  1. Re:Sounds like an interesting read... on Hacker's Delight · · Score: 2, Informative
Much of the basic material in this book was formerly published in 1996 under the more mundane title of:
    The PowerPC Compiler Writer's Guide
    ISBN 0-9649654-0-2
edited by Steve Hoxey, Faraydon Karim, Bill Hay and Hank Warren.

That book obviously had no qualms about targeting a narrow audience and it served its purpose well.

When Sun was awarded patent #6,073,150 it had a familiar ring. Sure enough: figure 3-25 on page 50 of "PowerPC Compiler Writer's Guide". Only the patent was awarded in 2000 and the Guide was published in 1996. That was about where I lost respect for the patent process.

The point is moot, the bar has been lowered so far on M$ ethics that this would not even be newsworthy had they done it. Nor would I be surprised if M$ own spooks were the ones to uncover Oracle's investigation. Which, as I said, is fair enough.

A good example of why companies go to so much trouble to register and protect trademarks. Still, I doubt X11 carries much name recognition in the mass market, it's merely a nuisance to UNIX users (ranking with their desecration of the word "innovate").

  6. Re:What clown college did these MS lawyers come fr on Microsoft's Watered-down Version Of DOJ Remedy · · Score: 1

In court, Microsoft takes an aggressive, stance, not budging an inch, even trying at every turn to gain ground in an exasperating defiance of judgment against them. And in the business world they have not mellowed their activities, even stepped them up, showing apparent mad recklessness in continuing a strategy that has landed them in court already. At first I found this all outrageous, but it makes perfect sense. They are simply trying to grab maximum territory before the borders are drawn. I don't think their executives and laywers are deceived into thinking they have full control of the situation. They are planning and acting like mad behind the scenes for the next step in the game. Their behavior in court is buys time, useful for many reasons, among them running rampant in the remaining good months to offset any eventual rollback.

Staying quiet only makes them look guilty. Remaining silent and evasive didn't help Gates' credibility in his deposition during the trial. Might as well come out swinging.

And if they are going down in this battle, maximum noise is useful as a smokescreen to keep attention off whatever else they have in the works. How much revenue increase are they looking at from legalized extortion via the UCITA provisions, for example?
