  4. OEM != 1st tier on OEM's and CMOS Settings? · · Score: 1

    A 1st Tier manufacturer (e.g. HP, Compaq et al or anybody who uses proprietary mbd's) will also have a proprietary BIOS (with their name/logo if nothing else). When the BIOS is tweaked for their custom board the default settings are chosen at design time.
    Any other manufacturer just uses the BIOS which ships with the board which is itself, you guessed it, setup at design time.
    So it's a moot point. BIOS/CMOS settings are different for every model of board. There's nothing for OEM's to worry about on the production line...
    Worst case is somebody screws up at the BIOS manufacturer and sets something wrong in which case the guys who write the install scripts have to do a little research and throw a few extra lines of code in to update the BIOS.

  5. Re:What about damage to the TOP side? on High Volume CD/DVD Cleaning Options? · · Score: 1

    It is the top side, (which the laser never passes through), that is missing in the cheap CDR's...
    The good CDR's do have a top layer of plastic under the decal forming a plastic "sandwich" around the media.
    The only way to tell is to look at the edge of the CDR. The good ones have a seam where the plastic layers are fused together. The cheap ones have no seam and it's obvious that they are slightly thinner when compared to a good one.

  7. Re:What about damage to the TOP side? on High Volume CD/DVD Cleaning Options? · · Score: 1

    That's only a problem with cheap CDR's. The better CDR's have the same thickness of plastic on both sides. (That's how the cheap ones get so cheap, they skip the second half of the plastic sandwich and just slap a decal right on top of the media.)
    If you buy locally, and look really closely, you can usually see well enough into the package to avoid the crappy ones.
    Mail-order you takes your chances!

    Ah, yes, but if you actually have to import or export data manually to integrate with other systems that don't have connectors (probably because MS would rather not have you talking to them) then guess what Microsoft suggests? Scripting!

    And you know what those scripts need? Correct syntax!

    And how is the syntax determined? By the underlying structure!

    So yes, computers are just tools to get a job done, but when standards are munged so as to make using those tools as difficult as possible, then hey, guess what? You get non-knee-jerk anti-Microsoft comments.

    Interestingly enough I was a MS contractor for awhile and I was suprised just how much of the crappiness that comes out of Redmond is NOT willfull evil but simple incompetence coupled with poor management and overzealous sales people.
    But that doesn't let 'em off the hook! :)
