Even tho I don't have an A3d card, I may consider getting one when I upgrade (probably fairly soon, even tho my computer is pretty new:). I use ALSA because my sound card (Trident 4Dwave DX) isn't supported by OSS-Free. But I don't care about OSS any more - I say screw 'em. I'm not going to PAY for drivers when I can get better ones for free. ALSA supports multiple audio streams SEAMLESSLY - and AFAIK OSS does not.
So who cares about OSS any more? Alsa is just plain BETTER. And it's free (speech) as well.
It's cross-platform, and it's what LokiSoft uses to port all their games - after all Sam Latinga (a programmer for LokiSoft) wrote a good chunk of it:).
I believe it's under the LGPL, but I could be mistaken. Look on Freshmeat, the LokiSoft site, or your fav search engine to find it;).
Well, I've been using Utah GLX (glx.on.openprojects.net, but it's probably something different now:), and I could run the Q3A demo so-so on my TNT2 M64. I only got about 15FPS... I'd try these ones out if I had my TNT2, but it's currently being replaced since it was defective...
Well, I sort of admin a Beowulf at work... it consists of 8 dual PII-450s with 512MB RAM apiece...
It came pre-made, with a slightly-modified version of RH 5.2 installed - basically just an SMP kernel and some utilities and libraries. You don't really need any special software, except for PVM or MPI (we use MPI). The MPI distribution we use is LAM 6.2 - I'm sure you can hunt it down if you look around a bit (try google.com/linux).
I'm going to eventually set up another small cluster for testing and development purposes, once we get the first piece of software into operation (or maybe before, if I don't have a whole lot of stuff to do) - I'm planning on setting it up with Debian and a much more sensible layout (share/usr, instead of each machine with its own/usr - or maybe not, depending on what seems to be the best way to do it).
I wouldn't recommend RedHat, tho - adminning on it is not much fun. (no apt!)

That readme is OLD! Look at the version number it lists stuff for!
I don't have my TNT2 installed yet (just got it yesterday, waiting for the rest of the computer to arrive:), so I can't confirm this - but there are some files having to do with OpenGL in the System/ directory of the demo...
I've been looking for one of these at a reasonable price for a while - any idea if there's one coming out for under $150? There have been a bunch of/. stories out them, but they're all ridiculously priced.
I've got a CD burner, and would really like to be able to carry all my music with me on only a few CDs - after all, once you get to have more than 30 or so, it's difficult to find carrying cases with enough capacity.....
Will the new boot floppies have sound card drivers on them? It's a bit annoying to have to recompile the kernel just so that you can get sound support.
I really like Debian - and hope that the stable version gets out soon so that friends of mine without fast net connections can install it. Slink is just getting to be too old to be useful.

I agree about Linux users not mainly using Linux for servers... while I'm a highschool student, the Linux boxes I use (or admin, or have set up for my sister at college) are:
1 webserver, running 2.0.0 (obviously, I don't admin this, and I'm frankly appalled:) 1 Beowulf (hehe - I also have a part-time job at Kent State University, where I'm taking Calculus) 1 development machine/calculation server (where I do my Beowulf coding) My desktop machine (a K6-200) and finally, the 586 my sister uses for email and such.
So, is this all servers? I think not!
Maybe somebody could help me with this...

I've been trying to get Mutt to do what I want for a while. My problem is this: I'm on a bunch of mailing lists, and most of them work just fine when I save messages to a folder - but some don't. I believe it has something to do with the sender ID or the reply-to - but at any rate, on these, it always wants me to save them to a folder for the sender, and not the mailing list. This wouldn't be bad, except this is about 3/4s of my mail!
I've tried mbox-hooks, save-hooks, and other things - but part of the problem is that the docs are very unclear as to what things mean. Nothing seems to work - can someone help me?
You know, that's EXACTLY what I was thinking - and I actually have a good reason (and know what a beowulf IS!). I'm working on some Beowulf stuff right now... I only get paid about $6.00/hour,but I get to read/. and mess around with Linux:).
If you kill one process of a running beowulf computation - it gets really messy.
In fact, last I heard, the chances are 50-50 that there will be a Linux client version on one of the UT CDs - and if not, it will been released very soon after.
There's already a server port which you can download.
Just waiting until a Linux client version is available for the demo - of course, with my puny K6-200 / Voodoo 1, it probably won't run very well:).
I agree heartily. I really don't know why they keep him around; maybe it's latent masochism. At first I didn't understand why people bashed Katz so much, but now I understand. I cring every time I read one of his articles or book reviews; they simply are so content-free, and the writing style is atrocious - after a few paragraphs, I want to scream. An example of his poor writing style is the first two paragraphs. It took me several tries to figure out what he meant by "Guess what? They aren't." Turns out he was referring to something at the beginning of the previous paragraph. This is something which simple proofreading could catch - but it's obvious he doesn't do that, or it would have been caught.
PLEASE find someone better that Katz - Roblimo's interviews are infinitely more interesting, because we can actually find out something we care about.
They may have a good reason for this (and I'm not saying this is true, this is just a guess), but they may be using Macs for webservers simply because hardly anybody uses them for that purpose. If there are fewer people who know how Mac webservers work and what the weaknesses are, then they're less likely to be cracked and vandalized.
Of course, if they were really smart, they would probably use something like Apache on Linux or FreeBSD, but I suppose Macs are better than Windows at least:).
I believe it has to do with "reflow" problems. Basically, when it redraws a button, it also has to redraw everything else on the screen. It's much better than it once was, but still needs work.
A lot of the posters here are missing the point. There are *optional* features. Because of the fact that you have the source code for Mozilla, you can disable these features with little difficulty - or add new ones, if you so desire.
This is what Open Source / Free(d) Software is all about. It's about choice. Nobody is forcing you to use these addons, but you have the option to use them.
A few months ago (maybe even a few weeks ago) many people were saying Mozilla is a failure. Try out the latest builds - it's getting better and faster all the time. I would use it as my main browser except for the fact that it uses more memory than I'd like (I only have 32MB because my motherboard has a bad SIMM slot). It looks better than netscape and very soon will be faster.
It think it's great that people are able to add things to Mozilla if they choose - don't you agree?
