Not that I think this is a good idea but I've come to realize that many people use the SAME userid and password for different sites. That's how they remember how to get in.... I have come to this conclusion after observing the user habits of some of my clients.

So bottom line: MS Passport is redundent in terms of making it easier for the user. As for security... that's just a whole different ball game.

Result: a ton of cash and years of "developement" in the crapper.
In step the US Congress annoyed at this farce. They mandated the Army to come up with a replacement program. That gave birth to the M1 Abrams.

With a little luck this will happen again with this project. Hopefully the US will get a practical but deady new LAH series of helos as a result. An Abrams of the sky!

But that hasn't caused them any big problems.

I am seeing a very ugly kind of elitism here on Slashdot. For a while I've been seeing a cadre of Linux crusaders screaming that Linux will take over the world as the OS for the masses as soon as it's made to be more accessable. Fastforward to now. Linux is indeed alot more easier then even just a year ago. But it's easier for a tech geek or CompSci major. It is still cryptic for your average Joe and Sally.

Then we have those tech snobs look down on the collective masses for not knowing which daemons to run or which services to configure yourself. After all only a loser would run something straight out of a box as is. Hey snob, 90% of the users out there run their OS's like this. So OS X comes along. "Bloody hearesy!" cries some of those Linux Inquisitors. Don't use OS X then if you have a problem with it. There are almost 20 other flavors of Linux or FreeBSD to choose from.

The true geek/hacker will reserve judgement until they see OS X first hand. I for one am looking forward to it. I have LinuxPPC at home running along side Mac OS 9. I think anything that staves off the M$ evil from my home is worth lookin into.

You are not going to get that kind of info from the people designing the system. A fire control system of that complexity is the focal point for the whole weapons system. If you tell everyone how it's done it makes it easier to make a countermeasure for it.

Now for determining whether a target is a bird, a missle or a B-2 bomber is fairly easy to answer with common sense deductions. They will probably be using a combination of radar, ladar and FLIR (Forward Looking InfraRed) type system and have a database of know characteristics of many different threats. After all that's what the US Navy does to determine Naval threats. But assuming you're only using radar. Radar can tell you, roughly, the size of the approaching target. A bird will not be flying at more that 100 mph. And generally birds will not be flying above 15,000 ft. Air to air missiles and tactical/stratigic ballistic missiles are supersonic. That makes it fairly easy to determine what the target is. All in all this is a good idea. Costs are finally managable to the point where systems like this will be deployable in numbers.
