  1. Re:Dammit on WorldCom Fraud Doubles · · Score: 1

I remember waking up one morning some weeks ago and bashing myself over the head for actively seeking out some other telecom than our old state owned.
Worldcom - can't be wrong going with the largest. (Or thereabouts).

Wonder if they actually were the largest. I'd hate see Woldcom go away though. They've given us excellent service for the last few years ...

Including bending over backwards when trying to mend the incredible f... up when we had an internal telephone system *not* connected to the olde state owned backbone for *two* weeks.

But, with "irregularities" popping up with this rate, I'm afraid we may need to get out. /Mef.

Well, actually a correct terminology would be that both are using an indian setup. To me the Kings Indian black plays d7d6. Should black play d7-d5 in the aforementioned position it would be Grünfeld(-ish).

At least one ISP (Bahnhof) in Sweden has put in a bid for some of the european network infrastructure according to Computer Sweden. So perhaps parts of it wont go down just yet.

I've been working in Tanzania and seen email taking off. Everyone has an email account, as well as their aunts. Even local fishermen on the coast north of DSM have email.

    It's strange.
People going off over the merits of .doc and .pdf formats. Agreed it seems a bit short sited publishing an rfc on open source implementation in proprietary formats - they probably just didn't think far enough though. And, it _still is_ their standard of publication.

Nevertheless, a simple link to a text or html page probably would have stopped the debate in the first place.

I think that "as well as" is the phrase people are looking for here.

  8. Could there be a connection? on AltaVista Can't Keep Up · · Score: 1

Hmm, what I'm seeing is a company trying to out-smart itself. People want a search engine - not another market place. People want somewhere to get results to their queries not sponsered - more or less irrelevant - links to Altavista partners.

    Enter Google.
    Exit Altavista users.
End Altavista drive to improve engine/site?

What about all those unfortunate people living under some kind of protection (police or voluntary). At least where I live you can have a unregistered phonenumber. Would this lead to a total information lock out? Hope not.

  10. Geek profiling - building a new eastern europe on Geek Profiling: The Next W.A.V.E. · · Score: 1

This sound absolutely wonderfully Eastern Europeian culture "pre-fall-of-communism". It sounds so totally anti-liberal that the US would be the last country in which such a scheme could be dreamt up. Or perhaps not. The moral panic now sweeping across the western world would be likely to produce such monstrous ideas eventually. And, as most of us europeans are convinced "moral panic" started over at your place. So, who next to be registered? Anti weapon lobby children by pro-weapon lobby children? Or the other way round? Great stuff, keep it going! Witness repressive society form! M.
