  1. Re:Tech jobs and social life on Do You Consider Your Social Life When You Choose A Career? · · Score: 1
"What I want to know is this: why would someone going into a tech job even consider what kind of social life that they would lead? I mean, I know that this would matter to most people, but tech people are a special case."

Well you are maybe - but I'm not. Both my wife & I have very busy social lives - I'm a sysadmin, she's a qa geek.

"For example, how many programmers do you know that actually get out much? I bet RMS doesn't do much outside of GNU, just look at his website."

RMS is a special case - he is in no way representative of geeks in general.

"Although I must concede that the stricter alcohol laws in Utah might have an adverse affect, seeing as many jobs such as tech support are depressing and stressful enough to cause drinking and other drug problems."

I think it is the general tenor of Utah - with it's outrageous (to me) "our religion is the only way to think" intolerant attitude that is so prevalent in the culture there.

So why the fuck are you bothering to read it?

To paraphrase you, "Slashdot sucks 'cause they aren't really journalists, and they hate and repress anything that isn't about Linux and Open Source, but I can't resist adding my commentary."

Honestly, why do you bother with it? Why do even care what moderation your posts recieve? it's not as if you're reputation is at stake here. I imagine you could find many other constructive things to do with your time than read articles on a site you despise.

How is linking "...helping people obtain illegal material..."?

As has been pointed out many times here so far, a link is just a link.
    It's information.
No one makes you click on it.
No one makes you download any files.

"Further, hyperlinking does not itself involve a violation of the Copyright Act (whatever it may do for other claims) since no copying is involved. "
If this is true, then where's the basis for another lawsuit? Is the RIAA planning to take this up to the Supreme Court?

"I am concerned, however, about 3 personal domains I've had for some time that are still over at NSI. I'd like to move them, but I don't want them to disappear into a black hole, and NSI just seems to be getting more aggresive about losing existing domains to other registrars."

You can pay Dotster ($25.00 - this includes one year of registration [$15] & a fee [$10]) to move them for you. You don't lose any time remaining that you've paid NSI for; it's easy, painless, and takes less than 2 weeks.

    ...and has the same solution.

Refuse to use their products & services. I recently registered a second domain with a different registrar. They're cheaper, have a much easier to use administration setup, and you can actually talk to them on phone if you have a question. They even made transferrring my current domain from NSI easy & painless.

NSI has never had to think about customer service before, and they are apparently completely incapable of even understanding the concept - as a result, the new registrars that do understand it are going to (hopefully) bury them.

Quite possibly it's because Tom Cruise has (so far) done his best to keep his religion off the screen. Travolta, until this one, has also. And let's face it - had the movie been any damn good, most of the commentary about it would probably ignore the whole $cientology issue.

Or, you could stop reading altogether...

No - wait; how about this: download the /. code, register a domain (say, whinygeek.net) and start your own Katz-less public newsforum.

Personally, I resent all the whining about topic/offtopic posts here, as well as the rather nasty and uncalled-for attacks on the people running it. The code is free & domains are cheap - if you don't like what's here, go start your own damn site & stop WHINING about this one.
