    It seems to me this tool opens up some "opportunities", if you will, to exploit windows machine user content. I'm not implying that the google desktop has security holes, windows has enough of them. But now, harddrive contents can be more easily searched using the google desktop interface.

    It runs as webservice on port 4664. It only responds to internal requests (localhost) but that doesnt mean a virus couldnt embed requests encoded that way to learn about the files stored on the system.

    BTW, the google desktop shows how poor IE is about clearing its cache. I have IE set up (on my xp test box no SPs) to clear the cache every day. Yet, when I query google desktop I get "hits" about websites I visited days ago.

    one of the things I noticed in the media reporting is what they call "rich". The numbers are really low. Sometimes its those earning 100K or more. But most of the time, its 75K or more. I've seen (and unfornately lost my link) an article that stated income on weekly basis that amounted to no more than 50K. Some of this comes from how the census records "rich". I dont agree with it---hence the scare quotes around "rich".

    One thing to keep in mind, income doesnt really denote wealth or riches. There are many "rich" dont have a 50K in income as income in defined according to census data. According to the how the numbers are collected, someone earning $0 working but is earning interest on $1 million will not be classified as rich. Likewise, if they dont own a home but rent, they may actually end up in the "poor" category.

    BTW, I did include for inflation--hence the (in 2003 dollars) notation. That means adjust for inflation. Idiot.

    The truth is that poor and middle class households alike became better off, which increased the ranks of the "rich" (those making over $49,999 in 2003 dollars in the (as some media records it)) as a share of the population. In 1967, those with such an income constituted 24.9 percent of households. By 2003 this had increased to 44.1 percent. The inescapable conclusion is that the declining ranks of the middle class result from one thing only-more of them are now "rich."

    I've been believing for a while that the current user id/password system is anquidated and insecure. I think user creditials need to be "query" based--meaning:

    When you set up your account, you get an user id (of course). But then you set up a dozen or so of question/answer pairs, of which several will be asked of you when you sign in.

    For example
    userid = objwiz
    question = what is my moms name?
    answer = I dunno I was adopted
    question = what is my favorite color?
    answer = red no blue
    question = what is my favorite food
    answer = ask my gf

    The point is that the question/answer pairs are information that is a) unique to the person creating them; b) dont require that be written down because the question in the way its worded should be your clue; c) is not very crackable via dictionary or alogrythim attack; etc....

    Storage requirements for such a system isnt issue today. Even our phones have plenty of memory for something like that.

    It seems to me the biggest reason we dont have anything like this is the momentum required to change an existing system.

    1) Gear is expensive.

    3) Depending on the script, locations, etc...the gear you've purchases may not suit the shoot. Maybe you will want a different look that a different camera, lens or format will provide etc...

    You can always rent the equipment from a rental house. Their all over the place and they will ship the gear to you too.

    A great resource (free too) for understanding more about producing a film is the Film and Video magazine. They run articles about peoples experiences making all types of "movies" including shorts.

    Since the compiler will be part of the OS, I could write an application that could generate code and run it, leveraging existing classes already on the system.
