  1. The phone should come with a file manager, why should I have find my own app to do such a fundamental task?

  2. I didn't know you had to long-press on the icon to get a different option when opening a PDF attachment (I was just pressing on it which opens it within the sandboxed app), however, "Import with iBooks" (which is what it says on my phone) isn't going to be an option for other files I might want to save for access later. On an Android I can just save it to the file system somewhere and then browse to it later and do whatever I want with it.

  3. Oh, and another thing that really pisses me off about iOS is that I can't save a PDF file attached to an email so that I can just open the thing whenever I want; I have to go back to the email every time to open it because the thing is sandboxed to high heaven! :-(

  5. I hear you. I abandoned Linux when Ubuntu went to the dogs 5 years ago when Unity and GNOME 3 seemed to go the same way. Since then I've been pretty happy with my late 2013 15" MacBook Pro, though it hasn't all been beer and skittles. The laptop sits underneath my monitor stand all the time and acts as a cheaper Mac Pro, because Mac Pro prices were and are just ridiculous.

Xcode as an IDE is painful most of the time; it feels like a strait jacket, and the number of times Apple has changed Swift has lead me to no longer be bothered with it. Their 30% walled garden isn't all I thought it could be, either. The ability to search for and find apps in OS X is as lame as it ever was, and iTunes is just horrid and becomes more unusable with every release; just when you think it couldn't get worse Apple manages to find new ways to piss off its users.

Even iOS is starting to rub me the wrong way. No more headphone jack, the new way of killing apps is harder to use (you have to get the swipe just perfect or else you end up moving between apps), the keyboard changes were dumb (I'm talking about the colouring of the shift key, etc), no status lights (I've grown to like the flashing light to indicate incoming messages, etc, on my Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini which I use as a travelling phone which has a nice SD Card expansion slot inside).... it's the little things as well as the big things that Apple does that are beginning to turn me off. My next phone will probably be a Huawei as they're damn fast and are not locked down like Fort Knox.

I may continue to use a Mac as my desktop for some time, and might consider whatever mid-level/expandable machine they might allow us to purchase for a hefty fee, but they're on notice as far as I'm concerned, and the grass is beginning to look a lot greener on the other side.

Every iPhone since the 5S released back in 2013, you've been able to unlock just by pressing the home button once.

I have an iPhone 5C, which means I have to press it twice. There is no need to have to press it twice on my model, other than to irritate me in order to force me to buy a new iPhone. This is unnecessary for "legacy" iPhones and Apple should have retained the one-press behaviour for phones without a fingerprint reader

Settings > General > Accessibility > LED Flash for Alerts

No good if the phone is sitting on the desk, and the flash light is blinking where I can't see it. The Android light alert is far preferable because it's not a really-bright flash and is a very efficient tiny LED which can change colour.

I've never jail broken my iPhones but the phone is no longer doing it for me anymore. It's too restrictive and Apple's "we know best" mentality for everything is just driving me nuts. Their iCloud mail is SO SLOW to check for new messages, too. I think I'll ditch that and go to Gmail or something, too.

  12. Re:Most Android apps are garbage on App Store Sales For Android To Overtake Apple's iOS, Research Firm Says (sfgate.com) · · Score: 3, Interesting

I'm seriously considering switching to Android as my next phone, too. My iPhone is beginning to irritate me. I have to press the home button twice before I can enter my PIN, I have only one button (a back button and the other button to switch between apps or kill them would be nice), and there is no light like I see on Android phones indicating that a message arrived and needs answering, etc. These are all things that Apple just doesn't have, and their sandbox is just becoming more of a hindrance.

Like you say, if you're a moron who installs every spammy app you find, then tough luck for you, but I would have a much better experience with Android than I do with my locked-down sandboxed walled garden that is lacking some useful features because Apple knows best. Sorry, but they don't know best, and I'm getting sick of it. I'll still use my MacBook Pro as my desktop OS at home, but as far as a phone goes, iPhone isn't cutting it anymore, and Huawei are making some damned fast phones that look very attractive indeed (and are way cheaper).

Some idiot at Microsoft has decided to change the decades-old icon to run a query in the view designer in SQL Server Management Studio. I could only have delivered half of what I've done over the past 5+ years if I had to use something other than Ext JS. I chose it mainly for the superior grid and its excellent data package, which are still at the top of their game today. I don't know why something like setting focus eluded you so much, so perhaps something else was going on and getting in the way (I've painted myself into a corner countless times and wanted to blame the framework, but in most cases, it turned out to be my own fault). And as for workarounds, occasionally you might need to put one in place to solve a bug ahead of the next release, but that's not often (no framework is immune to the odd bug).

The great thing about Ext JS is that it gives me pretty much everything I'll ever need. Now I doubt I'll impress the "hype" crowd with that statement but I don't have to manage all those project dependencies and includes and various build systems. But at the end of the day, I don't care too much about the inner-workings of Ext JS because my finished products are so darn and good looking functional, and this continues to be one of its strongest selling points (albeit with a much heftier price tag these days, but it's still worth paying, IMHO).
