I would not strongly disagree that "Trust is the foundation of every human relationship." (partly because I have no other candidates to replace Trust). But, it seems I can't trust Verisign not to try to pull the wool over my eyes. I suppose I am going to have to remove the Verisign Root CA certs from my browsers now.
Instead of "means that we should make about $26mil in the coming year", perhaps the boss said "Our expected revenues next year are $26M", in which case, he would have been correct, but only if, the probabilities were accurate (which they almost never are). This is not a lie. The lie would have been "we have contracts A, B, and C coming down the pipe, we expect our revenue to be $130M". Most companies will lie like this.
When I used to manage a mail server, I was asked to filer based on orbs. Not did this in no significant way limit the amount of spam entering the system, it became a huge administrative headache. Eventually, we stopped using the lists. I am sure there are likely better lists, but I simply prefer creating my own list, based on investigation into what's coming in.
When I think of the combination of technology and art, I think of the Canadian wood block printer Walter J. Phillips. He worked in a medium that requried study and experimentation to master the available tools (inks, and wood). Only his mastery of the technical side allowed him to express his artistic vision. This used to be called "craftsmanship". I don't see the same level of craftsmanship in other combinations of technology/art suggested by some. People experimenting with robotics (for example) seem to always push the technology component to the limits, instead of getting to a point of understanding every aspect of a subset of robotics, and using that to create some vision.
I don't find myself too often creating an "archive" of shows, but instead using these devices to time shift. When I used to use my VHS, I would always skip ads anyway.
I am more than happy purchasing copies of shows I really want to keep a copy of (HBO, PLEASE release season 3 of the Sopranos soon). It seems none of these shows are from the broadcast networks anyway. I suppose when these kinds of devices are outlawed, only outlaws will take their linux boxes, add a good video card, and use Open Source software to do this....
The patent contains this definition:
"plural remote terminal means, each including (a) modem means for effecting input/output digital data communication with said central computer means via the telephone lines of a telephone network"
I access web servers via cable, not telephone lines. I expect most servers out there are not connected over "telephone lines" per se (telephone lines used to connect telephones). I wonder if this will be argued.
Tom: "Can you give me Google in a box?"
Mary: "Yes, we can."
Tom: "Well, let him out!"

I am glad to hear your story. When my home town (Toronto) was bidding for the 2008 games (and also when they were bidding for the 2000 games back in the late eighties/early ninties) I tried to express to most folks about my concerns with what the games seem to becoming, plus the associated costs (taxes, inconvienence, legacy of unneeded sports facilities located downtown, etc). Most people did not seem to belive me or care, they were simply caught up on Olympic fever. I was very glad (but also aware not to publically show it) when Toronto lost the bid to Beijing.
Your story helps eliminate any regrets and/or moments of self doubt regarding my feelings. I understand the Toronto Bid Commitee is thinking about charging up the machine for 2012. Yipes!
Every time the People's Jewellery Ad comes up on the TV with the heart-shaped diamond pendant, she turns to me and says, "Don't get that for me. No REALLY".
Every year, I look for something that:
a) Is something she wants,
b) Is something that will signify my love for her, and
c) Is something I deem has any value.
Every year, I don't find it, and get her flowers. This always seems okay in the end.
