  1. Cheating at online "doors" of course on Introducing Children to Computers? · · Score: 1

When I was 14 (1990), my friends and I played Operation Overkill on a local BBS. There was a part in the game where you would fight other people and random numbers would be counted down separated by periods. It would tell you to hit the space bar at a certain number and the closer you got, the more accurate your fighting was. So, having had a computer in the house for years, I was already somewhat computer literate. A friend and I found the source code for a terminal program and simply added the code to hit the space bar automatically at the right time. The power of computers became obvious to me then and has always been with me.

I knew other people had probably done the same thing since several players had accuracy stats of %99.9.

  5. MS to blame? on Shutting Down Worm-Infected Broadband Users · · Score: 1

"...Microsoft will never fix the problem without making sure people have to pay a monthly subscription for their OS..."

Uhhh, MS had a patch out for this quite some time ago. It isn't directly MS's fault (although an argument can be made that they are somewhat to blame). An unpatched and poorly administrated Linux box is just as dangerous as an unpatched and poorly administrated Windows box.

I appreciate your further opinions on this matter, but if you believe that MySQL is an enterprise quality database, then you are uninformed. It is a good platform for some simple data storage and access, but it is a long way from being able to compete with MSSQL (even tho the price is nice).

I'm not referring to the 'Next' button. Again, it looks like you have never administered both Apache servers and IIS servers. It is true that Apache is VERY configurable after you've spent months getting the background and reading man pages and how-tos. However, %99 of the competent IS personel out there could sit down to an IIS server (having never done so before) and add web sites, ftp sites, etc. Does that make IIS better. No. Does that make Apache better. No.

By the way, is ASP+ (ASP.NET) available for Apache? I didn't think so.

Thank you for proving my point with your rant.

IS personnel who make decisions based on emotion and hatred of other solutions are not keeping their eye on the ball. I have been using Windows for over 2 years as a web server without a single problem. If you keep an eye on the available patches and properly configure your system you can avoid problems. I am also an avid Linux user and have been for over 3 years. I certainly believe that Linux is a great OS and is extremely usefull in a corporate environment. However, the ease of administration, ASP, simple database connectivity, and an inexpensive, quality database (that doesn't cost as much as Oracle or DB2 for Linux) are all reasons I chose to use Win2K and IIS5. Your circumstances and requirements may be different, but that doesn't mean that doesn't invalidate my decisions.

A poorly configured Linux box is just as dangerous as a poorly configured Windows box.

  8. what's the solution? on New (More) Annoying Microsoft Worm Hits Net · · Score: 1

Does anyone know what vulnerability this exploits? MS doesn't have a patch out yet. I have a win2k server running IIS (fully patched) and although I have been getting a large number of attacks, I haven't seen any side effects yet.

On a seperate note, 'bashing' windows and its users is a good way to show what a non-professional moron you are.

  11. Isnt MP3 piracy similar to Software piracy? on Metallica Remains Silent · · Score: 1

I dont want to get my a** flamed off, but I really cant blame Metallica (and others) for what they're doing. Major label artists (except Britney Spears) work hard and sacrifice to produce (some) good music. Now, their hard work is being undermined by piracy. Obviously a band like Metallica isnt going to starve to death over the loss of revenue, but what about the groups that are just starting out? What about the groups who wait tables at night to pay the bills so they can record music that is pirated the day after its release? Im not supporting the actions of the RIAA or Metallica, but I dont think we as tech-savvy individuals should blast them for protecting their own interests. If my copyrighted commercial software (the proceeds from which feed my family) was being openly pirated by a service like Napster, I would do everything in my power to stop it. Im not suggesting that we stop the use of MP3s. I love MP3s. Im simply suggesting that we think about the issue from both sides before making rash judgements and blatantly blasting anyone who wants to protect themselves.
