  10. The XKCD image shows the time that I care about: The time humans populate the planet. Ya know, in the Hadean period the earth was mostly still made of molten lava, and certainly hotter than today, with LOTS more CO2 and practically no O2 in the atmosphere. But guess what: No humans tried to survive on that planet.

Aside of that, I don't care. I'm on my way out and I don't have kids. If you do, well, I'd prepare some sort of good excuse if I was you. You'll need it.

  11. Intentional? Nah. Oil companies are not run by mustache-twirling evil overlords hellbent on destroying earth. They're just run by people who care about profit. If it was profitable to protect the environment, they'd do that, unfortunately it's profitable to turn the planet into an uninhabitable hellhole. That's basically all there is to it.

And yes, I'm beyond caring. I tried to care. I really did. But I simply don't anymore. I have no kids. And the planet will stay habitable for the maybe 20 years I have left. Why should I care about this ball being habitable for you or your kids if even you can't be assed to?

  13. On what? Considering our superior success with the "War on drugs", the "War on poverty" and the "War on terror", we should probably declare a "War on climate change".

Then that "prospector" needs to have fuel for the return trip, or you make it a single trip ship that you consider a loss, either way, you need insane amounts of fuel. Again: You plan to put a vessel on a hyperbolic trajectory AND THEN back to a lunar orbit. And all that has to be achieved with a rocket that has quite a bit of ISP which usually entails a very poor fuel efficiency.

Concerning the fuel: What is that magical fuel? Let me put it clearly and unambiguous: What magical fuel is that? Tell me!

Launching in bits and pieces does reduce the amount of material you have to lift per launch, but it entails the problem of having to reconnect them. In orbit. Which makes whatever you put there heavier and less stable. That's fine for an orbital station that is supposed to be mostly stationary, with very little stress due to acceleration. It's certainly not an option for rockets that have to be accelerated with quite a bit of impulse simply because making modular setups stress resistant makes them heavy. And heavy is not an option for something you want to accelerate twice for orbital changes from lunar orbit to hyperbolic.

  21. Back when I was young, MS was what rescued us from the clutches of IBM and their mainframes. MS was the alternative, the one that gave us the option to tell IBM to go suck a donkey dick when they came with their "you can't avoid us, eat our shit and call it ice cream" attitude.

Today's MS is not what our father's MS was. Today's MS is what our father's IBM was.

What's happening? Jack shit is happening. A bunch of people finally woke up and noticed that we're fucked. But hey, since we're fucked, why bother trying to do anything? It's just so simple, no matter where you are in the realization chain, you can simply continue as usual with no reason to change your behaviour.

At first it's "there is no climate change" so there is no reason to do anything.
Then, when it's no longer possible to deny it, it's "well, climate has always changed", and since that's still nothing that I could possibly be blamed for, no reason to change anything.
Then we get to "well, we do affect it, but it's not gonna have any impact" which again gives you no reason to change anything,
only to finally arrive at "well, we did fuck up, but now it's too late anyway", which again is no reason to do anything since you can't do anything anyway anymore.

Ain't it great? No matter where we are in the climate change timeline, we have no reason to stop fucking the planet.
