly, they need to "copyrighted" their Napster software and not to allow others to build similar programs. Isn't that what M$ was doing a few years back? But at least M$ was building their own stuff.
Monopoly?
Well, I guess this kind of activities would not work since they are using other people's properties to sell their logo, being what they called "corporation".
So, are they "ambivalent"?
ambivalent -- "adj. having both positive and negative feelings towards a subject"
BTW, want MP3 without installing a program, why don't try Giga Beat.
"like membership lists, student health records for when students go on class trips, transcripts - stuff like that. This is all being done semi-manually (spreadsheets and wordprocessing)."
I don't think anyone would actually make a student health records program which is open sources. Those features that you are looking for are so specific and not too many geek would write these programs. If you cannot find it in Freshmeat or google search, mostly you are not going to find it.
But if you cannot find these open source programs, why don't you just write the program in DBase or use MySQL or something? "student health records" program is probably like a giant text file, you can use Perl. Transcripts would be hard since they need some sort of graphics.
I own a Laptop which has a 14" TFT screen. Before I brought my laptop, I had done some research on those 13" HPA Laptops. But I didn't like them.
I don't recall IBM made HPA screen laptops, but I'm pretty sure Acer and Compaq do.
No matter HPA, TFT or others... lightings are always the problem. I chose the TFT screen because I did not need to switch the brightness to high level like the HPA needed. Even during the bright environment or under sunlight, I could still use the lowest possible brightness and contrast, and pictures and text still displayed clearly on screen.
At the same time, most TFT screens allow higher refresh rate than HPA screens. (Mostly depends on what video card it come with or their designs.) And I felt that most TFT show sharper colours than HPA or others.
I compared the Sony, IBM, Compaq and Acer in the warehouse and I could tell that IBM and Sony's TFT looks better. However, I was not able to test the Dell laptop. I really wanted to see their 15.4" TFT.
Here is an LCD Definition article from Sceptre.com and it said HPA is "...a Passive-Matrix Display technology the provides better response rates and contrast than conventional LCD displays. Although HPA displays aren't quite as crisp or fast as Active-Matrix (TFT) displays, they're considerably less expensive to produce. Consequently, HPA is being used by a number of computer manufacturers for their entry level or value notebook computers."
One way of testing laptop displays is to put the laptop on the office table, has a office table lamp right at the back of the screen. I am sure you will see the different between HPA and TFT.
Making it to be a Proxy Server for that public school would be nice. Especially hook it up with an ISDN or something. It should be enough for the public school Internet access.
Also, C, C++, Fortran, X,... works on this machine and may be useful for using it in a computer science class (as the server).
I am not sure if Matlab and Mathematica are still making IRIX version of their software. But if you can find a old version for this machine, that may be useful for Math and Physics class.
StarOffice from Sun is a more mature office suite than GnomeOffice. Features (i.e. import & export file documents) and support of StarOffice is a bit better than GnomeOffice, although they both have nice user interfaces. And I never experienced a crash / coredump with StarOffice.
However, GnomeOffice has a better edge in the future if you include GIMP in it. StarOffice doesn't come with a photo editing tools, something like Photoshop. And that's a good news for GnomeOffice. Especially, GIMP is a very good software to use.
If they really want to make those software (AbiWord, Gnumeric, GIMP,...) as a office suite, they should work on a central file type or file format that can let these "GnomeOffice" document types compatible and interactive with each other.
Unlikely that GnomeOffice will be use by most *NIX users. Not yet. But one may never know if once Gnome will take over the CDE world.
But the music industries think that they "did not" give the Napster users "free samples".
What they are thinking is that customers (Napster users) open the box and try the food. If it's good, they buy the whole box. If it's not good as expected, the food in the box is in the customers' pocket(s)... may give to somebody else.
But how come the music industries never think of their lose in sales are caused by their own music? If customers tried the food and think they are no good at all, isn't that depend on the food itself?
If one customer think the food is good, he/she will tell his/her friends... one to two, two to four, four to eight,.......
Not to mention that Spears had broke the all time sales record earlier this year, then some rapper broke the record later. Anyone of the music industry people mention that when they sue Napster?
So, they are saying for the new cell phones, companies need to release the data of radiation of each particular phone.
What about the old cell phones? What about pagers? What about those new Palm VII (which ever one buildin a phone)? What about those 900 MHz home use cordless phone?
Found this article from Canoe.ca about Japan conferees giving new 'dot-something' So, can we get something like '.geek' and '.nerd'? Or something like './."?
I have a ThinkPad I series laptop which currently installed with the Windows 98 and Linux on it. Most hardware works fine in Linux, except the modem. Most laptop came with Winmodem, so the only solution probably is for the Laptop linux users to buy a PCMCIA modem.
Also, earlier version of 2.2. kernel has problem with some of the laptop sound cards (i.e. ESS). Only the recent few versions (2.2.13+) has the fix that actually will work properly.
Especially, in the kernel 2.2.16 it has a fix of the IBM ThinkPad APM which is probably necessary for every IBM Linux Laptop users.
Now, the only thing that is not working for me.... probably is the DVD drive of my laptop. I guess the only DVD player for Linux is probably only the KDVD. (I may miss others here, sorry).
So, hopefully if they are shipping DVD drive with the new IBM Linux Laptop, they will ship with a stable version DVD player in Linux.
It's nice to see IBM actually shipping non-Windows Laptop. Hope in the future, they will also ship the BSD and BeOS. That will be great.
Also try GPS page from topology.org. It may help.
Good luck.
