  1. Re:As usual, the Japanese go overkill. on Is The PS2 Your Next DVD Player? · · Score: 1

I wouldn't call it overkill. It's a simple matter of getting the "coolest thing" to do the job. I've done that myself.

BTW, an M249 is not a heavy machinegun, but a squad automatic weapon, aka. a light machine gun. Doesn't use a 500 round belt either. But a 200 round belt or a 30 round magazine from an m-16 series of weapons.

  2. Tough one for Bungie on Microsoft Unhappy With Bungie's Use Of Linux · · Score: 1

This is of no surprise. But kinda silly. Microsoft should layoff on this issue. After all they are having difficulty with their Hotmail service as they try to ease WinNT/2K servers into spots which were used by BSD servers.

The WinNT servers are not even fully introduced and already it is apparent that they are not capable of handling the load. This same problem is going to occur again if Bungie is forced to give up their Linux servers. Then you'll have even more people peeved off about the Bungie/Microsoft union. I've been on Bungie.net and I have to say that their reliability of service is what keeps me coming back. Even with Diablo II around, I find that Bungie.net is loads better than Battle.net. If MS changes the way Bungie does things than the situation will be as bad as Battle.net.

Microsoft needs to gain the trust of the gaming consumer if they want their foray into the game market to be profitable. This can be a first step in either the right path, profitability and happy consumers, or the wrong path. Which leads to lose and Bill Gates castle being stormed and he ultimatly being guillotined. Now we wouldn't want that. 8^p

  3. What's in a Number on Has Linux Lapped Apple As Competition For Redmond? · · Score: 2

First of all people use Macs because it's easier. I've used GNOME and (shudder)KDE. GNOME is nice. Nice for a Linux GUI. It plain blows for the average Joe and Sally.

Linux will never be the desktop OS for everyone. The Linux community has always said that that was the inevitable result. But the only thing keeping that reality from happining is the Linux community itself. I've seen cases in geek meetings where a newbie would ask a question about Linux and get pounced on as a lamer. Hardly conducive to encourage someone to use Linux.

Now some of you will say "But those were just a few bad apples." I say that it is, unfortunatly, a majority of Linux folks.

As for the numbers that there will be more Linux users than Mac users, I ask "What kinda of users?". With Linux generally being free or at least fairly cheap. Most of those users are people who are just trying the OS out. They will dig around a bit and come to one of two conclusions. One, theres not Microsquish apps here. We'll go back. Or two, this is clumsy better go back to Winblows or MacOS.

These are the people that is currently and temporarily driving this number that is being ballyhooed by the Linux community.

I use Linux, MacOS, Solaris and unfortunaly Win 95/98/NT. With the exception of the last I like them all. I have never been a fan of blind OS zealotry and I don't need to hear more from the Linux camp.

  4. An Equal Exchange on Apple Announces Darwin 1.0 · · Score: 1

There are some people who are suspicious of Apple's motive for allowing the existance of Darwin. To that I say it serves in the best interest of Apple and rightly so. They can pick and choose portions of code that would enhance OSX. It is not without cost to Apple, however. They had to release key technologies to opensource, like QT streaming server. Some of you may say that this doesn't really cost Apple anything. Wrong, it costs them profit. After all you form a company to turn a profit. For those of you in the Open Source community who roll your incredulous eyes at Apple's audacity take a look at Redhat. I bet they're interested in turning a profit as well and they are a pillar of the community.

This is an equal exchange of ideas. And it will be good for Apple and the Open Source community. Not just for Linux or FreeBSD. But for the average Joe or Jane out there who are developing their own OS.

So all you zealots (OpenSource and Mac) pipe down and contribute. Ideas, code or support. Not whining.

I love my MacOS and Linux (LinuxPPC) and no one is going to tell me otherwise.

    End of rant

  5. Sounds like a Pittman on Exoskeletons for Human Performance Augmentation · · Score: 1

I can understand why DoD researchers are looking for new ideas. They have been working on Powered Armor since the mid eighties. A project called Pittman. I don't know the signifigance of the name but the designers bumped into a lot of problems.

The armor was seriously underpowered and as a result it was under armored and too lightly armed.

Powered armor infantry would have a decent go at Light Infantry. But Mechanized Infantry with their heavier weapons would eat a Pittman for lunch. Not to mention heavier armored vehicles.

So the design process has been going on for the last two decades. But now I believe we have what it takes to make a practical Powered armor.

It would still be expensive, but you won't use them like regular infantry. They will be used as a shock force where armored vehicles can not go or if said vehicles are not available.

They would make very poor special forces combat systems. Which was the original idea behind the Pittman suit.

Enough blabbing on my part 8)

  6. Where this is going on Biting The Bullet: Publishing And The Net · · Score: 2

Let me first say that King is a clever man. A marketing genius. Plus he writes an occasional cool story.

But this whole web publishing thing is a gimmik. And a poor one at that. There are several technology companies out there promoting e-books of one type or another. Hmmm, let get this straight. I spend between $200 to $600 on a enlarged PalmPilot ®. Then I pay about $4 to $7 for the privledge of downloading the etext. That's stupid.

Give me a REAL book any day. Go to a real bookstore. Actually pickup a book and look at it. It might be interesting.

The Net is vital for knowledge and entertainment. But lets not make other media become extinct for no good reason
